View Full Version : Browsing HTML on WAP connection

I signed up for WAP (over GPRS) service, and tried a bit of browsing. Seems like I can get most HTML sites through the WAP gateway, although they often show mangled and are quite slow to render. Unfortunately, it seems that web browsers (Opera, NetFront) can't make do with a WAP connection.

So a few questions:

I'm assuming that the WAP gateway translates web pages to XHTML so that the built in browser can see them. Is that correct?

Is there a faster XHTML browser, that could handle large pages well?

Is the inability of web browsers to work with a WAP connection inherent? That is, is there a chance that Opera might add browsing support through WAP if there's enough interest? Or is there a technical problem with that? Or does the gateway mangle the pages, and not the built in browser, in which case a better browser won't be able to solve the problem?

ReqWireless WebViewer is a Java (J2ME) web browser that works over WAP (through the ReqWireless proxy/gateway):
