Hi,

I encoded a .3gp H.263 video for streaming, and uploaded it to my Linux box. I just can't get it to stream. I've tried http:// via the browser, and rtsp:// thru Real Player -- the first option proceeds to download the file; the second gives up with "can't connect".

Is there some rocket science here that I'm missing? Maybe a server-side problem or something?

All help very greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I Think that somebody has discussed this here before, did you do a search, you may get your answer quicker than waiting for somebody to respond with the answer.

Cash, I see you've been very helpful here offering people similar advice, and discussing Orb etc. My question is more specific. As I said, I'm trying to connect to a remote Linux server, and to stream a .3gp file to my N80. This is not Orb on my local network.

I searched for "streaming" in the N80 forum. Results are here:

http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum/search.php?searchid=1006917

I can't find a thread where my issue has been discussed before. Maybe I'm missing something?

Connecting to the BBC and other sites which employ dedicated streaming servers like Helix is not a problem for me.

If you can point me to a thread which discusses my particular issue I would be very appreciative.

Thanks!

This is the thread I was thinking about, it sounded very similar to what you were talking about, but that was only from memory, have a read and see what you think

Or there may be something that may be of help to you contained within it

Thanks Cash. The stuff addressed there isn't part of my problem, but I do appreciate your looking for me.

I think my solution would be for the N80 browser to understand what a .3gp file is and pass it to Real Player instead of the text pad. But nothing's ever simple :(

Thanks again!

have you set the network settings in the real player first before you try streaming, also what firmware do you have, there was a problem with streaming and realplayer in the old firmware that was sorted in the new firmware

Yes, I have network settings configured to talk to my WLAN. I have firmware:

V 3.0617.0.6
03-05-2006
RM-92
Nokia N80 (58.01)

Is this the firmware with the problem?

No, this is the latest firmware you have...

one other thing you may try, is your firewall configured correctly, I had this problem with orb that zonealarm didnt auto configure access, or warn me to configure, after I configured it worked ok

Maybe worth having a look at

just going through all the problems I had with steaming when I first tried:)

I think I'm right in saying that streamed files are different to standard files. I may be wrong, but I was under the impression you needed something specific on the server? (i.e. you need to set up a streaming server). Might be worth a look on the Helix wesbite to see if you can get more on this.

I think that's it in a nutshell Rafe, after another 6 hours wasted today messing with various encoders. Will try and find a webhost that offers a streaming service. If anyone knows of one, I'd be pleased to know, as I don't want to have to buy a complete Helix server just to enable video, for what is for me a small mobile audience.

Thanks!

Actually, I spent many hours yesterday trying to find a single video file on the internet that would stream to my N80. Nothing. Does anyone know of a working, streaming video link?

Thanks!

I never actually got any to work either, but there are some out there because I read that some people have done this, I know sites that use flash to stream wont work, and I think that sites that have the video embedded in their websites wont work either.

The only streaming I have managed to do is with orb and streaming from my computer.

Orb do have a test site so that you can check your N80, I have streamed from there

There are some streams on the BBC mobile site that work just fine.

Have a look at this http://sourceforge.net/projects/openstreaming
They appear to support 3GP streaming. Might be of interest.
