View Full Version : Z8 Questions and Answers
I now have a Z8 and having used it for a few days I am now reasonably familiar with it.
I'm currently writing the review (you'll probably see the first part on Monday).
However if there are specific questions you would like to see answered please post here and I'll do my best to enlighten you (others welcome too, there's a few knowledgeable people around).
Also check out Motorola Z8 mini site here - http://europe.motorola.com/uk/motorizrz8/ - there's some good stuff on there.
stuclark 22-06-2007, 11:59 PM A new one that's just come up - iTap or T9?
iTap.
For those that don't know iTap is Motorola's version of T9. Its similar to T9 in that it intelligently guesses word based on single key presses. However I've found it doesn't always get words correct if you type the whole thing in. You can lock in words as you go though using the up and down arrows. The good thing though is iTap has auto word completion that can save a lot of time.
appleseed 26-06-2007, 12:10 AM Do you have any information regarding the SAR value of the Z8?
stuclark 26-06-2007, 09:37 AM I'm prety sure Rafe doesn't know the SAR value yet (he doesn't have the full sales package for the phone).
Yep, sorry, I dont have the info on that yet.
bigbabylons 19-07-2007, 08:47 PM Hello all, have just got a Z8 and have unlocked it, added my old sim card and for the life of me can't figure out how to copy my phone numbers from SIM card to phone, any ideas?
zackymax 22-07-2007, 03:08 AM i have spent the last hour on the phone with tmobile trying to get tzones on my z8. we tried several different configurations but nothing worked. do you have any ideas?
Abbsta 22-07-2007, 11:08 AM Hello all, have just got a Z8 and have unlocked it, added my old sim card and for the life of me can't figure out how to copy my phone numbers from SIM card to phone, any ideas?
Go to Contacts > Options > View Category > SIM.
When you are in SIM view, Options > Markings > Mark all. It takes you back to SIM view with all entries marked. Options > Copy to Contacts. Done.
Then go into Options > View Category > All Phone Contacts to display all your contacts in the Phone instead of the SIM or keep it as it is if you wish to use SIM view.
bigbabylons 23-07-2007, 04:26 PM That really helped me out.
secretsquirrel 24-07-2007, 10:20 AM Am I able to run applications that run on S60 3rd edition on the Z8? I suspect the answer is no but I'm just getting my head around this Symbian malarkey and am weighing up the N95 vs Z8.

NO - the Z8 runs UIQ3.1, so S60 applications will NOT work!

The overall answer is no, S60 apps will not run on UIQ phones (SE or Moto). Some JAVA apps, without any S60 specific code, may run OK.
Remember though, many S60 apps have already been converted to UIQ and the Z8 (like the recent Quick Office and Docs To Go announcements), and more are coming soon, so a lot of the popular titles will be available.
Also, quite a few of the older S60 apps will not run on the newer S60 3rd Edition, and they are having to be converted too.
secretsquirrel 24-07-2007, 12:19 PM There is an application called Private Call & SMS guard which I am particularly interested in. It hides all texts and call history from numbers that are specified on a list, until a password is entered. Ideal for people who might be texting someone that they shouldn't. It looks like a really useful appln - anyone know of anything similar on the Z8? The spec for the Z8 mentions something about switching between SIMs so does it support 2 SIM cards simultaneously?
RuaryMC 31-07-2007, 03:08 PM I've had my Z8 for about a week now and I've still got no idea how to work the memory card. I've put it and tried changing the settings to save to memory card but nothing appears to work! It's getting very frustrating as I can't have any music on it or take pictures. Any information is very much appreciated!
euphoriauk 07-08-2007, 03:30 PM Ensure the memory card is formatted to FAT format (best to format in the phone itself).
Then ensure your folder layout is:
media files>image for all image files
media files>audio>music for all music files
media files>audio>ringtones for all ringtone files
media files>video for all video files
Hope that helps!
:)
fubar3803 07-08-2007, 07:27 PM Hey guys,
Dont know if the z8 is supposed to do this, When i switch the phone on it asks for my pin, i leave it for a few seconds then it proceeds to boot to the home screen, from there i can access all my txt's and contact info etc etc all without entering a pin code! The only thing i cant do is make a call as it prompts me for pin.
Surely this cant be normal as most other device's dont let you get anywhere near personal info without the pin!-Is this a security breech in moto's os maybe?
Many thanks
euphoriauk 22-08-2007, 12:19 PM Simple. Format card in Z8 and ensure that you have the folder structure:
media files\audio
media files\audio\ringtones
media files\audio\music
media files\image
media files\video
media files\document
media files\other
Then save your files in the appropriate folder and they will be seen by the relevant application e.g. media gallery

I have tried everything. I have a phone that is for O2 network, but is not SIM locked. I am using it in Serbia. I have asked the operator to send me configuration message, but anytime I start browser I am getting the message "Can not open 02.paymonthly.uk." or something like that. I deleted all O2 accounts... I have no idea what is happening. Can someone help me?

Go here:
https://hellomoto.wdsglobal.com/site/phonefirst
Select the Z8, your country as Serbia, etc, etc.
Enter the pin and follow the onscreen instructions. Make sure to set whatever new account settings you get as your Preferred account.
Good luck, and let us know how you get on!

Best way is to install the newest SwissManager, and use the Task screen to end the applications (using the "C" button). Works beautifully. You can also set it to auto-cleanup applications after idle for a certain amount of minutes, but I found that doing this interferes with media playback (I'm assuming it tries to end the media player while it's playing and something hangs there)

Patricko 29-09-2007, 10:36 PM I also got one problem.
I want to change my Phone name in Bluetooth, but when I go to menu and back is default name Z8 Phone !
And I cant do anything with that, its still the same name :/ I tried everything....

I just tried changing the name, and it worked. Whether I clicked Back or Options -> Done, the name was modified. No problem for me...

Patricko 30-09-2007, 10:39 PM I have no idea what can be the problem with that Bluetooth :/
I also want to ask about free RAM. Now I have about 33% free RAM.
Is this is normal ? Because I think its not enough. And I have all task closed.
Only default. Also when I do something, and then close tasks (not always, but sometimes), free RAM is going down. I need to restart phone to make it like before ? On begining I had about 44% free RAM, now 33% . Why ?
Only tasks what I have are that 5 default tasks wich I cant close.
And whats the diffrence between SwissManager Free and Pro ?
Pro has some special functions ?
Hairbear1954 05-10-2007, 06:36 PM New to the Z8 this week and have found my way around pretty well. I am actually coming from the Z6, but wanted the extra features here.
Does anyone have the steps written down to set up the email/web/media net/mms for AT&T?
Thanks for the help!!

chadbulloch 02-05-2008, 04:51 PM hi there.
i am looking for any advice regarding themes on the phone (motorola z8)
i got really bored of the 2 standard themes so i found a few on the internet and downloaded them and saved them onto the phone, now this is where the problem comes in, i have absolutely no idea how to get the phone to recognise the skin/theme. when i go into the thems in the settings it still only displayed the two standard ones and if i try save the skin in an alternate location, it doesnt seem to make a difference
please any help wud be greatly appreciated
D4n958GB 02-05-2008, 05:09 PM I thought that there is a newer version of this phone, z11? Or am I seeing things lol??
patrixl 05-06-2008, 11:38 PM mattpoon: I don't think there's any other way to end applications
chadbulloch: go in the file manager and "view" the themes, it'll offer you an option to install them.
d4n958GB: Z10 came out recently, at least in the UK.

slamm 03-11-2008, 03:06 PM Hey everyone. I just registered on this site a few minutes ago and thought I'd try to make a contribution. I know a few of the questions in this thread are really old by now but I noticed some of them are still unanswered. Hopefully I can provide some answers as I've been around the block and back with my z8.
...Dont know if the z8 is supposed to do this, When i switch the phone on it asks for my pin, i leave it for a few seconds then it proceeds to boot to the home screen, from there i can access all my txt's and contact info etc etc all without entering a pin code! Surely this cant be normal as most other device's dont let you get anywhere near personal info without the pin!-Is this a security breech in moto's os maybe?
This is not a security issue. A sim pin code isn't actually meant to block a phone, merely restrict access to the sim. All the other phones have it wrong lol. The Nokia 6085 works the same. Without a pin you can't access any network functions like sending sms, making calls, using internet, access info stored on sim like contacts and sms etc. but you can access the phone itself.
...is it true you cannot put a pin code or a password on to it to stop someone from reading your messages. I had before that a v3i and this was no problem ,you could also put a password onto v anything on the phone.I look forward to hear from you.
Unfortunately this is true. And its the feature I miss most about my last phone. However, because this phone runs an OS there are various applications that can be integrated to address this issue with minimal hassle, unlike the java based v3i.
...I want to change my Phone name in Bluetooth, but when I go to menu and back is default name Z8 Phone !
And I cant do anything with that, its still the same name :/ I tried everything....
There's a glitch with certain firmwares that require you to turn your bluetooth on before you can change the name. You probably have one of these firmwares. So turn your bluetooth on, change the name, save the settings and turn your bluetooth off again. The name should stick now.
There are no new firmwares currently available for the Z8
New firmware was released subsequent to this post.
...i got really bored of the 2 standard themes so i found a few on the internet and downloaded them and saved them onto the phone, now this is where the problem comes in, i have absolutely no idea how to get the phone to recognise the skin/theme. when i go into the thems in the settings it still only displayed the two standard ones and if i try save the skin in an alternate location, it doesnt seem to make a difference
Simply copying the theme to your phone won't do anything. You have to install them.
Locate the theme file on your phone or memory card, click view, options, install (or at least I think those are the option names lol, typing this off the top of my head). The themes should appear in the themes list now and you can use them in setting up your new profiles.
I thought that there is a newer version of this phone, z11? Or am I seeing things lol??
Its the z10 lol. Its uiq 3.2 on top of symbian 9.2. The planned semi touch screen 5mp uiq 3.3 z12 is likely to be scrapped with the death of uiq and motorolas new interest in android.
Sorry for the long post lol. I didnt wanna spam and post lots of replies. Hope I helped a bit.
