View Full Version : N80 Problem: Messaging
nub4sh 03-08-2006, 04:06 PM This is my first post here in allaboutsymbian.com, i constantly read this forum for updates and some problems that i encounter.
Anyway heres my problem, a month ago my girlfriend bought a silver N80 with a firmware version 3.0614.0.1 for about a week she has no problem with it, she was so happy. After a week, she complained to me that it was really slow on sending a txt message and it took her 20 seconds to send a single message (note: no other programs running in the background). Since we're both apart, i adviced her to soft-reset her phone by doing *#7370#. So, the problem was gone and we're both happy. A week after she complained of the same problem again, she did 4 soft-resets just about two weeks.I told her that when we meet i will flash her phone to a new firmware version 3.0617.0.6. Coz, i was thinking that i was a firmware bug. After flashing, the problem was gone again. She has a new firmware and shes very happy with it.
Days after flashing her phone, i bought also N80 for me, i got a new firmware version, the same as her. The phone was amazing and i was pretty happy to have it. So we both have new firmware but the problem arises again, not just her N80 but also mine, i compared it and it will send txtmessage for about 20 seconds.
I've read all of the threads here in N80 forum but i got no answer so i decided to make this thread. So, im gonna ask you, who among you guys have this problem? how did you manage it? Because when i bought my N80, it sends txt message pretty fast it wont last for 5seconds. And if you're thinking that its low on signal, no, signal is full.
Anyone who can help me with this? Coz im pretty tired of waiting for new firmware release.
reggie_mal 05-08-2006, 10:53 PM I'm having the same problem too!!! and its really annoying!!!
Please help...SOMEONE!!
peanutsarehairy 06-08-2006, 12:10 PM I will just add I have the same problem
Had the phone about a month and it started taking ages to send a txt
I'm on 3
try setting the log size to 1 day, I know this speeds the phone up, not sure though if it will help your problem, worth a try though, you can always change it back if it does nothing.
peanutsarehairy 06-08-2006, 01:18 PM Mines already set to 1 day
Nothing has changed. It only started doing this 2 days ago :(

Ok, scratch that idea :)...maybe its a network problem with the phone, are you all on the same network ??
icemanjimbo04 06-08-2006, 02:15 PM I have the same problem, i have the latest firmware and im with vodafone ireland so i doubt its a network problem.
Torps 06-08-2006, 05:33 PM I remember reading that it's just a quirk of the Symbian OS... the speed is avg for simple tasks like messaging, etc. I'm just reiterating what I heard though.
Jaffa-cake 06-08-2006, 11:31 PM same problem here, im on orange, at first it was quick but now its like it freezes up for about 30 seconds, its embarassing
nitro_rz 07-08-2006, 02:37 AM I have the same problem! i've been resetting my phone over and over again, and by doing this, it only solves the problem for a while, maybe a week. then it slows down again. This is probably the worst phone i've ever had.
Somebody please help. It takes ages to send messages!! :frown:
nub4sh 07-08-2006, 04:33 AM This problem sucks! i hope nokia knows about this and will fix it till next firmware upgrade. I doubt if its a network problem... im in philippines so im on Globe. for those who have this problem.. theres a temporary solution for it, you'll just hard-reset your phone by doing *#7370#. It'll be as fast a lighting again but it freezes again a week or two.
By the way people, how many messages you save on your sent items? 20 is the default right?
simmatt 07-08-2006, 10:37 AM i was thinking maybe just deleting your intire sent items and inbox, or maybe stop it from saving in your sent items
nub4sh 07-08-2006, 12:24 PM Even deleting inbox and sent item messages and also even uninstalling all programs that i can remove. Theres no way it will lessen the freeze time. It sucks when you have 3 or more messages incoming at same time. you can read the second message for 1 minute until the first reply is sent. I hope nokia will fix this.
mcsleazycrisps 07-08-2006, 01:50 PM Try actually formatting the phone. I had the same problem. I did a reset followed by a format and the problem has gone (been well over 2 weeks now).
reset with *#7370#
turn off the phone
hold GREEN key (send), 3 and * down
press the power key whilst holding the keys down to turn the phone on (then let go of power)
wait for the phone to boot (whilst holding the keys)
eventually the "set time zone" screen will appear
After doing this you will lose ALL of your settings and any files on the phone but it should be a whole lot quicker to send texts.
Jaffa-cake 07-08-2006, 06:04 PM i set my save sent messages to 600 so i can read what i have sent to people when i've been off my head :P but deleting inbox and sentbox doesn't make it any faster, this is another bug with the phone :(

Over 2weeks now? wow, thats great to hear. So no lag? no freeze while sending messages? It wont last for 20-30secs? tell me how many secs before it can send messages.
Jaffa-cake 07-08-2006, 06:14 PM it might fix it, but we SHOULDNT have to do this every time our phones go slow :(
nub4sh 08-08-2006, 01:07 AM You got a point there.. Nokia should have fix this a long time ago. I've noticed that not only N80 are getting slow when sending messages, also people complain about freeze with their phones, E70, E61, N91.. well most of the series60 3rd Edition phones.
For those N80 owners, do you have this problem also?
gergo 08-08-2006, 01:30 AM I'm also on Globe and I'm not experiencing this problem and I hope this doesn't happen! My phone is on GSM only mode. I can't call/text with 3G because Globe's weak 3G signal.
nub4sh 08-08-2006, 02:07 AM Really? What firmware do you have gergo?
How long since you used that phone? No freezing? No lagging when sending sms?
lovher 08-08-2006, 04:20 AM It'd be my pleasure to join the club
& i have some other problems like not installin' softwares or themes
anyone may reply pleaseeeee !!!!!!!!!!!:con? :con? :con? :con? :con?
nub4sh 08-08-2006, 04:57 AM lovher,
why dont you try the process above posted.
gergo 08-08-2006, 05:14 AM Nu4bish:
It freezes for about 4 secs and the messege is sent after two more secs.
I bought my phone mid-june. Self-upgraded it from v.3.0614.0.6 (apac version) to v.3.0617.0.6 (08). Is your 3G on? Where do you store your messages- in the phone or miniSD?
lovher 08-08-2006, 05:16 AM i did it twice but no change especially in installin' issue

Mine, when i press the green key to send the message, my phone freezes aprox 20secs and then it will took 10-20secs again to send the message. So, i cant do anything for 40secs. I save my messages in my phone memory.
Theres still no 3G signal here in our place.. :( i set my phone to GSM only
And you?
nub4sh 08-08-2006, 05:34 AM i did it twice but no change especially in installin' issue
I dont know with the installation issue coz i didnt see any problem with mine. Maybe you're installing applications that are not compatible with 3rd edition phone.
mcsleazycrisps 08-08-2006, 10:37 AM After formatting mine pauses for about 2 or 3 seconds which is about normal.
nub4sh 08-08-2006, 10:41 AM How long since your last reset?
Jaffa-cake 08-08-2006, 11:35 AM i store my messages to minisd but i have tried storing to phone memory but its still the same :( also, when installing java apps/games it takes almost 2MINUTES for the installation to appear this is not acceptable :(
nub4sh 08-08-2006, 12:59 PM Well I think theres no solution to this yet until the next firmware upgrade. but we dont know when will it be. :(
nitro_rz 09-08-2006, 05:17 AM i've already tried formatting the phone. it's also temporary. the problem still goes back. i'm also in the philippines.
Jaffa-cake 09-08-2006, 07:35 AM well i think i have come accross a new problem, today my n80 would not send anymore text messages no matter what i did, before this happened it was taking longer than ever to send a message, i assume whatever it is that causes the slowdown got full and couldnt accept anymore info thats why it qwouldnt allow me to send a new message, i did the format buy reseting the phone and then holding down the 3 buttons DAMN!!!! i forgot how fast it was when i first got it :):) now i love my phone again
icemanjimbo04 09-08-2006, 02:16 PM I did the format yesterday and so far so good..
Lost all calendar entries notes and other stuff, and took about 2 hours customizing the phone again..
But txts send after >2 secs.. Its great..
Just cant remember my mms settings ah well.. il figure it out someday..
daveday 09-08-2006, 08:45 PM I waited 6 months to get this phone as on paper it looked great, now that I've owned it for 5 weeks I can honestly say that the N80 is the WORST phone I have ever owned in 15 years.
I've experienced all the same problems as other users on this forum and have tried the format thing that worked for a while but I'm not prepared to do this every 2 weeks as it takes ages to set-up everything again plus you lose all the 'user defined' words in the dictionary.
I'm putting the phone on eBay ASAP and will NEVER buy Nokia again.
Regards,
Dave
creekybones 09-08-2006, 08:57 PM I agree with Daveday, I to waited for this 'Super' phone. The phone is being changed tomorrow for another N80, As this one restarts when it wants to.
If this one fails I will be changing for another model.
To say I am dissapointed is an understatment!

How many times have you reseted your phone?
I just read this on another forum that somebody replied to with messenging problems
"Just as an experiment, try using your phone in gsm mode only and see if it is a lot more stable, for some reason only having a partial 3g signal or none at all plays havoc with the phone."
Not sure how true it is
May be worth a go..
kooks 10-08-2006, 09:57 AM Does resetting the phone lose all the data or is that only when you format the phone?
I have to say, my N80 is pants! Takes AGES to send a text message and my battery only last 1 day with GSM mode!!!
Nokia...sort it out!!
Jaffa-cake 10-08-2006, 04:59 PM How many times have you reseted your phone?
that was the first time, there must be a big bug somewhere that gathers up something over time and makes the phone slower and slower, i send around 600 txts a month so maybe i suffered from it more than you people :)

Is it worth checking your phone memory over the period from reset to when its unusable to send text to see if there is some way that the memory is being used up and thus slowing the phone down.
nub4sh 11-08-2006, 02:49 AM My minimum sent msg a day is 200. I send alot of txt messages and it just reseted about 5days ago and its starting to slow down again..

the phone memory didnt go down at all it stayed around the 48000kb mark (i install everything to mem)
Are you guys using themes, I was just playing around with my phone and added a few themes and my phone has suddenly slowed down, and text messaging is taking probably 2 or 3 times longer to send, when I uninstall the themes and go back to the original the phone speeds up again.
Jaffa-cake 13-08-2006, 09:34 PM when my fone slowed down before i was using a built-in nokia theme...
when my fone slowed down before i was using a built-in nokia theme...
Ok..just a thought, I do know some themes slow the phone down, but i didnt have any problems with the built in theme.
I have a ctually found a really nice black theme....looks really nice simple and classy :)
nub4sh 14-08-2006, 03:15 AM What Theme is that Cash? can u send it to me? nub4sh@yahoo.com. :)
Anyway, i dont have any problem with the built-in theme, some theme slow down the phone but i guess it wouldnt affect sending msgs. Thats what i notice in my phone.
DENWiLS 15-08-2006, 06:48 AM change ur message setting to PHONE MEMORY and u will see how fast N80 in text messaging!
nub4sh 16-08-2006, 01:48 AM That wouldnt help DENWiLS. I know it is recommended to use the phone memory in saving your messages but the problem is still there.
nub4sh 19-08-2006, 06:14 PM I havent flashed my phone yet for the new firmware version... i just want to ask if this problem is solved?
Anyone who flashed their phone and have this problem?
gannan 13-09-2006, 04:00 PM im having the same problem as well..
anyway, is *#7370# gonna delete all my phone memory sms ???
anyone here has already solved the problem ?? help.. :frown:
TazUk 13-09-2006, 05:13 PM As posted elsewhere on this forum in another thread (and not by me), Nokia have released an SMS Accelerator for the N80. They advise installation whether or not you're actively experiencing problems..
http://www.europe.nokia.com/A4149142
nub4sh 14-09-2006, 02:11 AM Yes, its solved. I've installed it on my phone. :)
