View Full Version : Wave the 7700 goodbye
GhostDog 18-06-2004, 03:48 PM The Nokia 7700 (http://www.nokia.com/nokia/0,6771,47550,00.html) - a pioneer for its time, the first of its kind, the live child of a N-Gage and a P900 as some call it will not see the light of day. It was to be powered by Symbian OS and Series 90 UI and should've paved the road for a new class of "Mediacentric" Nokia devices. With its landscape oriented 640x320 touch-sensitive screen and EDGE support it should have made high quality streaming video and the concept of Visual Radio a reality, instead it will be a pilot/demo tool to network operators and media/content providers. The end of the 7700 is not the end for Series 90. Nokia are planning to launch a Series 90 based device sometime in 2005. so it means that we can never use nokia7700 in our own hands
and they may launch a new set in 2005 of 90 series
but nokia haven't tell clearly that why it has taken this step
langdona 19-06-2004, 06:48 PM I was never sure what the target market for the 7700 was? It was an interesting concept but with its shape, size and side talking I dont think it would have been very popular with the generaL public. I think its a wise move by Nokia to cancel it and it will be interesting to see what series 90 device they are planning for next year.
GhostDog 19-06-2004, 06:52 PM They seem quite clear to me: Commenting on the 7700's change of career, Kari Tuutti, Director of Communications for Nokia's Multimedia division, readily admitted the Nokia 7700 had not reached a stage where Nokia felt comfortable launching the product. "Industry elements, in terms of content and service availability, are not yet mature enough."
Vicky 19-06-2004, 07:50 PM but nokia .com
says something else
it is being clear that it is not avaible for genral public
then to whom it would be avaible.
J2theIZZO 19-06-2004, 11:22 PM AAARRRGGH!, this phone was aimed at me!!...Can't beleive they aren't releasing it!
:frown:

Reading sometimes helps: it will be a pilot/demo tool to network operators and media/content providers. and developers.
J2theIZZO 20-06-2004, 10:20 AM and developers.#
So it's possible there will be a development package for sale for a really stupid price?...all is not lost then I guess

I thought of that too,but will the future released application be compatible with it,has the software reached production level?!

If it was released as a developer package then surely they would finish the phone first, so I would have thought software would be compatible, especially as it's designed for development on S90
GhostDog 20-06-2004, 01:48 PM Good point.
martinharnevie 21-06-2004, 10:16 AM The Series 90 is the modern day successor of the original Eikon user interface as seen in the Psions. Hence, it's major appeal would be with mobile professionals. This is supported by Series 90 maintaining the original Psion office applications such as Symbian Word and Symbian Sheet, and having full browser and communicator features.
I fear Nokia, having quite limited experience from the enterprise market, have underestimated the attraction that Series 90 would have. Instead it was designed and positioned as a mediastation only. Regardless of whether or not there will be a market in the future for such media stations, the mobile professional market exists today, and is growing rapidly.

I agree that the "media station" as you call it type of device or the technology in the 7700 is in it's infantcy with such concepts as visual radio and other forms of media that the 7700 was supposed to support I think they tried to release it too early not realising this.
A lot of people I have spoken to didn't like the 7700 at all, I guess I am one of the few that did like the design and potential of such a phone...i'm sure we will see something simlar by Nokia in the years ahead, and perhaps on a 3G network, after all with a phone aimed so much at multimedia and data it make sense that it should really be on the 3G network with so few providers supporting EDGE technology (That I know of anyway).
So it looks like we'll see a new Series 80 device (9500) before we get a new S90.
Read in The Register (http://www.theregister.com) today that the Sendo X has started shipping :icon14:

My findings vs personal view too! However, one has to separate the 7700 from the Series 90. Many people didn't like the 7700 as a model, but when they saw the Series 90 screenshots in isolation, they got terribly excited "why doesn't Nokia use this instead for the Communicators?". And I am not only talking about Psion abandonees here.
Delta737 22-06-2004, 07:23 AM I agree. Series 90 has a lot of potential, however I would not have considered buying the 7700. If Series 90 would have been in the 9500 I would probably buy it!
And even the Psion series 5 showed a succesfull combination of touch-screen and full qwerty-keyboard. Why can't Nokia (or SE for that matter....)
langdona 22-06-2004, 09:40 AM "why doesn't Nokia use this instead for the Communicators?".
I'd like to know this to. Series 90 seems a natural choice for communicators to me.
leeee 26-06-2004, 03:00 AM well.i like 7700,it is sad to hear that. 555555555555555555555
