I believe its a light sensor for the screen, so if its bright sunlight it brightens the screen so you can still see it clearly, and visca versa when its dark

This is correct, it also activates the keypad lights in dark situations, try it, stand in bright light and put your thumb over the sensor, voila, keypad lights up.

the 7650 had one of these lso however it never worked! funny though there was a option to turn it on and off in the menus
