View Full Version : A-GPS to hit the E90
slitchfield 22-09-2007, 08:26 AM As a Nokia E90 user, I was tipped off by a reliable but unnamed source that new firmware that includes Assisted GPS and (I think) Quickoffice 4.5 is due out in the first week of October. I wonder what else they'll throw in? There are a few bugs in Calendar and Web that I'm keen to see cleared...

That could be a bit annoying for those people that paid UKP15 (I think) for the Quick Office 4.5 upgrade. I hope the new FW also makes use of the vestigial Tab key :)
tutti 22-09-2007, 09:14 AM more important than assisted gps, i sometimes get a clicking sound when making calls (widely reported in the forums as a software issue)..
tutti 22-09-2007, 09:14 AM I bought it :(
jorge spain 22-09-2007, 09:26 AM They really need AGPS on this phone, but don't you think they need to change the GPS chip too? And put in a Sirf?
Chris Handley 22-09-2007, 10:41 AM Steve has previously said that the E90's chip takes longer for the GPS to lock-on than a Sirf3 chip, but seems to maintain the lock better than Sirf3 once it has. Since the assisted GPS will solve the longer lock-on problem, I imagine he'll think it's at least as good as (if not better than) a Sirf3 solution...
slitchfield 22-09-2007, 11:39 AM No, I never said it would hold a lock better than a SiRF III receiver. 8-)
It's great that Nokia used a low power GPS, despite the slow lock-on times, and it'll be even greater when Assisted GPS arrives.
Lock-on times with my E90 are around 1 minute if I've not moved from the last time I turned it on. Otherwise around 2 to 3 minutes. Longer if I'm moving while trying to lock (makes it harder for the GPS).
Re: tab key. It's not vestigial. It adds a tab character in my document and I use Chr+TAB to cycle through running apps all the time.
8-)
satsuma 22-09-2007, 11:55 AM Bluetooth switches off on mine sometimes if the phone has been switched off.
Also I would like to see some improvement in the BT handling between my BMW E92 and the Nokia E90 - the connection drops and reactivates randomly during calls
The A-GPS would be most welcome because GPS on mine has ben pretty useless since I got it.
I've tried it in various locations in the UK, Spain, Denmark, etc and the lock on times and holding onto a signal performance have been uniformly poor :frown:
DevilsRejection 22-09-2007, 02:10 PM The second this comes out I hope you share your results with the world! I may just buy this brick now.
Where is the antenna in the device by the way? Will the GPS be just as useful with the screen open or in one hand mode?
Stefan
slitchfield 22-09-2007, 03:18 PM The GPS antenna is near the spine, halfway up. The main GSM/3G aerial is near the top, at the back, if I remember my exploded E90 diagram properly.
Yep, I'll do a full firmware report as and when.....

stevenralte 22-09-2007, 08:49 PM It seem that i'll have to wait for the upgraded version... then i'll buy one... the Nokia E 90...
From other reviews, i heard that The Nokia E 90 Supports SDHC standard for cards larger than 2 gigs capacity... Will Using cards larger than 2 Gigs have any effect on the performance of the Phone in any possible way. What would that be ?
jmvdinis 23-09-2007, 12:53 AM I wonder if anyone can explain this...
I have never had problems on GPS fixing; I have never heard that strange noise when making call; My E90 never crashes;... I think I have a strange phone.
I am using a 4 Gb card and it is working so well that I am waiting for the 8 Gb card of Sandisk.
Steve, do you think that I should upgrade my firmware?
Thank you all.
andylarge2m 24-09-2007, 06:51 AM Steve what about the camera on the E90. Do you know if the upgrade will fix the nasty processing that the software does?
slitchfield 25-09-2007, 02:42 PM Er.... what nasty processing? Mine's fine.
Steve
Unregistered 27-10-2007, 04:05 PM Help! I have been trying to get the GPS working and have stood outside for over an hour trying to get a fix - it shows that I can see 4 or 5 satellites but never gets a fix. The dumb thing keeps saying that I am in Berlin (really NW London). I have the latest firmware so what can I do?
slitchfield 27-10-2007, 04:12 PM An hour????!!! Are the 5 satellite bars in black or unfilled?
Unregistered 28-10-2007, 11:57 AM The bars are unfilled.
Unregistered 28-10-2007, 12:31 PM I agree with Andy Large, there is some excessive image processing which gives blue edges - this is probably due to the JPEG compression and some sharpening in the software. Best to adjust the Sharpness to soft which will reduce the problem but hopefully they will release an improved version?
