View Full Version : The E90 update arrives - 7.40.1.2
slitchfield 30-10-2007, 12:26 PM Like many others, I've on 1 hour 'refresh' on Nokia Software Update for what seems like weeks now. But the Nokia E90 update seems to have arrived and it's installing as I write this. Version number is 7.40.1.2 and I'll post comments and observations below as and when....
Read on in the full article (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/6158_The_E90_update_arrives-74012.php).
slitchfield 30-10-2007, 01:11 PM Arghh. Well, that was an anti-climax. For me, at least. The proto didn't like NSU and promptly died. 8-((
So it's over to you guys to supply any notable changes!
Meanwhile, I'm off to a Nokia Service Centre later in the week to try and resurrect my baby...
Dan Din 30-10-2007, 01:13 PM And my Nokia Software Updater (here in the UK) states that my old firmware is up to date!
Dan Din 30-10-2007, 01:16 PM As does the "Find the latest version" on the Nokia website. According to the Nokia website the latest version is: 07.24.0.3
matchstick 30-10-2007, 01:30 PM NSU definitely doesn't seem to like my Windows 2000 work PC :(
Fortunately it doesn't seem to have bricked the phone in the process so I'll try using XP when I get home....
Unregistered 30-10-2007, 01:32 PM I have an E90 from Singapore but changed the product code some time ago to UK Moca and the update is available through NSU even though the Nokia Software Availability web page states that it is not. The product code is 0533332.
NSU still states that I have the latest Firmware 07.24.0.3. But at least it installed an update of NSU itself.
jorge spain 30-10-2007, 01:42 PM AM DOWNLOADING THRU NSU 1.14
SLOW CONNECTION AS AM IN MEXICO, BUT DOWNLOADING OK, will update later.
Rgds
jorge spain 30-10-2007, 02:03 PM ok successfully downloaded and all data seems fine. It seems that you have to use NSU 1.4.14, it gave me a message saying unavavilable and tried again and it seems ok
Best rgds to all
Unregistered 30-10-2007, 02:10 PM Hi,
I've got one question: does E90 have 3D accelerometer like N95 (it gives notification about the phone tilt)?
thanks in advance!
slitchfield 30-10-2007, 03:50 PM No to an accelerometer.
Good news: my E90 lives! I'll post a Support entry (see the top tab) on what to do if anyone else hits the same problem! update: done - http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/support/item/When_everything_goes_horribly_wrong_in_Nokia_Softw are_Update.php
Steve 8-)
cooli 30-10-2007, 05:31 PM Seems to work for E90 in Jakarta: http://nokia-e90.blogspot.com/2007/10/new-firmware-v-74012-now-available.html
I'll update my Finnish E90 soon and report here if not totally covered already ;)
Biggzy 30-10-2007, 07:32 PM hasnt nokia added demand paging? oh well, dont look good for the n95-1 then, but then again, e90 dont need it as it has alot of RAM, hope n95-1 gets it tho
Unregistered 30-10-2007, 08:00 PM My UK Mocca E90, product code 0552464 still shows 07.24.0.3 as the latest firmware. (By both entering the product manually in Nokia UK's website and using the NSU software)?? Steve, is your product code different? Best Regards Nick
Pieter Wiltjer 30-10-2007, 08:07 PM Seems to mee that I have a l,ot more free RAM about 135 Mb after reboot. Would that mean that Demand Paging is active just like in N95-8Gb?

This UK mocca product code works-0533332
Unregistered 30-10-2007, 11:27 PM Basically, as many have observed, the release of the update seems to be staggered, using the product code to differentiate the phone. If you are impatient you can simply set the product code to one that works and off you go.
Here are the steps gleaned from various postings, I had mine updated in less than 20 minutes altogether:
1: Make sure the latest Nokia Software Updater (NSU) software is installed
2: Make sure that you have backed up the phone memory using the "Memory" application (in the Tools folder). This is done from the Options menu, then select "Backup phone memory"
3: Download the NSS software, this will let you modify the product code. Get it from the bottom of this page: www . b-phreaks . co . uk / software.htm
4: Unzip, then install the program, accepting the default settings.
5: Connect the phone with the USB cable.
6: Run the NSS program, once it starts click on the Scan for new device icon (the last on int he toolbar). This will connect to the phone.
7: Then click on the "Phone Info" tab in NSS
8: Now click on the button which says Scan (under Actions, different from the previous one)
9: Once the phone is found, click on the Read button in the "Production Data Edit" box. The various fields should be filled in.
10: Now click on Enable outside the "Product Code" field
11: Select a valid code (see other posts) from this list: allaboutsymbian.com / archive / t-62338.html, I used the UK Mocha one, worked for me.
12: Enter this code into the "Product Code" field, then click on Write.
13: That's it, now just do an update using the NSU program.
EuroJohn 31-10-2007, 01:20 AM I justed updated my software to version 7.40.1.2
However when I connect my phone to Nokia Device Status, it states that I am using to old software version 7.24.0.3
So I reconeected my phone to the Nokia Updater (NSU) and it states that my phone is up to date with software version 7.40.1.2. Strange that the Nokia Device Status program does not recognize that.
How can I find out exactly which version of the software is on my phone?
Is there a way to see that information directly on the phone?
Hardeep1singh 31-10-2007, 02:17 AM @Eurojohn, type *#0000# on your phone's screen to check your Firmware version
slitchfield 31-10-2007, 05:24 AM Some answers:
See the My-Symbian thread for all the product codes - I've never had to do anything like that. http://my-symbian.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32774&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=630
Try Device Status on the E90 itself - it reports the right (new) version. http://nds1.nokia.com/NOKIA_COM_1/Microsites/BetaLabs/applications/apps/devicestatus_1.1.86.sis
RAM - no, you're reading the wrong figure. The E90 now has 79MB free out of 109MB RAM total. With a 19MB ROM image, that makes 128MB, the full complement.
So no demand paging, then, but still oddles free compared to many S60 3rd Edition devices. And I've never managed to get the E90 down beyond about 40 to 50MB free 8-)
Unregistered 31-10-2007, 06:11 AM Anyone notice something odd with the characters on the qwerty keyboard?
For eg. "/" appears to type "\" and "," is typing "-"
Have i done something wrong during the update?
juwlz 31-10-2007, 11:16 AM That suggest to me that you've installed an update for a different country's variant of the E90 with a slightly different keyboard layout.
On the UK keyboard, the "-" character is immediately to the right of the space bar, and the comma is directly above it.
The full layout of the raised bit of the keyboard on my UK E90 is
1/!, 2/", 3/£, 4/$, 5/%, 6/^, 7/&, 8/*, 9/(, 0/)
qwertyuiop
asdfghjkl ;/: '/@
zxcvbnm,./ [Shift]
[Chr] z/|, [/] [Spacebar] -/_, +/=, #/~ [Chr]

Pieter Wiltjer 31-10-2007, 12:32 PM Unfortunately the bug in the call log. All mobile phone icons, also with fixed phones
Unregistered 31-10-2007, 02:11 PM Just updated (though the whole experience is quite worrying: the software update got to 2 mins to go then the phone turned off and then eventually NSU alerts you 'connection lost' but when you power on the phone, all is well and the new software is in place OK. You then have to cancel/abort NSU as if it wasn't successful. This happened when I upated to 7.24 originally too.). One minor point, Quickoffice seems to be 3.8.12 not 3.8.5 in this release.
KamHo 31-10-2007, 02:38 PM Definitely not an update for the faint-hearted! NSU twice lost the connection to my E90 and I had to power it off twice - once by removing the battery. Restarted both phone and PC and got there in the end.
From my experiences with it I would also advise against running NSU on a computer running Vista unless you really can't get access to one running XP.
Unregistered 31-10-2007, 08:37 PM Is it just me, or will BlackBerry Connect no loner work after the update? This messes up my life!
Any way to fix it? Just get an X through the symbol at the top, no matter what I did, have reinstalled a bunch of times.
Unregistered 05-11-2007, 09:14 AM same here! I lost my BB service since the firmware update. Apparently its something to do with BB client software being tied to FW. Looks like Nokia got itself into another tangle.
... meanwhile, waiting for someone at RIM/Nokia to come up with a fix...
Unregistered 05-11-2007, 11:38 AM ... and very sadly... theres no bb client actually for the latest firmware.
its a very very ugly situation nokia/bb throws there customers in because a firmware downgrade isnt possible anymore. hopefully they release a new client for the e90.

Liquid_Li0n 05-11-2007, 06:39 PM I read that a lot of updates fail or that the update is not for all product codes.
Would you take the risk to update it already or would it be better to wait some more weeks and to update then, because I don't like to start the product code etc. How about the warranty and so on then?
juwlz 05-11-2007, 07:03 PM If your signature is up to date, it's probably a moot point. Wait and see what firmware you get on your E90 when you get it ;-) You may find that it comes with the new firmware pre-installed anyway.
Somebody has already posted to say that you'll invalidate your warranty if you change the product code.
Other than that, it depends what your priorities are. Don't update if you want Blackberry connect (there doesn't appear to be any support for it). Update if you will make heavy use the internal GPS or any of the other fixes.

My signature is indeed updated and I'm going to use the wifi a lot, and the gps aswell but not so much. I also read that is was 20% faster so thats intresting aswell, its always a big risk upgrading your phone but I did it 3x times so far with other phones (N70, E61 twice) and that went smoothly
Cross fingers, I'm starting it almost now...
UPDATE:
Did the firmware upgrade and it went just fine except that it said that it was disconnected when 2min remaining and on the Nokia was displayed " Test Mode" Nokia but I did what the updater told me (to remove battery and start up again), I did and then clicked retry and then it went smoothly till update succesful.
So now I have the latest firmware :-)
Restored the backup now and it ok
have to update my signature ASAP ;-)
Unregistered 07-11-2007, 08:16 AM ... and is working well :)
Raven 10-12-2007, 02:26 PM To Steve and others,
Are you sure that firmware version 7.40 was the first firmware released to add A-GPS? I'm asking because I have firmvare version 07.38.0.2, and I get a fix using GPS in just a few seconds as well... No complaints here :)
Unlike my previous 6110 Navigator which took forever to lock on to the satellites...
slitchfield 11-12-2007, 05:27 AM 7.38 wasn't mainstream - which region are you in? Yes, I guess it's possible that this had A-GPS, but most people only had the choice of 7.24 or 7.40.
I wonder when the next update will appear?
pgamble 11-12-2007, 06:43 PM Hi Steve
I had my Vodafone E90 - code 552396 replaced by Nokia Care with a 'generic' E90 with Code 0548238.
I found the description of this code on another site which had a complete list. It was 'SWAP EMEA 1 - UK Mocca'.
Given that this is generic - unlocked - non carrier branded and UK .... I can't understand why I'm still not able to find a Firmware version later than 7.24.03.
Do you any ideas what is going on ?
Also Anovo claim that this device was manufactured on 4 December 2007. Is it possible to identify the build date ? I ask ... because it seems like it still has an earphone hiss and it also has the same screen I always had - not the 'hardened anti-reflective' one I had been told was on new devices.
Cheers
Paul.

Very strange. I'm also guessing that it was made much earlier than that. Best to take it up with the supplier etc. There's certainly no way a device that recent should have been 'built' with early firmware.
Adrian Wi 25-01-2008, 08:18 AM I updated from 7.24.03 to 7.40.1.2 by changing my product code from 0553342
to 0545991.
Worked fine and everything seemed to be alot faster until I came to use the internal keypad. A number of the qwerty keys (q/a/z/w) were transposed and the number keys were all different characters (needed to hold shift-1 to get the number 1)
Having read this thread I have now updated succesfully using the product code 0533332 (my phone was a UK O2 [unlocked] mocha version)
Did have me worried for a while and looking for the number of my nearest NSC!
Unregistered 18-02-2008, 12:49 PM I have two E90's and both have been updated with the latest firmware and the result is that the battery life has plummeted from two to three days between charges to daily charges! Anybody else experienced this at all?
Unregistered 16-04-2008, 08:16 AM I'm trying to do the update and NSS won't scan...
It finds the phone, but when I click "Scan" under the actions menu it says "Scan for product... Error" in the status bar. When I click "Scan" again it just says "Scan for product..." and does nothing.
I just noticed... under "Device Info" the last entry is ->Products Dir('products').......Not Found. Any way to solve this?
Any ideas what's wrong? Is it possible to write the new code without scanning?
Cheers.
clive6630 23-04-2008, 04:59 PM It's NSU, the latest one installs new connectivity drivers which dont work with NSS, you need to uninstall NSU and cable drivers from your machine and install an older version of NSU. But dont run it. Do the product code change with nss then run NSU, it'll update to the lastest one but your phone is already updated to the new product code. Update as normal. You can find older versions of nsu by searching on the internet.
