View Full Version : Unboxing the Nokia N95 8GB
slitchfield 18-10-2007, 08:53 AM It's here, it's black and it's very, very bad. And it's a production Nokia N95 8GB, not a prototype - this is the real deal. I'll be updating this story during the day, but for now read on for the photo proof!
Read on in the full article (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/6105_Unboxing_the_Nokia_N95_8GB.php).
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 08:58 AM please can we see (if the software is loaded) some n-gage shots (the app/games) also is the horizontal mode the same as the old 95 (d-pad on the right) or like the pics on the n-gage site (d-pad on the left like a gameboy/ ds/ psp) thanks alot!
Nick17 18-10-2007, 09:18 AM "Slang"-bad or real bad .. ? ;)
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 09:24 AM Getting rid of the lens cover - and more importantly the function of the cover slider activating the camera when opened - is a shopstopper for me.
I have found myself using my N95 more than any previous camera phone, mainly because it's so easy to slip the lens cover open and take a quick snap without any of the usual fumbling with buttons or menus.
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 09:28 AM my main request.. did battery life improve?
godeassi 18-10-2007, 09:39 AM Getting rid of the lens cover - and more importantly the function of the cover slider activating the camera when opened - is a shopstopper for me.
---------------------
Yes, I agree, this was a bad move. As usual, there's always something to stop a device from being perfect!
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 09:51 AM Anyone here dares to update thier N95 software with the N95 8GB software? Saw the product code, 0549487. Would be interesting to find out. :)
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 09:54 AM But with N95 8GB it is as easy. Just press and hold the "shoot" button for a sec and it will open the camera application. At least for me the N95 original lens cover could open accidentally. Sure you can also accidentally hold down the "shoot" button, but maybe it doesn't happen so often.
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 10:11 AM is the surface at the front side sensible for fingerprints? how about the slider mechanism? Is it better than that oft the regular N95?
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 10:13 AM Questions
1. The slider is smooth and doesn't have sidewards movement? and pressing buttons on top slide makes no movements
2. The hissing noise from the production N95 first batch has stopped?
3. The gps locks in short times ie under 1min.....
4. Light escaping from the front slide.....sidewards... ?
slitchfield 18-10-2007, 10:20 AM In no particular order:
- slider is *perfect*, but then so is my original N95, I bet they build early units with a lot more hands-on care and attention...
- battery here is much chunkier, at least 25% extra charge, possibly more with software optimisations etc.
- time from factory fresh to first GPS fix INDOORS on a window ledge was only 2 minutes - astounding!
- lens is as unprotected as on any other phone, but at least it's just as easy to clean etc.
- N-Gage app simply goes to holding place on the N-Gage site - I'll check for firmware updates daily and see if anything emerges
- no light escaping that I can see
- camera software much faster, shot to shot times at 5 megapixels around 3 seconds. Camera startup still around 3 seconds though
- have I mentioned it's black? 8-)
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 10:24 AM Does this one comes pre-loaded with the Spiderman III movie?
Viky
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 10:25 AM I think the main question would be, where did you buy it from? I live in finland, and here they still haven't hit the shelf, if they had i would be unboxing right now :)
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 10:36 AM Does it already come with "On Demand Paging"-enabled firmware?
soussef24 18-10-2007, 10:36 AM Lucky you, where did you got it???
Al3xandr3 18-10-2007, 10:45 AM The N95 8Gb its indeed a perfect phone! Congratulations for the possibility to be testing it already!
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 10:48 AM is the speed from/to the flash-memory via USB still as crappy as with the N95-1? for example, my MicroSD card brings about 6MB/s write speed in an external adapter on USB 2.0, but when used in the N95-1, its ounly about 1MB/s. now, when having even 8Gig interbal flash, it would take AGES to fill that with 1MB/s... hast this been improved? thanks!
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 10:50 AM The software should still be based on the same OS as N95 which means it's v9.2. Only v9.3 has 'on demand paging'.
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 11:02 AM Not true, N95 8GB has On Demand Paging
Orophin Anwarunya 18-10-2007, 11:06 AM After seeing this for myself at the show, i have to say that its is an awesome update to the N95. Those of you that are worried about a lens cover are missing the whole point entirely about this new iteration to the N95.
- Far better battery life
- Incredibly fast when compared to the old N95
- True multitasking. I was able to run Maps, Web, Google Maps, Ngage game, Music, and camera all simultaneously without memory full or involuntary exiting of another app.
- The screen is beautifully larger and bright. More crisp. Please don't mention resolutions, Nokia are using the industry standards for now.
- GPS was fine since it has AGPS built in by default. I got it to lock on in 3 minutes at the S60 party. Mind you, my old N95 performs the same ever since the AGPS upgrade.
- The new d-pad and softkey arrangement is quite an improvement. I had my doubts about its squat size at first, but in use it seemed more comfortable and the buttons protrude far enough to enable more accurate control. A much more tactile experience than the flatness of the old N95.
- I've never had issues with the slide of my N95 so i don't really have a base of reference, but the N95 8GB i tried out at the show had a sturdy enough slide. That said, its the worst item to test since it is preproduction demo unit, thus would have taken alot of beating from many show appearances.
- Yes the lens shutter doors have gone, but that is by no means a show-stopper and i'd say it worthy sacrifice for everything else the N95 8GB does right. I have never scratched the lens of my previous camera-phones, but if you know you are going to be hard handed or careless with this beautiful piece of kit, then i suggest you get Nokia 5500. I doubt anyone would be so bad with Cupertino's baby.
One thing that irks me about the N95 8GB is its lack of a memory card option. I've never been a fan of these type of phones because it limits it capabilities in future expansion, and that is a real shame for a platform that supports the SDHC standard. A 10GB or 16GB N95 would be quite awesome.
That said, I'm not sure if the support for those larger capacities are there and by the time those capacities become available, Nokia would have come out with another killer handset that will persuade you to ditch your N95 8GB or otherwise.
For now i at least the N95 8GB is a very interesting and worthy purchase. I hope Steve's full review will prove that right.

Unregistered 18-10-2007, 11:16 AM I don't think N95 8GB has ODP either. The software is still the same, S60 3rd Edtition FP1. It would new a new software upgrade for that to happen. And historically, Nokia has never updated the software in the phone eg. from 3rd Edition FP1 to FP2.
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 11:18 AM When will people get over the lack of lens cover. It doesnt need it. The lens cover is a dust trap anyway, Mine is covered and sometimes the cover opens in my pocket.
I dont think it will get scratched if the glass is as hard as the LCD because I have abused my phone a lot and still not a single scratch on the screen. If i maybe had diamonds rattling around in my pocket things would be different.
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 11:20 AM i have a n80 which doesnt have a camera lens cover....and i havent had any scratches or anything happen to it over the last 1 1/2 years. i dont have a case for my phone, its just always in my pocket.
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 11:22 AM I see they have squeezed one more app shortcut in the active standby!!
Could you do a shot of BL-5F next to BL-6F??
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 11:25 AM do you have the old original n95? can you please do a shot showing both turned on with the same screen?
ramkd 18-10-2007, 11:26 AM does it support games in landscape mode???
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 11:36 AM Hi Steve, thanks for your answers. it all sounds promising however....
you missed one of my questions:
hissing, does the earpiece hiss when on the phone 3g and gsm? I bought a N95 when it first came out and the hissing on the earpiece was unbearable!!! so bad I had to take it back.... So i have been waiting and now I want to try again with the N95 8Gb ...... however I am scared it'll hiss again!!!
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 11:40 AM Please don't swear at me when I ask this...can the new N95 show youtube videos (as the iphone does) or other flash video ? As an N80 owner within weeks of the end of my contract I'm really struggling to decide whether to go for the new N95 or the iphone...sorry, I know I'll get slated for this thought.....!
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 11:44 AM is it with Vodaphone Branding or without any branding?
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 11:44 AM Hi,
I would like know if the build quality of N95 is better than E90.At present i own an N73(ME).But the problem is that the joystick as well as the 'call' and 'disconnect' button is loosing its color. Now it has a reddish tinge.
I am afraid that, the same thing would happen to N95.What do you think about the soft keys.Is it painted plastic?
Earlier i had set my mind to buy E90, i have even ordered the memory card, now i am having second thoughts.
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 11:47 AM I cant find any information saying that the N95 8Gb has demand paging???????????????
where is the source of that?
Ratkat 18-10-2007, 11:59 AM Steve, noticed in your pics that the screen has a protector on.
Does this mean the the screen cover in now 'hard' not 'soft' like of the orginal N95?
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 12:00 PM what is the firmware version and date?
slitchfield 18-10-2007, 12:11 PM Yes, the N95 8Gb *DOES* have Demand Paging, it boots in 20 seconds and ROM-based apps start much quicker and take less RAM when loaded.
It's a limited implementation of Demand Paging though, and I don't think 3rd party apps will benefit. I'll investigate more for my full review.
The screen is hard and flush with the top surface, iphone-style 8-)
Firmware is 10.0.021, not that this means anything, of course.
USB transfer speed to the mass disk (E) is 1MB per second.
The unit I've got was from WOM World, as part of their triallist programme. And it's got to go back at some point, which will probably break my heart.... sob.
Nick17 18-10-2007, 12:13 PM I have a question for the "long run"; hope you have it long enough to test it..
Can the phone stay turned on for more than a week or so.. or, is the RAM really sufficient, or does the RAM show enough, but cause the phone still to restart (like sometimes happens with the E90)..?
Thank you.
What a lot of comments in a short amount of time.
Is it because the RAM is what a lot of people are asking for for years..?
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 12:25 PM any possibility of demand paging coming to the N95-1? saw the video on youtube and it shows 23mb free wit the web and another app open...
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 12:50 PM Heywhen is the full detailed review is coming :)
I am anxious ..
phattrance 18-10-2007, 01:00 PM try to test aftonbladet.se
thats a huge ram eating site :)
phattrance 18-10-2007, 01:04 PM about the webbrowser, when you visit a site and click on a news to read it and then to go back to the main page, does the browser go back to the link that you visited or does it go back to the top of the page?
the n95 browser goes back to top of the page ang thats really annoying since you got to scroll down everytime you read some news...
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 01:28 PM similar to the above question, can you run a game when in landscape mode, Snakes? and see what way the screen flips, thanks, im sure alot of peps are interested on the n-gage side.
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 01:40 PM Is the really loud constantly hissing by playing mp3 gone?
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 01:44 PM > N-Gage app simply goes to holding place on the N-Gage site - I'll check for firmware updates daily and see if anything emerges
There are some demo games included in the firmware.
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 01:50 PM can we see how these demo games run when launch from landscape mode, also is normal landscape (not game mode) the same oriantation as before?
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 01:52 PM 1mb a second transfer rate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
geeeeeezzzzzzzzzzz...... what did they do to the flash card?
disappointment........ 1mb is SLOWWWWWW
its got to be faster than that......right?
try larger files transfers..... maybe it has to be reformated to a different filesystem....
not comments on earpiece hissing???
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 02:22 PM Its the USB1.1 Speed. The flash has nothing to do with it, they still couldn't manage to fit an usb2.0 chip into it.
malerocks 18-10-2007, 02:30 PM Its the USB1.1 Speed. The flash has nothing to do with it, they still couldn't manage to fit an usb2.0 chip into it.
Surprising. Older models (i have an n93) have USB 2.0 though the data cable. Of course, I am reading a data card and not an internal flash memory in this case.
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 03:15 PM how breakable is the screen? and how scratch-resistant?
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 03:43 PM No memory card slot and no lens cover, two steps forward and one step back! A great phone for someone with no N95 but surely far from compelling for an N95 owner.
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 04:04 PM and why not? even n73 does it!
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 04:05 PM I just LOVE the flat top, with no raised screen bezel.
I feel you! Looks just awesome, and is way better for the screen!
i think that's ugly!
what did you think about it? i love N95 original, but this is a . . .
remember, that's my opinion. your opinion may be differrent.
by the way, i can't even think about it.
THAT'S UGLY!!!!!!!!
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 04:54 PM where did you buy the phone bro???
slitchfield 18-10-2007, 05:09 PM - hissing through the headphones? Music sounds great to me on the default set
- scratch resistant? I'll try taking a nail and a screwdriver to it!!
- launching the N-Gage demos from landscape mode does nothing, they still run in portrait
- FIFA and Asphalt 3 demos both play well and are impressive. I'll do some videos in a podcast or Smartphone Show
- 1MB/s is fine for me - that's a million bytes per second, or roughly 10Mbps comm speed - isn't that good enough?
Steve

Unregistered 18-10-2007, 06:06 PM Has the sound quality of mp3's improved over the old model?
They say that the old model has very poor audio quality.
slitchfield 18-10-2007, 06:07 PM I should just mention that I've already found my first show stopping bug in the N95 8GB - I really, really hope they haven't released this build to manufacturing, otherwise some programmer's going to be really, really embarrassed. 8-)
slitchfield 18-10-2007, 06:09 PM No, the browser goes back to the point you left it. But then I seem to remember the N95 version doing the same. Might be something to do with your specific firmware?
Steve
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 06:15 PM any change here?
can you now access your network media files to play on the N95?
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 06:24 PM to slitchfield: are you aware of the hiss noise during music playback on the n95-1 (while having a good headset plugged in) and do you also hear it on the n95-3?
do you know about demanded paging beeing available for n95-1?
that would be the only way nokia could make up for the n95. This way the might not sell a many n95-3 but they would have a much happier users that would increase the nokia brand quality in peoples ears. This is especially important with the release of the iphone in europe. Besides the average n95 user that already has bought n95-1 might not bee crazy enough to buy the n95-3, i guess. So enabling demanded paging will gain both nokia and people!
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 07:12 PM Which software version has this unit? can you type *#0000# for us? thanks in advance
10.0.0.21 but date?

What is it then?
slitchfield 18-10-2007, 08:50 PM 'Refresh Music Library' is utterly absent (bug?), meaning that (AFAICS) there's no way to add music to this thing. Maybe I'm missing something - hopefully the Nokia N95 team will contact me tomorrow about this.....
BTW, firmware date is 29/9/07, since someone asked....
Unregistered 18-10-2007, 09:26 PM yeah they gotta sort that :O( I love the look of this phone plus seems to have everything
T-money 18-10-2007, 10:25 PM Awwe...now I never thought I would be so willing to give my mom my Nokia N95, but it is time. She will use everything but the internet really. The internet is my biggest issue with the previous Nokia N95. I get memory error issues constantly. Steve...you know you want to trade ole chap!
Unregistered 19-10-2007, 01:41 AM Hi Steve Litchfield, any chance of this n95 8g demand paging feature coming to the original n95?
Unregistered 19-10-2007, 01:53 AM This is why it rocks to be a phone-reviewer eh=P?......so much of ram..indeed...nokia has seen the weak point of the old one and improved it..i think n95 8gb is to stay as the flagship model for at least another year?...hahaha.....anyway..it still kicks ass to be reviewing a phone...wish i was one.=)
Unregistered 19-10-2007, 03:45 AM Hi Steve Litchfield, any chance of this n95 8g demand paging feature coming to the original n95?
Wrong question.
Any chance that Demand Paging feature will be on the N95 8GB?
Unregistered 19-10-2007, 04:07 AM Please refer post 34, the N95 8Gb *DOES* have Demand Paging.
Unregistered 19-10-2007, 07:46 AM Steve,
Now that the screen is flush do you think that the phone will be more susceptable to scratches??
Unregistered 19-10-2007, 07:57 AM [QUOTE=slitchfield;343281]'Refresh Music Library' is utterly absent (bug?), meaning that (AFAICS) there's no way to add music to this thing. QUOTE]
Hi
I don't know if i understood well but on a site showing a little demo of the phone. They refresh the music library to "see" recently downloaded podcast. Go on Music->Music Player then go on option of music or podcast and do "Refresh"... Is this option on the phone or not?
....waiting for N95 8gb, 26 days left...
Unregistered 19-10-2007, 08:04 AM Can you please post a video N95 8Gb playing some track... is it louder than original N95? how do you like it's music player, through headphones? compared to iPod, for example. thanx a lot from Russia=)

pricey!
slitchfield 19-10-2007, 09:38 AM Yes, phew, I've found the 'Refresh' option now, it's been moved one level back in the UI - HOW APPALLINGLY UNINTUITIVE - for existing S60 owners, at least, which will be 99% of purchasers. Why could they not have left the refresh option on the usual UI level as WELL?
Sigh. The N95 8GB is superb in many, many ways, but *some* aspects of the interface still come across as horrible kludges.
More in my upcoming review. Got to give it a few days of real world use before I pronounce though - I don't want to be a fan boy 8-)
Steve
deekster 19-10-2007, 10:57 AM Steve - I'm loving this thread. It's great to finally see a proper, professional and impartial review of this device.
I'm wondering where I can buy this device sim free online?
I got my existing N91 from OneDayMobile - but they seem to be offline now.
Does anyone know which reputable sites will be among the first to likely stock this item?
Deek.

Unregistered 19-10-2007, 11:08 AM JESUS !
ITS SO GOOD!!!!! :-))))))) Unbeliveable pritty and smart maschine !!!!
Pls do with it some pictures !
Davescot 19-10-2007, 11:09 AM Funny how Vodafones got them, but not available sim free anywhere. Try Expansys or Mobilefun, I've bought sim free from both those sites before and had good service.
Unregistered 19-10-2007, 11:59 AM ehm... hello? NO, USB 1.0 is by far not good enough! it may have been 10 years ago... it's utterly stupid to build a new device with built-in 8GB flash and have to wait abou 2.5hours to fill it with data!
ask yourself this: would ANY PERSON IN THE WORLD buy a 4 or 8GB USB-Stick that only has a crappy 1MB/s performance? current performance of *cheap* USB-Sticks are around 10-20MB/s since years!
i'll let you answer this yourself... (sorry for the rampling, but this really pisses me off - probaby even more so, as i actually (would) love the N95 otherwise! ;-)
viipottaja 19-10-2007, 12:03 PM My only gripe: there is no US version yet.. :( :). I guess I have to just be happy with my US N95 (which I don't have quite yet) Which is a fantastic multimedia computer (that mouthful is catching on..) too! :D
slitchfield 19-10-2007, 12:11 PM OK, the official tech specs
http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/N95_8GB
say USB 2.0 - I'm guessing that my old desktop (2004) has something to do with this. I'm not a PC expert, maybe the ports aren't 2.0 compatible. Anyway, please don't fixate on this until I've had a chance to try the N95 8GB with something more modern.
Steve
Bytales 19-10-2007, 12:11 PM All of this nice things u said about the ram and web processing capability are also tru for the E90, right ? Then i can't see why the excitement, we allready have "these" capability in a series 60 device ! Perhaps this excitement is because the N95 should have been capable of these feats in the 1st place, but it wasn't...

As with the N95, the 8GB it is capable of communication at full USB 2.0 speed. When you use the phone as a USB modem it creates a network connection at 470Mb/s
The problem is that the device has to receive and process the data on the USB and the writing to the flash memory may not be direct but could well be controlled and addressed by the processor
davesmith 19-10-2007, 12:51 PM I wonder if this 'demand paging' is the reason for the enhanced speed rather than the fact it has more RAM. If so, it is possible to give demand paging to orig N95 owners, to help them speed things up. I would love this... ( a guy can dream)

of course the USB interface is USB 2.0 *compatible* - thats not the point. the point is, as you state it correctly, that the subsystem is obviously nowhere nearly capable of deliverying the speed that the flash would be capable of (for example at least 4-6MB/s for a cheap 4GB MicroSD Card in a card reader). so, the endresult for me as a user is: if i buy the 8GB N95, i loose 4-6x the speed compared to being able to put my MicroSD card in a separate card reader for tranferring large files (movies, audio collections, etc), OR when using the device as a portable flash-disk (as with a USB stick). why nokia dont' just admit the real-life transfer-rate, rather than blinding users with a ridiculous statement like "it connects with 480MB/s"...
dhevans_6 19-10-2007, 01:08 PM Do we have any update on the expected launch date?
Can't be far off if you have a boxed production model?
Unregistered 19-10-2007, 01:15 PM I have read many post about N95 being full speed USB 2.0 which means USB 1.1 speeds. That is the reason why its locked at 1mb per second.
I'll be concerned if a benchmark says the 8gb transfer rate, internally to the N95 is 1mb/s......
So put a transfer benchmark on.
malerocks 19-10-2007, 02:03 PM Let go of the USB transfer rates guys! Honestly, how frequently will you be transferring huge amount of data to the phone? Maybe only when you buy the phone and are loading it up with your data. After that it will just be short bursts of data like 9 songs / 2- videos / a dozen pictures/ map of a city, etc. These should not take more than 15-20 secs or more in the mass storage mode.
Lets look at the possible improvements that have been brought in the phone. Does the camera take better pictures? How fast is it? How efficient is the combination of more RAM and Demand Paging? Is the music better - through wired or bluetooth on A2DP?
Steve, help...
Unregistered 19-10-2007, 02:21 PM Can we install applications in the flash drive? or is it limited to the internal memory?
Ratkat 19-10-2007, 03:15 PM I have no idea whether this covers sim-free handsets as well as contract, but the Nokia press office have stated that in the UK the N95-8GB will be exclusive to Vodafone until after xmas.
Unregistered 19-10-2007, 04:19 PM can n95 stand vertically or horizontally on the desk (without holding) ? if it doesn't then what's the purpose of camera self timer option for? and who the heck will buy tripod for camera phone.
Unregistered 19-10-2007, 06:03 PM Yes, the N95 8Gb *DOES* have Demand Paging, it boots in 20 seconds and ROM-based apps start much quicker and take less RAM when loaded.
It's a limited implementation of Demand Paging though, and I don't think 3rd party apps will benefit. I'll investigate more for my full review.
I thought about what you had meant but the answer could be right at the bottom this page
www . symbian . com / symbianos / demandpaging /
Symbian 9.3 has demand paging for the OS while 9.5 adds it for applications. But the N95-1 started out with 9.2 though ...

I don't like the sound of that, so probably not Sim free until next year then.

I rang Expansys and emailed Mobilefun earlier as well,
Expansys said it was exclusive to Vodafone at the moment and didn't know whether the sim free model was covered by that, but hopefully they would have some in December.
Mobilefun replied Thank you for your email. All the information we have is that it will be available at the end of the year.
So no, it's not looking good, I'll be gutted if they don't release the Sim Free until after Xmas.
The Vodafone exclusive only covers the UK though so hopefully I will be able to get one from abroad if it turns out to be correct.
Unregistered 19-10-2007, 07:15 PM According to a post on another forum the release date for the UK is October 26th. I just hope it isn't a Vodafone exclusive, which is unfair IMO if it is.

26th Oct is the date of the Vodafone release I believe, I agree it is bloody unfair on those wishing to buy sim free or on other networks.
Unregistered 19-10-2007, 10:04 PM i've bourght afew high-end phones from vodafone before on contract including the n95 none were ever locked. so no reason this will be.
Unregistered 20-10-2007, 04:02 PM i will buy it on a black market, so it will be SIM free for sure :)
Cuberob 21-10-2007, 09:40 PM What i'm still wondering is:
did they improve the microphone for video recording at all, i read your review of the normal n95 and you mentioned the microphone was of less quality than the nokia n93(i) so i was hoping they improved it to be of the same level as the n93(i)
slitchfield 22-10-2007, 02:28 PM But the N93i has TWO microphones, for stereo. And anyway, the N93 was miles better than both other devices. The N95 8GB is the same as on the original.
Davescot 22-10-2007, 06:21 PM Now that Vodafone has this phone available, has anyone got their hands on one yet?
Unregistered 22-10-2007, 09:28 PM I've already gotten a few scuffs on the N95 lens port doing nothing but putting it in empty pockets, on tables and in the provided pouch (oversized and clumsy, but when it needs to go in a bag, better than nothing). So far I haven't seen them affect the quality of the photos taken, so that's a good thing. My guess it unless the glass actually gets cloudy it won't affect photos much, as it is probably designed to focus well past the point where this glass is installed.
It's also important to point out that it *is* a lens port and not the actual Carl Zeiss lens itself. So even though it's annoying to see it have some minor scratches so soon, at least I know it is not the actual optics being touched but some protective glass that should be easily serviceable. In fact, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this extra layer of glass non-existant on the original N95? (I.e., once the lens cover was open, the cavity containing the lens was completely open?)
N95-1 22-10-2007, 10:38 PM this is a real-life example of what it means to have a phone with super-slow USB access to a huge onboard flash-memory, like the N81 or N95 8GB:
rcadden.jaiku.com/presence/15223237
(fyi: i'm not involved in that thread)
i also did a disk-benchmark on my N95-1 - i only got 650kbyte/s..!
this is about 10x less than if you put the memory-card into a card reader.
if someone is happy with that - so be it. i am not (>> Nokia).

Good to know that and YES, the current N95, once you open the shutter, the phone lens is exposed.
I can't wait for it to be available at my part of the world! :)

Hmm, I checked the link you gave. What he was doing is this:
So, I'm using the microUSB cord to a USB2.0 port on my Core Duo laptop with 1gb if RAM running XP. Syncing ~6gb of music through WMP with the N81 in Media Player mode.
I am no techie, but as far as I know, synchronising with WMP is indeed very slow, as it is not just transferring data from point A to B, but also doing some other synchronising activity (tag, playlist, cover, genre etc)? I think synchronising also converts the file format, thus the slow transfer rate? Even using the PC Suite to transfer music, unless your music is already in the correct format, it will take very long to transfer it as well.
Does it really have to do with the USB access to a huge onboard flash memory? Maybe not?
Drag and drop is always the easiest and the fastest IMHO.
MJJ_Sergey 25-10-2007, 07:14 AM Guys, this phone is available on Vodafone already, I've seen it yesterday, they just show it to me (only 1 phone was in the store). Don't even think, just buy it! It's the best Nokia ever made, the quality of headset is awsome! Thanks to NOKIA! I'm going to buy this phone today!
The best deals at the moment here:
P.S. Old silver N95 is useless compare to this device!
Unregistered 25-10-2007, 07:52 PM could u show images of the multimedia functions of the phone? the new software or looks
Unregistered 26-10-2007, 11:18 AM Hello!
I've been read this thread and I think nobody has asked about cammera flash...Is it Xenon flash? Or is it LED flash, like old N95?
I think this is an important issue, especially for night photos!
Thanks!
*Jelly Welly*
I so want this phone, ive been holding off on the N95 for the second generation...
*Crosses arms and sits in corner in a huff*
Unregistered 27-10-2007, 04:38 PM Hi mate,
congrats on purchasing nokia n95 8gb, is the phone comes with spiderman3 movie preloaded, i dont see any talks here abt nor comments from, if s, can u say how is the clarity and sound???
Vince 15 28-10-2007, 09:56 PM It's not completely clear for me if the hissing problem while listening mp3s is gone or it's still there. Can anyone pleeeeese give me a serious answare about that? Thanks!
SoundsGood 31-10-2007, 01:26 AM Hi guys,
1. How is the picture quality from the camera? Would it compete with, say, a Canon SD model?
2. Is glass used on the face of the phone, or some type of hard plastic? How "scratchable" is it?
3. Subjective question: anyone have a problem with the thickness of this phone? It *is* rather chunky.
Thanks.
Unregistered 06-11-2007, 06:08 PM DO NOT BUY IT.
I've had it 7 days and its broke already! There must be a problem with the screen as it cracked in my pocket! Honestly i didn't do anything that you wouldn't expect someone to do with a brand new phone.
Get an IPhone! Wish i had.
wocius 07-11-2007, 04:21 PM On my new N95-8GB, while there is no side to side wobble of the slider, there is a slight (say, 1/32" ?), but definitely noticeable, "play" in the slider in the up and down direction when closed or open. The play doesn't bother me (especially if it's normal ;) ), but perhaps related to the play is that the scroll key (d-pad) and some of the other control buttons creak a little when pressed, or even when I run my finger over them, sort of like cellophane crinkling. It's sort of like they are loose-fitting. Has anyone else noticed this?
I also notice that on light or white screens (such as the built-in Nokia Nseries 3 theme), the LED lamps illuminating the screen are clearly separately visible along the bottom of the screen, alternating with shadowy areas in between. This problem is much more subtle in the default black theme, but it's still visible. Anyone experiencing this?
Davescot 07-11-2007, 07:13 PM I have the same thing with the slider in the closed position, there's a little play there. When usin the D-pad with the slide shut you can feel the slider moving in.
Unregistered 11-11-2007, 05:58 AM Have been using the Nokia N95 8GB for a week, and can say that, everything considered, it hasn't disappointed me. It's fast and the menus are easy to use - plus they're configerable. Great large screen and everything is crisp and clear. Call quality is also excellent, with logging, diverting, barring etc and all the usual presets included.
Was concerned about the slider mechanism, but so far it seems solid and clicks up and down without any problems (and believe me, I've punished it as mercilessly as a politician in a brothel). Inevitably you'll get thumb smudges on the screen when you slide it up or down - but due to the light sensor, the smudges become invisible. Only when the phone is in standby and the screen goes black do you notice them.
The software is brilliant - especially Nokia Maps (which I use every day at work). Music player is also great with good bass levels and a few simple presets plus adjustable equaliser. The camera software is also good. One niggle is the contact list : it only allows you 2 phone numbers per contact (although there might be software out there that can enhance this).
But....and it's a big one. The 5mp camera hardware is not nearly as good as my last phone (Sharp 903..3.2mp). The pics, although sharp, look slightly unnatural and would need to be edited for colour saturation once downloaded. Also the video quality is just adequate, even at the highest resolution. If your main priority is snapping pics...then the K810i Sony Ericsson might be a better bet.
Having said that, I can't fault the phone as a "jack-of-all-trades" machine. It's like having a mini computer in your pocket and have ditched my Sharp as a phone (but want it back as a camera). DAMN!!
Overall
GOOD : great phone, mapping, software installed plus new software availability, music player, gaming, connectivity, internet speed (HSDPA).
NOT-SO-GOOD : Camera and video.
Although the camera is average for the price and by no means bad - it depends what you want in a phone. If you consider everything else this phone has to offer then GET IT NOW!!

Absolutely agree with your comments. Loving the phone.
BTW, do you get lost at work???? LOL
With regard to the phone contacts, you can either go 'add details' to add more numbers/addresses etc. Or use the PC Suite to edit it. I have 6 numbers, emails, addresses for just one friend with no problem.
Now just waiting for the new firmware for this phone so I can get rid of the Vodafone branding.
Unregistered 16-11-2007, 06:43 AM I am extremely dissappointed in the software supporting Nokia phones. I always buy Nokia phones because they are without question the best in many ways, but the support software is terrible .... with each phone upgrade, I go through a terrible time converting the contacts and other data in the old phone to be compatible with the new phone. And trying to upgrade to the N95 8GB from my 6230i is the worst time and trouble yet .... contact names in the 6230i are kept in a single data field. I compensated for that by entering the contact name, including company name in the order that suited my memory best. Most people, I recall by company, and more close associates, I keep by either first or last name depending on whatever ... but now with the N95 or even all the new Nokia phones for that matter, I am forced to enter fist, last and company names by individual field ..... the Nokia support software has, over the years lost the key critical ability to support conversion to an excel file that can be cleaned up and then reconfigured for the Nokia phone ..... and the N-series does not allow one to sort be company name ..... this is basic basic basic to any contact database ..... thousands of names and I can only recall a phone number by first and lats name ..... this is very very very stupid ..... I want to stay with Nokia and very stupidly, i keep waiting for the miracle when the phone software actually has a contact database compatible with how a human being conducts business ..... it is very very very frustrating ...... is there any hope in sight, or do I have to start using a different phone brand ....... after 12 years with Nokia phones, I do not want to change, but I have to if there will be no improvement .... last year I bought an E50 .... fabulous piece of hardware ...... but totally useless because of the contact database problem ...... yesterday, I bought an N95 8 GB and it too is totally useless ... and as with the E50, I will get rid if it .. either by return if the store will take it back, or by resale if I can find someone who does not care about the flawed, simple minded, totally useless contact database ... for me, this is a business tool that carries for me critical information that I need to do my work ..... it is not a toy as it seems to be with all the cute and clever little useless tricks that it can actually do very very well .....
Unregistered 12-01-2008, 03:29 PM Hi,
Every try I open the an image using the image gallery I get a message telling that the memory is full, and I should close some applications...
But I'm just using 29Mb of the telephon memory's, and just 1.4 GB of the big one.
So, what's the problem? is that a bug?
The software I'm using is v10.0.021.
Thank you!

Unregistered 04-02-2008, 10:45 PM i have just got this today, and i'm a little confused. I have 23 music tracks on it and its saying the memory is full? i've checked the memory and have something like 6000mb free. Please can you explain how i can get 150+cd's worth of music on here like stated?
Unregistered 23-04-2008, 12:59 AM Good point about the N80, 18 months and no scratches at all. The camera on the N95 8gb beats the arse of that one though. My granny's sight's not too good these days, I took photos of her newest great-grandchild and was able to show her them on her 42incher LCD, made me feel like the bogs dollocks.
Most games you can play "widescreen", the only one I've come across so far that doesn't is Millionaire. Mine came with Spiderman 3 pre-loaded, got it from 3. Gotta say, I love this phone, well, phone/mini-computer! Mind you, going by this phone, I can't wait till my contract's up in 18 months to see what choice we'll have then.
I thought I was excited when I got my N80. Nothing in comparison. Go Nokia!
Unregistered 05-10-2008, 01:53 PM Hi! I use my nokia n95 basic all the time to take photo's and just nip the memory card down to tesco's and print them out!! I am getting an 8gb n95 tomorrow and am wondering how I am going to print out the photo's I take if it has no memory card?
