View Full Version : Bluetooth USB Adapters ^^
onixx 08-02-2003, 05:43 PM OK. I've read enough *terrible* things about Bluetooth and Nokia 7650, so I'll make a clear question:
Does anybody know a Bluetooth USB Adapter that really works? I'm not talking about little tweaks/drivers, etc...
I was going to buy one, but after reading a few topics, I decided to wait, and if I don't find any solution, I'm going to buy IR... :-?
Thanx in advance
Zipper 08-02-2003, 05:59 PM NAME YOUR COUNTRY!
IF your in the UK, the novatech branded USB Bluetooth device at www.novatech.co.uk works a dream, Its very competitivley priced. [The lowest proce USB Bluetooth Device I have seen so far].
petran 08-02-2003, 09:36 PM I don't think it's so hard to make it work after all...
I already had an IR when I decided to take my chances and buy the Gigabyte BT dongle for 45euro. I had not heard of a success story with it before, but after reading this forum and using the latest windcom driver, it worked like a charm. Now I always carry it with me.. :)
I have a 3com usb adaptor at work which works fine, thou my pcmcia card for the laptop will not allow sending from the phone.
Where can I get the latest widcomm driver?
onixx 08-02-2003, 11:27 PM My country? Belgium, but I don't think it makes much difference.
Petran: can you please tell me the model of your BT adapter and the site where you downloaded 'windcom' drivers [if you can explain why do he have to download new drivers, I would be greatful].
Thanx!
petran 09-02-2003, 09:09 AM Gigabyte currently has one model, BTD-01.
I use widcomm version 1.3.2.7 which can be found HERE (http://www.billionton.com.tw/extra/download.htm). (I searched (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/phpBB2/search.php) this forum to find it, you could too!! I hadn't kept it!!)
It does not work well with the version included in the package, file sending does not work I think, that's why... New versions in anything fix bugs and add functionality, anyway.
onixx 09-02-2003, 02:21 PM Petran, I didn't understand your answer. First you wrote:

And now:
It does not work well with the version included in the package, file sending does not work I think
So, does it work or not?
JyriK 09-02-2003, 02:41 PM I think he meant that the drivers on the CD that came with BT didnt work.
But getting the new widcomm version 1.3.2.7 drivers helped.
onixx 09-02-2003, 02:54 PM So installing those drivers is the solution to make any BT usb adpater to work perfectly with the 7650?
JyriK 09-02-2003, 03:15 PM Nope. But usually helps, if the BT uses widcomm drivers.
petran 09-02-2003, 10:43 PM I think he meant that the drivers on the CD that came with BT didnt work.

iam suing MSI uSB and it works like a charm. I know a lot of people that si satisfied with it as well. Also it is a CLASS I device meaning it has high power thus higher range of coverage.
For enabling, e.g., Billionton USB BT dongle with Widcomm to work with PC Suite, read here:

willbrady 10-02-2003, 02:54 PM We have a 3com usb bt model 3creb96-eu.
£20 more expensive than most others but works perfectly.
I don't think it uses widcomm drivers but it's own, perhaps thats why it works..
onixx 10-02-2003, 03:39 PM Does that usb dongle (3COM 3creb96-eu) work perfectly? No problems with XP/Nokia Suite?
BIGBANG 11-02-2003, 07:54 AM iam suing MSI uSB and it works like a charm. I know a lot of people that si satisfied with it as well. Also it is a CLASS I device meaning it has high power thus higher range of coverage.
can u please name the model number?
mindlight 11-02-2003, 04:20 PM Does anyone know if this works when it comes to syncing Nokia 7650 with outlook and so on?
Anyone using it today who can tell pros and cons?
Regards,
Mindlight
onixx 12-02-2003, 06:11 PM Do all sync functions work perfectly with that msi model and with the 3com one?
BIGBANG 17-02-2003, 01:55 PM Hello there ppl .. after much search in the local market ... i only managed to find the following BT devices ... so if anyone has used them and KNOW that they work with PC suit please advice me ...and they are:
* IO Gear GBU301 Bluetooth to USB Adapter (price is almost double the others)
* Bluetake BT009V (Crystal Series)
* Billionton USBBT02-X Bluetooth USB Adapter
* Someone has promised me an MSI BT ... but I don’t know which module ??
P.S. I use Windows XP, Home SP1
Ratkat 17-02-2003, 03:42 PM I am using Mitsumi BT Dongle, but with modified MSI drivers (from a post of this forum), also changed registry entry to allow sending both ways.
Works fine sending files to phone by right clicking on file and sending straight to phone
Sends files phone to PC
Works perfectly with Nokia PC Suite
couldn't ask for more, if anyone needs full detail of how to get it to work just ask
Could you please post the details as so far noone I know has been able to get the Mitsumi BT adapter to work with BT.
Bob
:D
Yes that was me, I am still having problems logging in (I keep timing out and cannot get in without logging out and back into my work machine!!!)
:(
Ratkat 17-02-2003, 05:11 PM Right here goes
1. Uninstall ANY instance of Bluetooth sw in your computer (Widcomm, Mitsumi BT Suite, Blue Manager.. watever)
2. Restart the computer (remember to unplug the mitsumi from the usb port)
3. Download the MSI Software (I haven't tried the rest yet but this one works fine for me)
http://download.msi.com.tw/support/dvr_exe/bt45.exe
4. Install the sw and restart your computer.
5. Plug in your mitsumi and go to your device manager.
6. You should see an unknown USB DEVICE.
7. Now here comes the real deal. Go to C:\Program Files\Microstar\Bluetooth Software\bin\btwusb.ini
8. Open that file with a notepad and edit the following line.
VID_0db0&PID_1967 to
VID_03EE&PID_641F
There are two instances of it. So change BOTH of them. This line is to allow windows to detect the mitsumi device that u plugged in.
9. Save and restart your computer.
10. Go to your device manager -> select the USB Device -> Reinstall driver
11. Select the microstar path that i have previously mentioned and choose btwusb.ini
12. Windows should install the necessary sw for it !!
13. Restart the comp again and go to your BT Places.
14. Do a search for devices and VOILA !!! You will see your 7650 !
To use with PC Suite
1. Click on the mRouter icon in the system tray and put a tick in the bluetooth boxes, mine is com port 8 but it may vary, if it doesn't connect straight away, untick and tick until it does.
2.You will see it connect, open PC Suite and your away and running.
To send files to PC (when pc suite is NOT connected) change the following
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Widcomm\BTConfig\Servic es\0004
In this key folder, you'll find another key, named:
"AcceptOther" <-- that (on those that cannot send files is set to '0x0000000')
Just set this key to 0x0000001.
Hope this works for you, as it works fine for me
any probs just ask
Thanks RatKat, you are a star
Have a :bday: on me.
I havn't got the Mitsumi myself, but a collegue has, if it works for him I will investigate in one myself (as it is probably the cheepest on the market)

lordagaemmemnon 18-02-2003, 04:42 AM Hi, I currently bought an MSI USB bluetooth transcieving key. How can I make this work with my nokia 7650? can anyone please help me....
daveyjohn 21-02-2003, 08:02 PM Right here goes
8. Open that file with a notepad and edit the following line.
VID_0db0&PID_1967 to
VID_03EE&PID_641F
Woohoo!! Ratkat, you're a f*%king genius!!!! :D :D :D
Your fix works! I don't believe it! Finally, I've been able to backup my phone via bluetooth with the Mitsumi adapter.
I really cannot thank you enough. Seriously.
Just out of interest, how on earth did you work out the changes that needed to be made to the btwusb.ini file ??
I Use the 3com Bluetooth USB adaptor 3CREB96-EU
It works perfectly with Nokia PCSuite 1.1.0
I run windows 98SE though
The setup was tricky but the following page solved all problems
http://www.ocworkbench.com/2002/nokia/7650review/p4.htm
For Windows XP, I think you need to upgrade to Nokia PC Suite 1.2.0 at
http://www.nokia.com/cda1/0.1080.2015.00.html
and also to firmware 4.46 ???
Wow I guess I'm not the only one. Now I know why Nokia was close to losing it all. Guess what -I made a formal complaint after they told me that the only specified Bluetooth device tested with the 7650 is from thier subsidary company Socket Com. Well- Bill Gates is not alone. It's a pcmcia card so rendered useless to my grunty, pleb like, un yuppified desktop.
I strongly advise all of you to make formal complaints to Nokia- I have.
Oh, I 'll try that Widcom driver upgrade! - Here's for crossing my fingers
Thumnmilk
I had the same reply from Nokia in South Africa.
I lodged my complaint, but I doubt if it will make a difference
Their reply was that although it might work with other Bluetooth adaptors, they can't say as they only tested it with Socket com pcmcia card. Very poor excuse I Think
jimbo.mars 27-02-2003, 10:13 PM Hi all,
I am also looking for everyone's expertice advise. I've seared the fourms for advice on USB Bluetooth Adapters and still cannot decided which one to get. I have narrowed it down to:
Belkin USB Adapter - £39.99
Bluetake BT007 Dongle - £49.98
MSI 6967 - £27.79
The prices don't matter, but thourght I'd put them up.
I have been told the Bluetake has quite an impressive range, the MSI is very small + the range is fairly good and the Belkin is good quality + has good range but depends on the other device.
I want to be able to use Bluetooth through about 3 walls. But I also want it to be somewhat portable. Basically, which one of these 3 do you think is the best for range (inc walls) and portability.
Don't know much about Bluetooth.
Can you please tell me your opinions on on these. Thank You!
Ratkat 28-02-2003, 07:05 AM I think you'll be lucky to get any of them to work through 3 walls, I can get about 15metres away before i lose connection, but stick a couple of walls in the way it drops the connection quite easily sometimes only 3metres  away as the crow flies so to speak.
jimbo.mars 28-02-2003, 11:00 PM Ratkat,
What bluetooth adapter are you using?
I think I may go for the MSI 6967 as i've been looking at reviews on the internet and it seems quite good.
Jimbo
I use the 3com USB adaptor.
Range quite good, Inside a briefcase (10m), but drops to +/- 4m through one wall only. No go with 2 walls at 5m.
One word of advice, Regardless of which one you choose, make sure that you have someone to help you with the setup. It can be tricky!!!
jimbo.mars 02-03-2003, 02:40 PM I will do and thanks for the help Doc and Ratkat.
mattw 02-03-2003, 02:51 PM im looking at the MSI MS-6967 or the Mitsumi. I currently haven't found a site as cheap as Jimbo for the MSI, but the Mitsumi is all over ebay cheaply.
The MSI says it has 100m range so is possibly better, but i dont want to get it if its going to be a bugger to set up with a 7650, whereas i can see that the Mitsumi is widely in use by people here with success.
has anyone got a MS-6967 working without any trouble yet?
Mattw 100m range?
100 ft would be impressive.
mattw 02-03-2003, 05:44 PM well thats what the site said, but i can't say either way as i dont have one
you can get bt devices with these kind of ranges, but not usually ones that small. I would imagine that the ability of the 7650 to transmit data will limit the range significantly as well
