A Zune Phone , Another Bad Dream For Apple

A recent FCC filing by Microsoft for a "consumer broadband access and networking device" has sparked off a new wave of speculation about the possibility of a Zune phone being launched sometime soon.

According to TechCrunch:

the odds that Microsoft (MSFT) is working on a phone version of its Zune multimedia player are high. The phone may be set up to run on a 4G network, perhaps the one that Sprint (S) is building.

When the Zune was announced last year, Microsoft did mention that there could be such a device in the Zune family, but did not speak specifics.

Various features have been associated with the product, including the ability to connect to the Xbox Live Marketplace and the Xbox 360 console, the possibility of the phone not using the Windows Mobile operating system, instead operating on the Zune UI, and even WiMAX support.

The FCC filing doesn't directly indicate that it will be a Zune family product, however, Apple's recent iPhone announcement leads the thought that Microsoft might be looking at "being there too."

There are also rumors that the phone will be launched as early as March (gasp!) or at least by May or June, to compete with the iPhone before it becomes the iPod of mobile phones.

Zune Gets 2 Percent Market Share?

According to data released by NPD Groups

With the iPod still holding over 62% of the market, Microsoft's attempt to become the leader in the digital music space is looking to be an uphill battle, and it's a long time competion with each other.

As the iPod has dominated the market for a long time , and supported by many consumers ,and other companies. The iPod may dominate the "standalone" MP3 player market.

However, if you take all devices that can store megabytes or gigabytes of songs and play them, such as many mobile phones, then it isn't that big.

Most mobile phone manufacturers with devices that have MP3 players probably outsell in one year the combined total of all iPods sold for as long as Apple has been making them.

I also remember reading survey data that in Japan alone more music tracks are sold yearly (in that one, single country) for mobile phones than iTunes sells world-wide in all countries combined.

(That doesn't, of course, mean that all that have an MP3 capable phone user it as their music player, but I'm quite sure that many do; only one device to carry around and keep charged).
