JyriK 11-03-2003, 04:02 PM And ugly as hell. even the 3650 looks way better.
That rotating camera is nice...
simeonbubblegum 11-03-2003, 04:07 PM • Service lamp
What is Service lamp?
TANKERx 11-03-2003, 05:01 PM I guess it's like the flashing LED on Ericsson phones that shows it has a signal. Some people like it, other loathe it.
I don't think this one looks half bad. It's a similar form factor to its future Palm and Microshcmuk devices.
Maybe it's putting them all head-to-head to see which horse to ride in the future.
I had to laugh at Pocket PC Thoughts when one of its editors, Ed Hansberry, reported a 'News Item' which stated that Samsung was abandoning Palm. The story was based on someone called 'Brian' who had been e-mailing someone called 'Mac' who had a 'friend' who worked for Samsung and so it must be true (at least we look for a little more authentication on AAS than a few e-mails from people who's surnames we don't even know).
Anyway, back to the plot - I hope this Symbian smartphone does well since it is Symbian's first Clamshell smartphone and it does have a few nice little touches.
I like it! A little flip phone with the OS we all love :D
Can't go wrong!
MaleBuffy 12-03-2003, 02:27 AM Bluetooth?
But the Fujitsu FOMA 3G phone is clamshell so its techincally not the first symbian clamshell.
Its the first Series 60 clamshell tho!
thejpzr 12-03-2003, 09:16 PM Samsung has just released its first Series 60 phone, the SGH-D700. It will be available in the second half of 2003.
I was today playing with this phone, and I was really impressed that:
- this phone is sooo cool
- that Symbian dumped MS Smarpthone
here are some MY photos of this phone:

MaleBuffy 12-03-2003, 10:05 PM I am in love :D
Thanks for the photos jpzr - looks like a really nice phone.
Ok, its not going to be to everyone's tatse, but as someone said its the first clam shell series 60, and well it s a different style. I'm sure it will do well.
Rafe
MaleBuffy 12-03-2003, 10:15 PM I have to say that I am very impressed by this handset. It features a CCD lens chip, not the cheap CMOS that is used in camera phones nowadays. I think this is a winner.
thejpzr 12-03-2003, 10:22 PM Thanks for the photos jpzr - looks like a really nice phone.
Ok, its not going to be to everyone's tatse, but as someone said its the first clam shell series 60, and well it s a different style. I'm sure it will do well.
By the way please note that this phone from Samsung is better than 3650 and than N-Gage because:
- it is smaller!
- it has totally rotable camera and display - you can make photos of yourself (of ANY BODY PART OF YOURSELF) and also of landscapes if you wish
- it weighs less
well, yes, Samsung has a little bit "quadratish style" but well, if you keep this phone in your hands then it doesn't matter! this phone = cool and solid. Nokia 3650 and n-gage = cheap, plastic holder of soap.
MaleBuffy 12-03-2003, 10:27 PM Well, you are right, but without NOKIAS Series 60 I wouldn't look twice at this device and continue with my supper :D Cool it Jpzr we all know your feelings about NOkia, and quite truly are tired of hearing it. Thanx for the pictures though! :D
thejpzr 12-03-2003, 10:48 PM Well, you are right, but without NOKIAS Series 60 I wouldn't look twice at this device and continue with my supper :D Cool it Jpzr we all know your feelings about NOkia, and quite truly are tired of hearing it. Thanx for the pictures though! :D
wrong ! it was not my feelings about the company!!
today I was at CeBIT 2003 and I was touching, TOUCHING, all these phones - these were my impressions and sincerely hardware-wise this phone from samsung is very close to my ideal cell phone of all times...
by the way: speaking of symbian phones - I wanted to see also the symbian phone from Benq - so I went to Benq's stand at CeBIT and you know what? instead of the phone there was, behind a glass, a photo of the phone that somebody cutted out with scissors!!! but samsung on the hand was showing SEVERAL real, operation phones with symbian, phones that have solid impreession ... of course don't get excited too much about this phone from samsung with symbian - I have heard that it comes in the 2nd half of this year...
so, malebuffy, it was TOUCHING GADGETS and feelings about gadgets. not related to companies associated...
MaleBuffy 13-03-2003, 03:08 AM I will give you my impressions of Cebit the day after tomorrow. :D. As I said this is an ideal phome for me too, but I wont flame Nokia just becasue after some months later another company has made a better phone. I am happy for Samsung and Symbian. But dont forget, the only reason I consider this phone, IS Symbian AND Series 60.
kguinamard 13-03-2003, 10:04 AM When I was looking for information on the new samsung I noticed this about a new moto phone, the A920. It say's that it runs Symbian OS ver 7 and has a 208*320 display, does that mean it's UIQ based.
http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?id=288
Looks a little large but it is (supposedly) designed for 3g networks, it has a direction pad and more importantly does video calling.
Kieron
MaleBuffy 13-03-2003, 02:13 PM It very much looks like it.
thejpzr 13-03-2003, 05:48 PM Thanks for the photos jpzr - looks like a really nice phone.

But seriously, I thought the press had missed the Samsung announcement with all the hullabalou they made about the new Samsung Palm OS 5 device. Only references to the Samsung Series 60 deives I found where on El Reg and also PMN communications (http://www.pmn.co.uk/20030312samsung.shtml)

J2theIZZO 16-03-2003, 07:29 PM That bloody phone rocks, the more I see the more I want.
I hope it isn't another one of those, well it's going to be released Q3-Q4 2003, but that actually means Q2 2004....I love the looks and the screen setup even though i've never been a huge fan of flip phones.
It runs S60 too which is another added bonus, lots of software available right now. Gimmie, Gimmie, Gimmie :D
brick 17-03-2003, 04:09 AM Samsung has always had bad design and aesthetics. They are strong on the technology front though.
Notice how with screen rotated Samsung reads upside down?
Joke.
thejpzr 17-03-2003, 05:30 AM Samsung has always had bad design and aesthetics. They are strong on the technology front though.
.
stron on technology? this Symbian/Series60 phone from Samsung doesn't have Bluetooth! is it "strong on technology"?
Dazler 17-03-2003, 08:57 AM When will they ever bring us a GUI that looks good? :s
Look at the ugly graphics :s

Marius 18-03-2003, 04:46 PM being a series 60 phone does that means all the applications i have on my 7650 can be installed on this phone??
J2theIZZO 18-03-2003, 07:48 PM Yup should do :)
Marius 18-03-2003, 08:01 PM aahhhh
I think im in love,This phone seems to be great..excellent shape love the screen.....and best off all its a series 60 phone..
now I know what to get next 8) but the only thing bad about it seems to be no bluetooth :(
Marius 18-03-2003, 10:05 PM does this phone have a loud speaker?
stingbandel 24-03-2003, 12:30 AM so there is no Bluetooth tech on this phone?

Maaan that phone looks sweet. might put off a 3650 for one of those if i can find roughly when it will be out! (read somewhere Q3 this year?)
Not too fussed about the bluetooth, it supports USB apparantly. and it has a "normal" keypad which would probably stop me from throwing the phone at the wall or on the floor.
oh and did i mention it's an amazing looking phone?! ;)
Also, in theory judging by what i have seen from other samsung phones the screen should be of higher quality? i havn't seen a 3650 in action for a while i must admit, can anyone confirm whether the samsung screens are of better quality than the nokia ones?
ConceptVBS 27-04-2003, 01:33 PM Yes. The 3650 has a 4096 color LCD (older samsung lcd screen), while the D700 has the 65k+ color LCD (newer samsung lcd screen).
Anyone have any information on when this awesome phone will be available in the US?
Dazler 01-05-2003, 04:32 PM It didn't had games, video, camera or anything else to test it. So all I can say is that it is just another series 60
Anyone have any information on when this awesome phone will be available in the US?
It's already approved by FCC. Check http://www.phonescoop.com for more details.
Just wondering. If it supports GSM, does it mean i can use a SIM card with it?
Just wondering anyone knows how strong the thing that holds the lcd to the phn? Will constant twisting just weaken it? Those who actually had hands on, how does it feel?
Does it feel loose of something?
Also seen some sites that says the D700 has bluetooth and some says it doesn't. Anyone can confirm this?
Cheers
The D700 should have bloototh because of two reasons.
1. @ Cebit they told that bluetooth is not released in the Cebit-Phone but it will be in the Final-Phone. They also told that the antenna will be inside the phone.
2. The Series60-Specification sais that a phone with this OS must have Bluetooth.
Greetz Birba
That's great.
Can't wait for the phone to be launched. Heard its going to be released in Europe first. Might get a friend to get it for me first ....(am from asia).
Dunno if it will work. Uses a SIM card on GSM networks right?
Just wondering. If it supports GSM, does it mean i can use a SIM card with it?
As opposed to what? :-? I dont think you'd have much choice but to put a SIM card in it
john74 31-05-2003, 09:48 PM great looking phone
All the cool phones going to Europe and Asia! The US is the big, rich market! Why do we get the crap that falls off the boat? Big corporations are taking advantage of us!
All the cool phones going to Europe and Asia! The US is the big, rich market! Why do we get the crap that falls off the boat? Big corporations are taking advantage of us!Big corporations are not taking advantage of Americans (no more than any other individual with purchasing power), but big protectionist American carriers/operators, American corporations (like Qualcomm & Motorola) and the American government have fragemented the American market and put American people at a disadvantage. ;)
For anyone following the market of world of mobile/cellular communications, it is no surprise that major global manufacturers sees the US as an important, but nevertheless as a secondary market.
It is the GSM/EGSM 900/1800 MHz network market that's the biggest and primary cellular phone market in the world (far larger than any other).
Most manufacturers target that market first as they can use the same hardware base in almost any country in the world.
Even as there are large GSM carriers/operators in the US, they have to use a different frequency, 1900MHz, so manufacturers have to use a different radio module, or a so called tri-band radio that can handle all three frequences (900/1800/1900) for the US market GSM phones.
i wonder how tough the screen is...i mean theres no "front" screen, so you could rotate it around before you put it where ever you keep it i guess...but anyways looks pretty cool. any estimates on the price?
hi guys.. do you know how much this fone actually/approximately costs???
is it really better than samsungs v200c version?
coz some say that v200c could be upgraded... im not sure if it would match d700's features though..?
prozac 10-06-2003, 10:57 AM How to compare? the d700 is a symbian phone...... the v200 is not..
Any news on when the phone is going to be released?
Any news on when the phone is going to be released?
Not in singapore... just contacted Samsung, and they said no news yet.
Any news on when the phone is going to be released?

and i e-mailed Samsung UK via their site, but no reply at all >.<
Thank you for your email dated 2.7.03 regarding the SGH-D700.
There are currently no release date for that model in the UK. If Samsung decide to release it in the future then details will be posted on www.samsungmobile.com and www.samsungelectonics.co.uk
i hope that means "no release date YET" and not "no release date, ever"
:-/
sanjg2k02 12-07-2003, 12:46 PM Does this Samsung Series 60 phone support Multi Media Card?? Otherwise, 4 MB is far too little.
yeah it has a MMC slot on it, i think if you check on page 3 of the thread there is an image of the slot..
J2theIZZO 17-09-2003, 05:03 PM
Still waiting <taps foot impatiently>
Kyuro 18-09-2003, 03:30 PM as am i. i might e-mail samsung again, stalking is fun ^_^
but i am now torn, the D700 or the 6600. decisions decisions. which will come first will probably decide though, cos i have no patience at all.
J2theIZZO 18-09-2003, 03:44 PM 6600 *will* be released before the D700, that's almost a certainty!
I to am not at all patient but I'm not a big fan of the 6600 or any other S60 devices at the moment, I like the design of the D700 better than just about any other phone I can think of...I'm hooked
E-Mails to Samsung aren't getting me anywhere either....Malebuffy was told by Samsung that it won't be released in the UK at all!, but they could have been talking about the MS powered version me thinks
langdona 19-09-2003, 03:06 PM The D700 may be nearer than we think. This article (http://www.koreaherald.co.kr/SITE/data/html_dir/2003/09/20/200309200009.asp) posted today has this quote.
"Samsung plans to sell smart phones that feature an on-phone operating system to run software in North America from the third-quarter. The company is also preparing to export new cell phones powered by the Symbian operating system to Europe beginning in the fourth-quarter. "
J2theIZZO 19-09-2003, 08:17 PM Thanks for that...fingers crossed it'll be here in time for my birthday :)
MaleBuffy 19-09-2003, 08:20 PM Yes but you wont be here, you lucky %$%*^%$*$! :D
J2theIZZO 19-09-2003, 09:53 PM :D
Kyuro 19-09-2003, 10:08 PM anyone fancy a trip to samsung HQ Korea? ;) i bet we could perform an adequate raid and come out with a couple of handsets....
Thinking about my current money situaion (i.e. none) i probably can't afford the 6600 yet, so roll on D700!
J2theIZZO 19-09-2003, 10:11 PM I know a few people in Inchon, Korea i'll have a word for you :D
oh my god... soon to be released!!! i can't wait now!!!!

Kyuro 20-09-2003, 07:33 PM But you would have enouh money to travel to Korea & back? ;)
...blast! foiled already! but if i could build a plane to fly me to Korea, then have the plane turn into a robot and take the phones, and then fly back, i would name it plane-bot.
...
but anyway yeah that was today's randomness completed.
ConceptVBS 21-09-2003, 07:02 PM anyone fancy a trip to samsung HQ Korea? ;) i bet we could perform an adequate raid and come out with a couple of handsets....

Great idea. I think there will be more than a "couple". :D Make sure to take some of the phones being developed in their secret R&D center while at it. 8) There must be a reason why they banned camera phones in their research centers...
Schizophrenic 22-09-2003, 02:57 PM It doesn't have bluetooth, does it ?
It doesn't have bluetooth, does it ?Correct. It doesn't (will not).
Schizophrenic 23-09-2003, 12:57 PM Thanks for the info, some people are arguing that it has BT..
They are stupid indeed...
Kyuro 23-09-2003, 05:10 PM is it now confirmed that it does not have BT?
there have been conflicting opinions, ranging from the weird "it's in the series 60 spec" to the "it wasn't in the cebit handset but will be in the release" (both i think were in the same post in this thread ^_^ incedently how long would it take to swim to Korea? just a thought...
J2theIZZO 23-09-2003, 08:06 PM For all you crazy Samsung fans i've created a forum in the S60 section :D
