View Full Version : Office handling now practical at last?
slitchfield 20-01-2007, 06:54 PM You'll have noticed Quickoffice 4 appearing on the front page side bar a day or so ago... Rafe and I have been trialling it on S60 3rd Edition for a few weeks now and here I present my Quickoffice 4 review. Summary: rock solid, great round-tripping and reasonable functionality, provided your office has a strict Microsoft-only policy.
Read on in the full article (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/4792_Office_handling_now_practical_.php).
wouterk 21-01-2007, 08:59 AM Nice review! And finaly a better Office program for my E61! :)
I installed the trail already and noticed that it is much, much faster to edit a cell in Excell now. THis is great.
One question though: Is the office installed on my E61 (latest firmware) also from Quickoffice? I don't think so because it looks very different en behaves (read: Slow) very different?
I which this quickoffice would be installed in the ROM of my E61. Much better program! ;)

Phil Spencer 21-01-2007, 10:42 AM Glad you like the new version, Wouter. Just for your information, the Office bundled in your E61 (and the E60, E62, E70) is provided by Nokia and is not Quickoffice. Any versions provided by Quickoffice are specifically identified by the 'Quickoffice' icon. However, you will find an older version of Quickoffice bundled in many other Nokia S60 3rd Edition phones - Quickoffice has a deal with Nokia which sees the suite delivered as part of the S60 platform itself. This latest version should be a great upgrade for existing and new users alike!
wouterk 22-01-2007, 06:53 AM Hi Phil,
Thanks for your comments.
I guess I'll have to buy the full product then. No change for an upgrade for me :(
But it seems that it will be worth the money! ;)

hargs48 22-01-2007, 07:56 AM Hi Steve when can we expect a side by side review between OfficeSuite v3 & QuickOffice v4 and see which is the best in day to day running.
slitchfield 22-01-2007, 08:01 AM I'll certainly revisit OfficeSuite this week - hopefully I'll be able to do a proper review and verdict on a winner by Friday-ish.

TANKERx 22-01-2007, 12:27 PM Is anybody else finding that using CTRL+B for Bold or equivalent formatting shortcuts causes QuickWord to completely bomb out thus causing me to lose all changes made since the last save (I'm using an E61 by the way)?
Cheers
Phil Spencer 22-01-2007, 01:32 PM Hi TANKERx - I am using v4.0.19.2 on my E61 (firmware 2.0618.06.05 14-07-06 from '3' in Hong Kong). I just tried this and did Ctrl+B/I on a new document (and opening an existing one) without problem.
wouterk 23-01-2007, 07:17 AM When comparing the two contesters, I guess you'll be paying attention to the speed difference in opening documents and (f.e) the input speed in Excel. I noticed a big difference in the way Quickoffice let's you input data in cells. Much, much better system! :)

ffarber 23-01-2007, 02:49 PM Hi Steve-
First post, E61 user. I would like to see the comparison as well. I am on my last five days of OfficeSuite trial base don your earlier review of that product. I like it much better than the built in application. I was planning on buying it until I read this review. They are the same price so whichever looks better to you (according the AAS site there is no trial available for QuickOffice).
Thanks,
Fred

No pressure or anything Steve :)
I would say that these comparisons are very difficult to make. However Quickoffice has been much improved in version 4 and is much better than the built in Suite. That said I haven't used Mobile Office Suite very much.
wouterk 23-01-2007, 04:56 PM Hi Fred,
You can download the trial from the quickoffice website. That's what I did if I recall it well... ;)

ffarber 23-01-2007, 05:20 PM Steve/Rafe-
Sorry about the pressure:) That is not what I intended.
I did go and check out the quickoffice web site. Not a trial in sight. The viewer-only version is free but I like to do a lot of editing when I travel and laptops are too heavy.
Cheers,
Fred
wouterk 23-01-2007, 06:05 PM Hi Fred,
I think I still got the trial on my PC. I'll check this later this evening.

wouterk 23-01-2007, 09:57 PM Hi Fred,
I'm sorry to say that I don't have the trial of Quickoffice.
I made a mistake. I've been using OfficeSuite trial like you... :embarasse
I guess I wasn't using my head!
So I'm as interested as you to the comparison of the two contestants

slitchfield 24-01-2007, 06:34 AM Eeek..... it seems that http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/software/item/Quickoffice_v4.php has stopped working - all together now: "Rafe!!!! - Helllppppp!"
Once that's up, I can see the status of a trial/no trial etc.
Steve
I've now corrected the link. I'm looking into the trial issue now.
So here's the situation on trials:
There is no trial for version 4 (yet).
You can download a viewer only version 3 from the Quickoffice website. BUT this is VERSION 3. Version 4 has a numbe rof enhancements and is available in 4 versions:
Buy full editors version 4.0 in the AAS store (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/software/item/Quickoffice_Premier_Editors_ROM.php)
Buy 'ROM upgrade' editors version (for those devices with Quickoffice already in their firmware) in the AAS store (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/software/item/Quickoffice_Premier_Editors_Non-ROM.php)
Buy full viewer version 4.0 in the AAS Store (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/software/item/Quickoffice_Professional_Viewers_Non-ROM.php)
Buy 'ROM upgrade' viewer version (for those devices with Quickoffice already in their firmware) in the AAS store (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/software/item/Quickoffice_Professional_Viewers_ROM.php)
wouterk 24-01-2007, 09:46 AM I noticed it already. There is no trial of QuickOffice.
I guess we have to wait the comparison review of the two and decided which to buy based on that review.

No problem on the product switch. It is hard to keep it all straight. However, now we really have increased the pressure:o
Rafe-
If the QuickOffice people relent and allow trials let us know.
Fred
ffarber 24-01-2007, 01:26 PM One last note. After my last post, I noticed an advert on the S60 News page of AAS urging people to try QuickOffice Premier.

Phil Spencer 25-01-2007, 10:29 AM Fred - "If the QuickOffice people relent and allow trials let us know."
In Symbian OS v9/S60 3rd Edition there are certain new rules and practices in terms of application installation and platform security. In addition, Quickoffice is one of only a handful of companies in the world who ship directly in the firmware of S60 phones as part of the S60 platform itself. Unfortunately, this combination presents some interesting challenges with regard to how S60 will permit application installation and upgrades over ROM installs. For numerous reasons related to this, Quickoffice are currently physically unable to offer trials of v4 (the technical details of which would be a VERY long thread!). I can assure you, however, we are working hard to look at ways of doing this in future though.
ffarber 25-01-2007, 05:56 PM Phil-
Thanks for the info!
