Available now on many Nokia 5800 XpressMusic product codes, is a minor firmware update, v21.0.025, clocking in at 4MB over-the-air. To check if it's available for your phone, type in '*#0000#' into the virtual keypad and then 'Check for updates'. v21.0.025 brings interface speed enhancements, numerous bug fixes and a new 'breathing light' setting/control. Please comment below if you spot anything major that needs adding to this story!

Read on in the full article (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/9337_The_Nokia_5800_moves_ahead-now.php).

Thanks for the heads up. My Euro is now updated OTA with UDP working perfectly.

No typing aid/predictive yet, this is the feature I want more than all else.

It breathes slowly when everything's normal and the screen is dimmed etc. If you get a message then the breathing rate is quickened. At least that's how I think it's supposed to work. Will have to wait until I get a message!

2 good things I've noticed are

1) Bug fix on the text entry on some webpages (most notably the mobile version of facebook) where you couldnt move back or forth in the text
2) cut and paste within web browser! yay!

Is there a single location we can submit things we find to compile a change log?

You can now edit large textfields (like the one I am typing in right now) in the Internetbrowser. Before, you could only add stuff at the end, because the cursor movement did not work properly. This you can move around like you should.
Thats great, now I can use my Wiki on the go

How do you do that?

There's always been a notification light on the 5800, the white button flashes when the screen is switched off and there's a message or missed call.

I can't find any "breathing light" so far...

Aergh, it didn't update the first time, just restarted with existing firmware.

But I tried again and it worked. :-)

I've just used the "App Update" application (in the applications folder), and it lists Mail For Exchange. Is this anything to do with the firmware update, or did that appear earlier?

did they fix the dial pad bug? on the dial pad, there are no letters, so if you want to dial 1-800-FLOWERS, you are supposed to just magically memorize the letters. what a horrible design flaw by nokia. god forbid, someone has to enter a unique password for voicemail or something, forget about it!

I don't think that's a bug so much as something that is not used so much in europe, those mnemoics aren't popular. But no, there are no letters on the keys.

The loss of the iPlayer downloads is a bit rough though, I can't understand why Nokia and the BBC can't get it together on this. I will stick at V20 until someone confirms downloads still works.

There's a little flag appearing now on wi-fi connections that will connect (have security details cached).

As Quagmire says, that kind of mnemonic just isn't used in Europe, and all phone passwords are numbers. That's probably why they aren't on the virtual keypad dialler, there just isn't any call for letters on phone diallers here, so it's not so much a bug as a cultural difference.

BUT... it's a very good point though, as it would help the 5800 sales in North America. Nokia ought to include letters on the virtual keypad of the North American versions of their touch devices.

The funny thing is, the virtual T9 keyboard has the letters-- its just that a different number-only virtual keypad is accessed when dialing.

Not having the letters on the dialing screen makes perfect sense to me. It's a visual indication that you can type only numbers, just the same as it is if you manually set it to "numbers only mode".

Basically I personally like it just the way it is, but I can see why having an option somewhere to switch display of the letters one would be an improvement (especially for USA-ians) and that nokia should have thought about that from the start.

you guys are just being silly. every european phone i have purchased ALWAYS has letters on the dial pad. this is an oversight. there are times when i call my bank, and they ask me to enter the first 3 letters of the month in question, and that would be impossible on the 5800. it was a bug, and its been proved as a bug. hell, the letters are there in the T9 dial pad. they simply forgot. tell me this, how would you dial 1-800-FLOWERS from the 5800? you couldnt. and the north american version is missing the letter as well, so its not a european thing. its a horrible nokia screw up, which STILL hasnt been fixed with a firmware update.

I dont know why there is all this fuss about alphabets on the dial pad. We all have been using these keypads for so long on non-touch phones that i am sure we know where the alphabets are. Try using them anyways. Am sure you will not miss..

1-800-FLOWERS in europe would be given as 1-800-3569377, and that is how the number would be advertised and distributed. Europeans use their brains and not infant school learning aids to enter phone numbers.

That's because you have to use those buttons to enter 'text' on those phones. It's common sense, not silly. Keep the interface clean etc.

It has nothing to do with using it to dial phone 'numbers'. Hence it is still present for 'text' input in T9 input.

But if the US is big on the use of this, then it's not exactly a difficult thing for Nokia to do and they should do it...

Unregistered - you do realise you are not 'dialing' or typing letters right?

The 1-800-FLOWERS menemonic is just that - an easier way to distribute or remember the number. The phone makes the same dial tone whether you press D, E or F as they are all on the number 3 key.

Nothing to do with letters in the phone network or typing a word....

sonofagun!!! iPlayer if fuked is it!!?? Jeezus, this needs to be fixed. Somebody pls confirm when this is fixed.

Also annoying how the alarm does not default to the alphanumeric keypad, unless you happen to use that as your text-input method on other apps on the 5800. Now WTF is the use in setting an alarm with the full qwerty keyboard option? Nokia should have fixed this by now

In other news; T-Mobile UK flavour of v20.0.12 is now available in Nokia Software Updater. Installed first time for me, it now has a T-Mobile theme. Data was preserved, except the home screen shortcuts have been hijacked by w'n'w and T-Mo's mobile jukebox.

Over The Air updates are still not possible, as there is no Server defined. :-(

Actually, IMHO, a dial pad with letters would be useful as well if it can be linked to the contacts application in that we are able to search for contacts just by tapping on the relevant keys that correspond with the letters of the contact name.

Vodafone also released v20.0.012 (20.0.012.224.06) recently - I got it last night via PC download for my vodafone UK blue 5800XM.

The main difference seems to be that they've replaced the nokia hands with a vodafone blob animation when you turn the device on.

Not sure if it was broken before, but text entry forms on a website are also not working so well when they're large. I get a return glyph inserted when I add a new line, which I'm sure used to be removed when the new line was inserted. Now it stays there.

If your wondering why the battery life on your 5800XM goes down after installing this update it's because it overclocks the CPU of the 5800XM to 434MHz apparently.

I have tried to do this update OTA. Not happening. Getting an error everytime I try! when using the GPRS connection I get a connection error and if I try via WiFi it says server not available. ARGG. I'll wait until later to try again. I have had a setting issue where when in home network everything with data is okay, but in roaming network I cannot get a data connection at all. Worked with carrier and Nokia. No real solution except to re-load the entire firmware. This didn't happen untl I loaded Nokia messaging. Could this have messed it up? Or is loading the messaging client just a coincidence to something else?

I restarted the phone and closed all erroneous apps running in the background and was able to do the OTA. Updating as I type this.

Hello, the green dial button on my 5800 does not bring up the list of last dialled numbers any more. Is this a bug (feature) of V21.0.25, or have I done something wrong??
