View Full Version : The Nokia N95 unboxed, previewed and demo-ed!
slitchfield 24-01-2007, 10:00 PM OK, listen up. Rafe's been trying out the brand, spanking new Nokia N95 über-converged smartphone. In his comprehensive preview, he unboxes it, photographs it, tests the 5 megapixel camera, writes about the hardware design and demonstrates many of its new software features in text and pictures.
Read on in the full article (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/4810_The_Nokia_N95_unboxed_previewe.php).
Unregistered 24-01-2007, 10:41 PM Hi,
Can you see if the builtin GPS works well with TomTom/Route66/other 3rd party GPS software?
BigRedBall 25-01-2007, 12:33 AM Any chance of a sizea comparison to the E61?
krisse 25-01-2007, 12:34 AM Look at this photo, you can count the bubbles.

Surely this is the beginning of the end for the separate camera?
Once even cheap phones come with a camera as good as this, why would any non-professional get a separate one?
viipottaja 25-01-2007, 01:11 AM I don't I've ever been this jealous.. I doubt I can resist for long, and will buy this the first trip I go on to Europe after it comes out there..
Unregistered 25-01-2007, 02:18 AM The N95 is going to be amazing! If your going to get one check out the N95 forums (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=91)
jay_cee 25-01-2007, 03:02 AM How is the battery life?
S60_Freak 25-01-2007, 04:56 AM N95 is the coolest device from Nokia in recent times with all-in-one category device and power packed features.
FYI, the 3.5mm audio jack is a multi-purpose port, not only for Audio but the same is used for TV-Out functionality as well !!
Is it already in shops?? What is the price tag?
2more 25-01-2007, 05:55 AM They definitely MUST do something with color rendering and remove this awful PINK SHADE from the pictures!!!
Unregistered 25-01-2007, 06:35 AM hi there, sweet device you got there and great preview too. this thing is the stuff i dream about every night can't wait to get one.
i am just curious about that headset adapter. the pictures do not show the pin connection clearly and i have been racking my brain as to how the microphone and other functions on that remote works. my question is how many connection points are on that adapter on the 3.5mm end that goes into the phone??
Unregistered 25-01-2007, 06:44 AM Just like to ask whether the LCD screen is protected by a hard plastic cover.
krisse 25-01-2007, 06:53 AM "Just like to ask whether the LCD screen is protected by a hard plastic cover."
Aren't all phone LCDs protected by a hard plastic cover? I've never seen an exposed screen on any portable device.
natanlevine 25-01-2007, 06:54 AM How easy is it to use the multimedia keys to change music tracks while doing something else on the device? Does sliding them out always change orientation and open music player? If this is the case isn't this a real bother if all i want to do is change tracks. Also isn't it hard to use music player if i can't access keypad to search songs?
Unregistered 25-01-2007, 07:19 AM Can you use N95 as an external bluetooth GPS reveicer? This would be great if you use a navigation software on your laptop/tablet/whatever..
cliboub 25-01-2007, 07:36 AM Thanks for this exclusive preview.
I'm really looking forward to see a video comparison between N93 & N95.
Richa 25-01-2007, 08:04 AM Hello,
What's the firmware of your N95? Just curious...
How is the battery life?
Too early to say really. I suspect its going to be a charge at the end of the day device if you use it a fair bit.
N95 is the coolest device from Nokia in recent times with all-in-one category device and power packed features.

Its not in the shops yet. Should come out in March (may a bit before)... and yes you're right about TV-Out - a very cool feature I didn;t mention in the preview.
They definitely MUST do something with color rendering and remove this awful PINK SHADE from the pictures!!!
Bear in mind this is an early device. The hardware maybe finalised, but the software may not. There's defintely room for improvement in the camera, but I think that can be said of every cameraphone I've used.
How easy is it to use the multimedia keys to change music tracks while doing something else on the device? Does sliding them out always change orientation and open music player? If this is the case isn't this a real bother if all i want to do is change tracks. Also isn't it hard to use music player if i can't access keypad to search songs?
Sliding them out does not start the music player. The first press will start music player if its not already open (it jumps to the multimedia launcher when the controls are opened, when you close the controls it goes back to where you were). Otherwise the keys just control the music like a remote would (the track information and control key press pop up in a little box).
Just like to ask whether the LCD screen is protected by a hard plastic cover.
Yes it does, similar to other phone.
Can you use N95 as an external bluetooth GPS reveicer? This would be great if you use a navigation software on your laptop/tablet/whatever..
I haven't looked into this, but I don't think so.
Thanks for this exclusive preview.
I'm really looking forward to see a video comparison between N93 & N95.
Will do my best to get something up later.
I'll keep answering question so feel free to keep asking.
Unregistered 25-01-2007, 08:34 AM so how about the iPhone?
I think they're not geared towards the same goal to "revolutionize" phone. They will cross different paths, and will contend to each other who will really "revolutionize" smartphones. I strongly believe with the N95, and keypad still rocks!!! hehehe, so who cares if they have iPhone which is by Apple?
It really is an easy choice for fanboys, like me.
Unregistered 25-01-2007, 10:02 AM The N95 is a peice of equipment that everyone would like to own. Waiting for getting my hands on it.
Does anyone know when is it coming to India?
faquick 25-01-2007, 10:43 AM Rafe,
please do a deep test about battery life, it is the main issue I think we could have with this phone (like with N80)
Unregistered 25-01-2007, 11:15 AM Hi,
i would like to know about GPS does it matter
if i have bought N95 in Europe, and could i use it in America
and vic versa... oh and could you post a list of countries included
in GPS service. And will be possible to download country maps
or are all included...
sorry for so long question, this bothers me the most...
cos I'll have 3 devices in one, mobile phone, 5MP camera and
GPS device in one...
thanks in advance
Unregistered 25-01-2007, 11:48 AM Hi,

Unregistered 25-01-2007, 03:03 PM Hey, thanks for the preview, my mouth is watering!
I'd much like to see a photo comparison of the N95 vs. other sliding nokias, such as the 6280 or the N80 (not sure if that's what it's called though!).
Also, as for maps, can we assume they will be preloaded depending on country of purchase? Or will it contain say, mainland Europe? Or are the maps downloadable?
Looking forward to buying this!!
kmrdeva 25-01-2007, 03:04 PM Doesn't the N95 come with a 2.6 inch screen and not 2.4 inch as mentioned in the preview?
mudenza 25-01-2007, 03:09 PM Rafe,

krisse 25-01-2007, 03:50 PM "anyone know if this would work on verizon wireless? im sick of using those crappy verizon phones"
Yes, it should work as it's a quad-band phone. You just need to insert a Verizon SIM card in the phone.
However, if Verizon don't offer it as part of a plan then you'll have to buy the phone yourself. American phone service providers have a tendency to hide the true cost of the actual phones and make customers pay for the phone in installments through very high monthly service fees.
"Did you read the article? It clearly says 150MB."
No, that's the internal flash memory which is used for storing data. RAM is the working memory required for running lots of programmes at once. Mobile phone makers hardly ever tell anyone how much RAM their models have, for some weird reason.
Unregistered 25-01-2007, 04:06 PM Verizon uses the CDMA Network. This phone is a GSM Phone. Cingular(AT&T) and T-Mobile only.

Way to know the difference between RAM and internal memory. I know it has 150mb internal memory. I want to know how much RAM the device has.
If you don't know how to find out, install Tasky or the trial of Best TaskMan and run them on a clean boot of the phone.

The N95 runs the same processor of the N93, which is really fast. If you search on YouTube for videos of the N95, you can get an idea for how fast it is.
ParadiseFH 25-01-2007, 06:29 PM Will Nokia be upgrading the phone's firmware so it can handle the 4gb microsd cards and the newer 8b microsd cards?
This is a killer for me if they have no plans to do so.
If you talk about microSDHC cards, no way. Is software, but also hardware. N95 should reach the limit with 2Gb cards. Only if appears ordinary microSD great than 2Gb:con?

That's actually not really true. I've been reading that the only difference between regular SD cards and what is called SDHC cards is the file format used. It's FAT16 for regular SD and FAT32 for SDHC. There are no physical/hardware differences between the two types of cards so software support for FAT32 is really the only thing needed to make the N95 compatible with the SDHC cards. I tried to post a link to a Brighthand article that explains this but I'm not allowed to post links so just do a Google search for this string:
New High-Capacity SD Format. The first result of that search is the Brighthand article I wanted to post the link to.
So, do we know yet the amount of free RAM on the N95? That's the real question of the day....
TazUk 25-01-2007, 07:56 PM Damn you and your previews lol.
Now I've got to spend 2 months green with envy until it's available from O2......
jonnybruha 25-01-2007, 08:01 PM On howardforums.com someone posted an image of Handy Taskman running on the N95 and it reported 17.7mb available at startup. :frown:
slitchfield 25-01-2007, 08:19 PM The N95 has just under 20MB of free RAM after bootup. About what I'd expect, given playing with the likes of the N93i.

If is like that, why the cards are not back compatible? Is enough format on FAT 16!
But, N-Gage, from 2003, accept MMC card of 4Gb... which is the system format of that MMC cards?
Unregistered 25-01-2007, 09:20 PM Very nice first piece of a review. I took a long and hard look at the N95 at CES and came away very impressed. It would be a heck of a break from my Treo, but I think that I could manage ;)
I notice that the photos have a purple/blue hue to them. Me not being a Nokia phone guy (really, the N95 is the first Nokia ever that I've WANTED), is this something that a manual white balance or firmware update could fix?
Looking forward to the rest of the review, as well as the US non-bastardized version :)

xtemujin 26-01-2007, 01:26 PM I would like to ask about the GPS component.
1) Is it possible to synchronise the time on the N95 with the GPS clock ?
2) Is it possible to tag the GPS coordinates to the photos taken by the N95 automatically ?
My third question, playing youtube videos from the youtube website, fact or fiction.
TIA.

I read it as 150MB is the available RAM on the flashdrive, not the available working memory which the poster was after (and which I'd like to know as well)

It is not possible to format 4GB card with FAT16 since FAT16 only supports volumes of up to 2GB due to memory addressing limitations. If N-Gage works with 4GB MMC cards it can only mean that those cards are formatted with FAT32 and that N-Gage supports FAT32, which only means that Nokia has included FAT32 support in at least one of their devices. There really is no reason not to include this capability in their current devices so let's hope that they do. It really is in their interest as 4GB micro SDHC cards are about to become available and the extra storage would make Nokia phones more competitive with standalone MP3 players and the iPhone.
And now to reinstate The Most Important Question about N95:
How much RAM does it have after a clean bootup?
A clear and definitive answer to that question will be greatly appreciated.
I really find it amazing how difficult it is to obtain an answer to this question about any of the S60 devices - it really is like pulling teeth for some reason.

Yes! Thank you somebody finally agrees with me and has the same understanding about the issue I do.
I'm really not in the mood to shell out 700 bucks to be stuck at 2gb. I'd much rather shell out 700 bucks and have 8tb (yes that's a "t") as a max cap.

You pay once for the navigation upgrade. You can pay for 7 days, 30 days, 3 months or a year.
After that you just download automatically. All the routing is free, its just the voice guidance (turn by turn) that costs
Unregistered 26-01-2007, 04:24 PM hey Rafe, tx a lot for answering my question about the headset adapter. i have a new questions.
you said the start up RAM is 19.8MB. i kinda read somewhere that you could set part of the 160MB internal memory towards being used as RAM. it is supposed to be somewhere in the settings of the N95. unfortunately i lost the link to the site. i think it was a chinese website so this might have been a translation error. could you confirm this? thx a lot.

It would be great if that was possible. That would solve any multitasking problems. However, it is very very unlikely that Nokia has made that possible.
Ratkat 26-01-2007, 06:16 PM So the N95 has under 20mb ram available at startup, once again we are likely to be plagued with the same 'out of memory' problems that have been the bugbear of the S60V3 and UIQ 3 devices since they were released.
If the N80 runs out of memory zooming past 50% on a 3mp image what chance has the N95 have of zooming in on a 5mp image.
The new Nokia Web Browser 2 has more features and will most likely use more memory, so as with the earlier devices struggle with large web pages.
What is the point of having large amounts of storage memory (160mb)and bugger all ram, for a multi tasking device it doesn't make any sense. Why couldn't Nokia have increased the memory to say 40mb or even the 30mb that the N70 had at startup.
I was and still am looking forward to the N95 to replace my N80, but if it ends up with the same out of memory bugs as most S60V3 devices I fear that my days of using Symbian devices may be numbered.
...I'm really not in the mood to shell out 700 bucks to be stuck at 2gb...

Unregistered 27-01-2007, 02:48 PM ...see any reason why anyone would get a separate navigation software, since you get the free maps application with the N95. Well, ok, if you really push me this could be the reason...
1. You live in an area where detailed maps are not supported by the Nokia Maps application.
And in theory these two as well...
(2.)you think that the upgrade price for voice-guided navigation incl. automatic re-routing and turning arrows is too high (however I am certain that buying e.g. Route 66 software would be more expensive than upgrading your N95 with Navi-capabilities...
(3.) You fancy onboard solutions and not having to download the detailed maps. I know I prefer to download the maps from the back-end server - always fresh - and I also have a flat rate subscription so dont need to worry about data charges.
I have tried the N95 for a while, and I think that the maps application is doing the job fairly well at least where I move about...
Good review Rafe!

kanzlr 29-01-2007, 12:46 PM the quality still doesnt compare to a real digicam.
remember this is in good light. as soon as the lightlevel drops, you will notice huge noise in the image. the reason is simply the very small sensor combined with the high MP count.
and this is mostly physics. a small sensor will never be able to catch as much light as a bigger sensor, hence you have to boost the signal more to have a well exposed image. but when you boost the signal, you also boost noise.
so no, if the sensor size will stay that small (and it has to, because bigger sensor = bigger lens = bigger phone), those phonecams will only be able to excel in good to very good lighting situations.
Unregistered 29-01-2007, 02:39 PM Is the positioning application included with Maps or do you have to pay for it> Is it included in the S60 3rd edition? Thanks.

Unregistered 31-01-2007, 03:07 AM Didn't Nokia get the memo? Thin is in. This thing is so big, ugly and bulky, it'll weigh your pants down, that is, if it fits in your pocket. DVD-like video? Don't make me laugh. I have a Sony SR100 Handycam, that is DVD quality. It's high noon on Nokia's time in the sun as a dominant handset manufacturer. merovinqian 04-02-2007, 01:39 PM Can I ask you if u have to have headset connected to the N95 when you want to listen to the radio?
I'm sure the wired headset will still act as the FM radio receiver's antenna/aerial in the N95 like in any previous phone with FM radio from Nokia.
In other words, you'll still need it.

I started a N95 community, if your going to get one please check it out and let me know what you think. Why? As in:
Why did you start a new one? What's wrong with this one? What's there that gives enough reson to go (besides probably advertising banners that make you money, I suspect, even if I haven't been there)? Your intentions may be good and unselfish for all I know, but just saying you started a new "community" (whatever that really means, if there's nobody else there yet) and asking people to come/go is not enough reason in my opinion.

Is the positioning application included with Maps or do you have to pay for it> Is it included in the S60 3rd edition? Thanks.
Positioning is a standard part of S60 3rd Edition FP1. It is a separate app to Maps.

Didn't Nokia get the memo? Thin margin over spec'd toys labelled as mobile computing devices...what an ego.
I know this is troll bait, but never mind - good excuse to make some points. The N95 is actually lighter than some thing phones. Its really not very big as you can see from some of the comparisons photos. Its a brave call to say Nokia time is over and frankly I think you're completely wrong (you'd have to put an argument together across their entire range). Nokia do face increased competition from Sony Ericsson in the high end and Motorola in entry levels phone, but they're still in a uniquely powerful position in terms of economies of scales and production abilities. These phones aren't for everyone but a lot of the technology in here will become mainstream in 5 years time.
A lot of people miss the poitn about converged devices - yes they are most often not as good as the stand alone device - but for the majority of people they will be good enough, have the benefit of being a single devices and much less costly than buying all the device seperately.
Can I ask you if u have to have headset connected to the N95 when you want to listen to the radio?
Yes you do. It acts as the aerial.

Unregistered 15-02-2007, 11:14 PM I sent Nokia a nice e-mail btw:
Since my mobile was stolen before Christmas, I've been meaning to sort out a new one.
Purely for the means of essential communication, and for photography. So I did some
research and decided to wait for the Nokia N95 to come out.
But Now I think waiting might just have been a complete dissapointment. I just hope that
"€550 (US$700)" is a joke, and not confirmed. If this is the case, I doubt my parents
will be buying it. Infact, when I come to get a job towards the end of this year, I
doubt I would buy it either.
Putting this into perspective. Nokia's phone prices have gone through the roof. Look at
the Sony K800i, which has similar features to the N73, yet, the nokia is £100 more.
Some basic economics, if your price drops, demand will rise. Hopefully Nokia will get
some sense knocked into them sooner, before they're left out in the cold. To put some
expression into this e-mail, I hope Nokia's sales cripple.
I know it's likely that you probably won't read this, and if you do, you probably won't
do anything about it, or even attempt to. But if you can be arsed, get off your office
chair, print this off, and locate it up your manager's or director's arsehole, along
with their summer pricing guide.
Thankyou for reading, and please send a complimentry N95 to the attached address for my
trouble.
Yours sincerely,
Pissed-off student
Chris
Ps. And you're missing "Windows Vista" from your OS dropdown, aswell as "virgin mobile"
from your operator dropdown.

Unregistered 04-03-2007, 12:07 AM This question has already been asked!! I'm just asking again in the hope that the more people who ask the more likely an answer will be forthcoming!
Please tell us if you can use the inbuilt GPS with 3rd party navigation software, eg. TomTom. For me this would be the killer app. I find the idea of having to pay extra for turn by turn directions is like a slap in the face with a wet fish - no way!
Thanks for your excellent review. The N95 looks fantastic, being able to use the inbuilt GPS with TomTom would clinch the deal for me, if I can't I will be very dissapointed and might have to wait for the iPhone (and buy a seperate TomTom!)
Orson.
There is nothing in the N95 that prevents application developers from not using the built-in GPS, so all you need is to wait for developers of such apps like TomTom to update their apps to use the built-in GPS (instead of a separate Bluetooth GPS unit).

He's right. Thin is in.
Thin is in in the US where uninformed consumers are confused by flashing images of a slick marketing campaign. Thin is in because we're told the motorazr is the coolest thing ever by some dude drinking a light beer at the bar. Thin is in because we don't know any better. Thin is in because all we want a cellphone to do is make a phone call, play a couple of MP3s with poor quality and take images just barely passable for email and web purposes. Thin is in because that's all we think a cellphone can do.
Thin is in? Don't make me laugh.
The N95 isn't big nor bulky nor ugly. You can take your thin phone and shove it in your great pockets with your handycam, your PDA and your iPod.
"High noon". Priceless.

Unregistered 25-03-2007, 11:47 AM The N95 seems very interesting to me especially the VOIP funtionality. You mentioned that it will automatically make a voip call when connected to a wlan but I was wondering how it works for receiving calls? (I'm new to this could you explain how it works) Also if I want to use skype with such a program as fring, do I need to reconnect everytime I connect to a Wlan or can I/need I always have the program running? And further would it work with skype in/out?
Thanks in advance for some answers =)

I understand that. I knew one of Leica plants, so I assume that Carl Zeiss plants are more or less the same. Is high tech production, with White Rooms - clean, clean, to achieve high tech lens production.
After that, the final product - photo production - with the use of Zeiss brand is so... so....
I got your point!

Unregistered 10-04-2007, 04:06 PM Got caught by the hype around the phone, couldn't decide if it was the camera or mp3 player of gps that excited me the most. The only one to come out with flying colours is the camera.
Despite the hype of the other features none, including the GPS, deliver against the hype. For a considerable sum of money you are buying a device hacked together from second rate components. They look sexy and glossy from the outside but inside they are second rate. Take the radio, you need to find out the numbers of non-commercial stations to tune in. There is no auto tune. On it's own not a sufficiently niggling reason to return the N95 for a full refund. When looked at from the perspective of an media player that adds it's own hiss to everything it starts to get more niggling. Compound this with a GPS that takes 20 - 30 minutes to position you you see where this is drifting.
The ultimate niggle is the constant buzz on the phone.
I have given up and got a full refund for the returned N95. It was "Great hype, shame about the reality" try again Nokia, third time lucky.
Unregistered 13-04-2007, 08:10 PM Hi a quick question:

towato-san 17-04-2007, 07:21 PM >what about the call/voice quality?
The only people who would go for this phone are sad pathetic losers who would not be calling people in real life, so the call quality is not a major selling point of this handset.

Unregistered 20-04-2007, 12:15 AM Those sample pictures are terrible, the JPG architecturing is evident! sure the pictures are large, but the resolution is terrible, the tree and bubble pictures are evident of this, pixilation clear along all edges.
The K800i 3mp Camera still takes far superior pictures. Once again Nokia has made a device which is jack of all trades, master of none.
Like the N80 and N93 I'm sure this will suffer the same terrible software conflicts and lack of RAM.
The UK stockists I have spoke to have, like the N93, no hopes for success of this device.
Shame, Nokia once lead the industry

Looks great. The only thing I miss is the higher screen resolution found on the N80. Any idea why nokia took a step back with the n95?
Good point. I prefer N80 screen then N95 one. N95 should have VGA Screen... because if computers became that little resolution screen, I prefer a notebook.
Unregistered 25-04-2007, 02:20 PM <The UK stockists I have spoke to have, like the N93, no hopes for success of this device.>
Oh really? Why there are information like
- "Vodafone Liverpool Street sold out of Nokia N95s"
- "Carphone Warehouse is sold out of Nokia N95's".
- "Early results are promising: UK mobile phone outlet Carphone Warehouse has a message on its site limiting purchasers to one N95 'due to high demand,' and according to Nokia, boutique phone stores in New York City sold out within a day."
?
<Shame, Nokia once lead the industry>
Shame, Motorola once was a decent competitor.

Unregistered 03-05-2007, 07:29 AM I've been reading a bunch of other reviews from other websites on this phone and wanted to ask for your opinion on its battery life. I've read that it's rather shoddy. What do you think?
Unregistered 04-05-2007, 01:31 PM great phone but is it just me or does the battery need recharging every day? The battery life on mine is useless. Is anyone else having the same problem?
Unregistered 10-05-2007, 04:31 AM Yes I agree that this N95 is a very good phone, camera etc. However, its GPS performance is very poor and the CPU is a bit on the slow side. The GPS is not the latest SiRF111 20 channel receiver and this limits its ability to receive a strong sat signal. The N95 is a very expensive phone - If you want a device to perform highly in all areas then try the Asus P535. It has all the same features of the Nokia N95. Only downside is the 2mp camera. The Assu P535 has a touchscreen - this is great if you want to add a decent GPS software program like TomTom 6 etc. Something the N95 struggles to do as its processor is smaller!

Unregistered 02-06-2007, 10:34 AM In response to an earlier comment about ditching a digital camera and using nothing but a phone, yes I agree it is getting closer (LMAO at the awfull pictures the Sharp GX10 could take), but look at the sample photos in this review, they look bad, as I say to many people, its quality NOT quantity (eg. high megapixel doesnt always mean it will be great), it looks to me like the photos are interpolated (the device uses software to to stretch the image to 5mp from lower resolution). I have a fuji digicam which is 3mp (with a 6mp interpolated setting) and the photos it takes are stunning, very sharp and colourfull on 3mp setting which can be printed on a full A4 sheet of glossy photo paper.
1 other thing, the camera on the Sony Ericsson K800i are better than the N95 (which has a real flash, not a bright white led which blinds the people your taking the photo of but produces more natural colours), so if you want a much cheaper option which can replace a digicam for MOST people get that instead, it even has a pretty good mp3 player.
Take a look at this sample

Unregistered 22-06-2007, 11:53 AM Can I play MP3s on the N95 by streaming them from my PC hard disk, over Wi-Fi?
All I've found is that I can copy the files to the N95's SD/in-flash first and play them from there. But I want to browse my PC's HDD and play MP3s straight from it.
I'm not a Symbian user so I don't know if applications can be added to do this in the future.
Thanks very much.

The battery life could be an issue for some (needs a charge at the end of each day) But if you turn off certain apps, like the wi-fi sniffer, the battery life increases drastically.
It's by far the best phone i have ever used.
