Where should Symbian go? The Smartphones will soon be slowly be coming out and Micro$oft will be shown the door (well, we can all dream), so where do you think Symbian should go next? Where are the gaps in the functionality offered by the current plethora of device designs?
While the world focuses on the Smartphone, is the PDA dead? I think not. Is there potential for a real, new, powerful Symbian PDA.
I know I can dial in to my office RAS server, but what can I do once I'm there? I'd love to be able to map to network shares and transfer files, so what about wireless LAN?
Much as I adore the Series 5 machines, we are yet to see a non-M$ PDA that can expand its functionality to use wireless LAN technology (I don't know about the Series7, but is that a PDA anyway?) to its full. Apart from a memory slot, IrDA port and standard serial port, there's not much room to take advantage of newer technology. No USB, no PCMCIA, no nothing.
Comparing OS with OS, Symbian urinates over the PocketPC (and the world knows it - deep down).... but look at all the peripherals the M$ fanboys have to play with; TV cards, wireless LAN cards, VGA cards to name but a few.
Not for one moment do I regret selling my PocketPC for my 9210, but it doesn't mean I've forgotten how to 'want'.
Or maybe this is a direction in which the Symbian based device was never intended to go? If this is the case, what is the future for the 9000 series Nokias?
And anyway, why not steal ideas from M$, they've been pinching everybody else's ideas since the year dot.
In other words..... what I have is nice, but I want more.[ This Message was edited by TANKERx on 2002-03-08 2210 ]
