Any ideas for a utility to keep the N95 LED on, for use as an emergency torch?

No, that's for the backlight!! I'm talking about the camera LED.

i just noticed that the english description is a little out of date, the german text says that it's also possible to turn on the led on certain devices (n80) since version 0.04.
maybe worth a try...

S60SpotOn keeps your display backlight permanently on.

If your smartphone (e.g. Nokia N80, N90) supports a camera-flash, you will be able to turn it on/off too (since v0.04).

However on the N95 it only turns the red flash on.

I second bluestar - I have Ntorch installed on N95 and works fine. Not that bright though :s
