I have read how to set up IP passthrough to connect the E61 to the PC over the cable connection and use the internet connection available on the PC but who wants to be tethered to the PC in order to use the internet? Is there any way to utilise the bluetooth capability of the E61 and a bluetooth dongle on the PC so that you can connect in a more portable mode?

No. IP passthough works only with the cable.

However, with the E61, why not use WLAN/WiFi, instead?

So that when I am connected, like I am now, to a LAN in a hotel room without Wifi available, I can also connect using my E61 via bluetooth through the laptop and update my emails etc. on the E61.

Yes in that case you would need to use the USB cable.
