Is it possible to start an internet connection without haviong to start Internet or Messenger?

In theory you could dial out to an ISP on the front panel of your phone, but how you'd get the phone to connect is a different matter. What are you attempting to do mate?

What I want to do is establish a Telnet session via the company RAS server. I know that the Telnet application will call up the connection dialogue, but sometimes, I want to be able to start the connection before the application (don't ask why).

Can you not use the dialler app to establist a connection with the server before running telnet. Though it would seem more sensible to dial out from telnet as this would save on valuable memory as I see it.
