Symbian 7 is here.

See http//www.allabouter6.com/cgi-bin/news/viewnews.cgi?id=EpEuEkuZEySGWoMuOU for some of the details.

What does this mean? The next stage of mobile phone OS is here (and we can see Stinger trailing out the back)..

and maybe a name change for the site...

allaboutsymbian.com perhaps?

Things really are getting interesting now. I don't know who will win. I know who I want to win, but as we can see in politics, presentation is more important than content - or so it would seem.

But with question marks over the Ericsson-Sony bed-sharing with Microsoft, Symbian would have to be fools to give up this head start - and there's no room to be complacent, look at Palm.

As for the name change, I think it would make it clearer what the site is about (since I must confess that (I must admit, to my shame - having been away from Symbian devices during my wilderness years with PocketPC - that seeing AllAboutER6 didn't strike me as a good site until I visited it of course and now I call in many times a day)..... you could even be naughty and rename this site something like http//www.SymbianThoughts.com /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif[ This Message was edited by TANKERx on 2002-02-19 1617 ]

Ericsson-Sony are already in bed with Symbian, I think they announced that in Jan. All the major players are. M$ have Sendo, HewlettPackard, and Texas Instruments, they are boned from the start.

But you know what will happen next....

...for some strange reason, all Synchronisation software (except for ActiveStink - which needs a SP1 on XP because it don't work /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif ) will stop working after Window$XP SP1.... and nobody will know why!

I kid you not, M$ has done something similar before (I think it was to kill Dr DOS) and this could well be what they will do again.[ This Message was edited by TANKERx on 2002-02-19 1907 ]

Hello,

I just bought a 9210. Was a Psion user b4. What prompt me to buy it was the excellent OS. Other thots were that M$ is playing dirty big time and the comments came from Bill Gates himself, I couldn't believe it at first now I can't stand them especially when they are going to screw you up in the future. See this link on Palm's comments on M$ antitrust trial =>

I think old Psion users should switch to Nokia or anything that runs Symbian soon. Don't ponder using our old faithful Psions make the switch NOW we're helping to fight off M$ BShit. If you don't M$ will run our lives.

I will register in this forum soon. Greetings from S'pore.

Oh, if I only could see devices coming out.... I remember saying this more than a year ago when 6.0 came, and after that there has been only one device, the 7650, which is a phone. Any PDA -style devices coming out, so I could start building those applications that do not fit into the phone category devices? If not, I'm not interested in developing just another tic tac toe game on phones...

If you hadn't noticed there is the 9210 which is the main base of this site running Symbian 6. And unless I am going crazy it's a PDA /phpBB/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Well yeah - very limited amount of memory, full of problems and bugs, no really support for networking from the app point of view (only sync and gsm data, which is far too expensive for real use). Should be at least bluetooth or GPRS data. What I meant is to have a PDA alone, not a phone, that I can connect to LAN/WLAN (through Bluetooth) for serious connectivity, and use BT for mobile connectivity with a GPRS (and later UMTS), if necessary. Something Psion should have done. Currently, iPaq's do this perfectly, so perhaps I just should switch the platform...

The problem here is that despite the upsides, when the 9210 was built/released both Bluetooth and GPRS were in their infancy, GPRS was not offered only HSCSD was. BlueTooth still isn't totaly finished, so I think Nokia had a good idea to hang back because if anything important was decided to be changed the 9210 would be an incompatible BlueTooth device.

I didn't mean to put down on 9210 as such, but just to show that yes, there is a ("a" meaning "one", 1) Symbian device out there, but even that is very limited device, not working properly - and the point really is - the only device. And the future devices are (to my knowledge) only phones, smaller than 9210, not PDAs. Yes, there will surely be 9210+ (with all these gizmos) but still no PDA only, and perhaps the only PDA type thing will be the 9210+ something.

Ah, I see what you are getting at, a straight PDA to rival the likes of the iPaq? I think we won't see any unless Psion change their mind and go back into the market for them, which is a shame as Psion had the best PDAs (a keyboard wow!), Hence unless any other mobile maker makes a phone/pda combo, or another manufatcurer steps into Psion's shoes, Nokia is all we've got.

Well, Nokia had better pull their finger out. Visit www.PocketPCThoughts.com and see that Micro$oft has already got its evangelists (MVPs) to say slag off the Symbian system.
