View Full Version : The N95 8GB gets ASR!
slitchfield 17-04-2008, 02:13 PM The Nokia N95 8GB just got a minor firmware update, to v20.0.016 (from v15). Apart from a few bug fixes and optimisations, the main changes are the addition of Automatic Screen Rotation (driven by the accelerometer, as on the N82) and support for more Bluetooth headsets. See below for details and comments.

Unregistered 17-04-2008, 03:41 PM Can ASR be done on the standard N95???
Arcade 17-04-2008, 03:42 PM Hey, can anyone give some more info on the Bluetooth headsets thing ?
Bosambo 17-04-2008, 03:43 PM They can...but they won't
Unregistered 17-04-2008, 03:48 PM For a momenet I thought you have something new Steve :)
It is quite an old "news" we got and publish full change log few weeks ago?
MaciekBora 17-04-2008, 03:52 PM Darn it! No UDP!?
Unregistered 17-04-2008, 03:54 PM Hey, can anyone give some more info on the Bluetooth headsets thing ?Last but not less important, the Nokia N95 is the first S60 phone with support for A2DP/AVRCP profiles, sure N91 has the A2DP but it lacks AVRCP and therefore A2DP isn't very handy on this phone because you can enjoy music wirelessly but you can't control it remotely.

Unregistered 17-04-2008, 04:04 PM If the "foundations" of UDP had been layed down, surely it would have been mentioned in Teo's changelog.
Unregistered 17-04-2008, 04:17 PM the "combo memory" mentioned in Teo's changelog is probably the foundation for Udp, which we'll find in the next update.
Glad it's out for euro codes as i updated on a obscure product code and have had issues with both the download app and the silent profile shortcut using # not working.
Will reinstall with the euro code.
slitchfield 17-04-2008, 04:23 PM @Unregistered: No, this is new news, v20 firmware was effectively just vapourware for most N95 8GBs until lunchtime today. Today was the big release for most of the Euro product codes! 8-)
Unregistered 17-04-2008, 04:24 PM Teo mentioned that the combo memory wouldn't benefit us(the end user) in any way so I doubt it has anything to do with UDP.
Unregistered 17-04-2008, 05:51 PM "If the "foundations" of UDP had been layed down, surely it would have been mentioned in Teo's changelog."
The n82 came with but never advertised with UDP until the first update(and no change log ever mentioned it). Probably the same kind of situation.
I don't really agree with this firmware as vaporware before today. It exists and can be updated at service points. It just wasn't on available on NSU.
Since the Black N82 comes with v20 already, does it exist since it shipped before the update NSU update?
Unregistered 17-04-2008, 06:04 PM If I remember correctly, Teo didn't post any changelogs for the N82 until the recent one for V20, but I may be wrong.
The firmware was infact available for many N95 8GBs via NSU for a long time now. Take for instance the UK Country Variation N95 8GB.
Unregistered 17-04-2008, 06:09 PM This seems like a relatively minor update. Do you think it's worth it? I already have rotate me installed and it can take me about 5 hours to reinstall all my apps and settings after a firmware update. What do you reckon?
Unregistered 17-04-2008, 07:36 PM Does Nokia internet radio work with the new firmware on WLAN? I keep getting "Connection Timed Out"
Unregistered 17-04-2008, 07:37 PM If you're happy with Rotateme and aren't experiencing problems it would be tempting to stay put. I went from V11 on my new N95 8GB handset, and fortunately the hack still works on this firmware (worth thinking about when weighing up the update - I probably won't update this handset again because I would imagine Nokia will close the hack down in their next firmware).
Ratkat 17-04-2008, 08:34 PM This firmware has been available on Euro 1 handset 01.01 for a few days now, I did mine last Saturday via NSU, perhaps they then removed it for a few days like the E90?
Unregistered 18-04-2008, 03:56 AM anyone have any idea when Maps 2.0 is officially out? Its already on Ads for new Nokia Devices
Unregistered 18-04-2008, 06:10 AM One new little thing that I have noticed already is that the Gps Positioning has been improved.
instead of the default bars that were very hard to see, they are now white outlines and white boxes. Makes it much easier to see if you are getting a fix.
the other annoyance for me was fact that I have two ngages now, some apps just dissapeared, and that both shareonline and maps reverted to earlier versions.
Maps updated fine to the version 2 however, and my reg code came over for naviation as well, so nothing major to complain about.

Unregistered 18-04-2008, 06:47 AM Mosh client doesn't work with the update.
hargs48 18-04-2008, 06:31 PM After this V20 update does the "old menu" style appear and stay permanent...I hope not...:icon13:
mtlexec 19-04-2008, 04:39 AM Wifi browsing seems to be working with less glitches. I would get connection errors at time and they don't appear anymore. Browsing if smoother. The doubled Ngage is anothing though
whatleydude 19-04-2008, 02:44 PM Dude,
Has the memory speed increased?
I have problems recording video straight to mass memory.
The image freezes etc - the only work around is to record to Phone Memory.
Which is a pain to say the least.
Would you (or someone) be able to check please?
Unregistered 20-04-2008, 12:14 AM @whatleydude
I had this problem when I updated from v11 to v15. What you need to do is reinstall the firmware again. It should fix the problem... To cut a long story short I still had some minor issues after reinstalling v15 firmware again. The video cam no longer stuttered but on some rare occasions the phone would take minutes to save a picture/video/"do a task" etc and at most other times it took seconds which is the norm speed.
Now I've upgraded again to v20 firmware everything seems to be running perfectly. Fingers X
I don't know why it effects some handset and doesn't others. Nokia screwed something up... If you google for "n95 8gb video stuttering firmware" you'll find others who have experienced this problem.
Unregistered 21-04-2008, 06:14 AM Great nokia startup seems to me slower and alarm clock is not working if phone is off.
I will downgrade.
Unregistered 22-04-2008, 01:02 PM Hi,
1) Does standard camera application have geotagging feature (like N82)?
2) What's the exact version number of Nokia Maps application pre-installed on the device? Is it still v1.2 wk48 b01?
BR
I've got an N95 8GB on 02 in the UK, product code 0559497. NSU only shows V15 which I already have. 02 say they don't restrict updates so any ideas why I can't get V20, or maybe when I can?
Thanks
Keef.
Re the alarm clock not working when phone is off I had the same problem with my N95 8GB. It turned out to be an issue with the DRM Common Solutions component that gets installed with some (maybe all?) Psiloc applications (e.g. IrRemote). Try uninstalling the DRM Solutions application, this worked for me :-)
Good luck...
fromfela 29-04-2008, 02:48 AM i chagering up my phone as i type this :)
Unregistered 12-05-2008, 06:43 PM It seems that the latest firmware is v15 Where did you saw that v20? Is it available only in USA?
Unregistered 02-06-2008, 05:03 PM Just a note, This is not yet avaliable for UK owners. :(
Unregistered 10-06-2008, 11:54 PM No geotagging. I also lost some installed apps (but fortunately not their settings), of course i mean after applying restore.
Unregistered 11-06-2008, 12:55 AM alarm works for me when phone off (n95 regular, .016)
saved pages - garbage is displayed always instead of a page
Ferrari51 23-06-2008, 08:10 PM I have an unlock n95 8gb. Will I have to re unlock it after I update the phone?
Unregistered 28-06-2008, 08:31 PM Previous poster did not have 20.0.016 installed..
Just tested and alarm still works if switched off.
Startup time seems as fast as ever.
Just love the auto screen rotate! Great for videos, browsing etc!
No bugs (yet)...
Vodafone upgrade via Nokia Update Manager
hongkongphooey6 29-06-2008, 01:08 PM Moved to 20.0.016 from O2 UK last week:
1. Hate the new ASR - so much slower than RotateMe as a separate application
2. MusicPlayer constantly freezing and refresh to pick up new tracks is just a joke
3. Reboot takes double the time it used to
4. Something is now eating 10MB of internal RAM to - and I have fewer applications and files than I did before the update
5. Gallery slower to refresh
Appreciate others may be having a better expericence - grateful for any thoughts on things to check for to improve mine :-)
