View Full Version : SmartMovie
slitchfield 09-11-2005, 06:54 PM Summary: Competent and very reliable video encoding system, let down slightly by less than stellar performance of the player utility and the interface from hell.

rogerxnz 11-11-2005, 03:16 AM Steve, thank you for the review. Please clarify which version of the program you reviewed and also the other video programs you tried that you single SmartMovie out from as the "one system" you would go for.
I think there are at least two other programs with a similar purpose and I would like to know which ones you have tried (and found to be less suitable than SmartMovie. Would be great to see a comparison of the three or four programs in this area.

slitchfield 11-11-2005, 06:31 PM err... if you read my text, you'll see why I didn't like the other systems. To name them, though, I've also tried DVD Player/Lathe and Mobile Media Maker.
Which systems did you have in mind?
Steve
rogerxnz 12-11-2005, 10:44 PM Steve, I don't want to be "picky" but, comparatives, such as, "best" or the "one system", are meaningless unless you identify what you are making comparisons with. That is why I feel that, besides mentioning features of similar programs, you should also name the other programs so readers know whether "Program x" has been considered (and rejected) by you.
You query my reference to "systems" but I was only picking up from your reference to systems in the first line of the last para of your review: "If I had to pick any one system . . ."
I enjoy reviews of products--I was suggesting ways to make your review more valuable to me. Thank you.

Orophin Anwarunya 13-11-2005, 07:31 AM I've used smartmovie for all my s60 handsets and even the 7710, and its worked great, but for some reason it hast just worked for me on my 9500.
the film is always so slow and the audio offset too much from the action. so for the first time i tried the Mobile Movie Maker from Makayama Software and i was reallly impressed.
The conversion interface is bare and basic for the more knowlegeable user and i would hope future versions provide more in-depth options. The fact is i found that it worked perfectly, so much i almost cried and wondered why suffered for a month with Smartmovie.
I paid for the privilage and am enjoying Mobile Movie Maker so far.
sean 23456 30-01-2006, 08:14 PM thanks for the great review it sums up the smartmovie converter well,
ive also been using it for my 6680 for the last 6 months or so, and so many people have been impressed, baffled, etc, on how a mobile device can produce near dvd quality!
one querey i would have about the converter is, for me it is using 100% cpu to encode a full movie, and taking into account im using a topend pc i find this a bit strange, when using imtoo 3gp or similar prog. it only uses 50/60% maximum. Any ideas on this thanks sean
SMC version 2.76

i have also bought the (now called) Nokia Media Suite but at first it seems to work perfect and produce a real nice picture and sound but it only convert around 30 minutes of the DVD. I have emailed twice the tech support people but they will not answer me so the money i paid was for nothing

swingerman 15-10-2007, 02:09 PM Hi Guys,
I am using Smartmovie 3 years ago. I converted many dvd's videoclips for my 9500 and now for my E90 too. Unfortunately it does not support to make full wide screen like the 9500 and the E90 has.
Last week I found the solution. I found a free solution. Mediacoder is a free project. With mediacoder you can convert dvd quality movies even for the 800x352px E90's screen resolution. I tested to convert to 3gp format. The result is excellent.
You can adjust the deepest options possible (audio codec, video codec, mux, scrren cop, video effect and so on.
I have the preset for the E90, I can post later if somebody needs it.
Also free solution is Divx encoder wich is also free. If you register at go_divx_com and get a fee player for your mobile, wich has almost the same features that smartmovie has.
