I was just wondering if people like myself are having concerns about getting the N70 phone from Vodafone considering their restrictions with mp3 as ringtones etc.

With my 6630 I got round it by using ogg files, but theres talk that the current software for 60 series phones won't work on the n series?

what i did to play mp3 on my 6630 was i converted the .mp3 files to aac or mp4 using itunes and just uploaded them on the phone. they play flawlessly as ringtones!

vodafone are indeed bitches about restrictions; but they do release the phones first so im with them for the time being

just had a chat with customer services earlier; they told me the n70 should be released some point this month! they had no idea about the n90 tho :(

To avoid all Vodafone customization/limitations, buy a retail/open market N70, instead of a Vodafone branded version & stick your Vodafone SIM in it.

costs too much :(

Then consider switching to an operator with cheaper calls, because with a subsidized/contract phone, you will still end up paying full price for the phone anyway through more expensive calls & messages over the contract-time (operators will make up the difference somehow; they have to).

Most of my ringtones are saved as Ogg files but last night I tried setting mp3 and aac files as tones and they worked fine so there appear to be no Vodafone restrictions on music files...

Mine did not come with Opera installed.

I concur, mp3s as ringtones are fine, no opera.

I asked the guy in the Vodafone store about it and he said it was only 2 phones that the mp3 problem occured, and one was the Sony Ericson K750i

There is no ringtone restriction in my vodafone n70, nor was there any in my vodafone 6680.

Thanks... yeah I found theor website.. looks a good application to have.

Now so i understand this... I currently have Vodafone Wap that I connect to Vodafone Live with and also use Vodafone Wap to get my weather updates automatically....

I also have Vodafone Internet on my phone, but when I tried to use it to get my weather updates, it didn't like it....

So if I install Opera, you reckon if I choose Vodafone Internet, it will work ok??

Where did you find Opera for the N70? It's not on my Voda mobile and their site says coming soon.

Well thats what I thought as the site says "coming soon".
But surely one of the other handsets must be compatible because there are a few on here that are running it!??!?!!?

Anyone having trouble sending MMS messages on Vodafone ??

If I send a picture or video up to about 40K it works fine.

Anything larger and it doesn't send, Vodafone say there is no problem and I should be able to send up to 100K

Any ideas !!

Well I've just sent one that is 53k no problem..... all my other pics are either under 40k or over 100k at the moment.... haven't tried sending anything bigger than 100k!

Update... just sent another pic to one of the girls here... it was showing as 243kb in my gallery.
Sent it as an MMS and the phone reduced it down to 9kb and it went through....

So I checked the original one I sent which was 53k in my gallery, and it has been reduced down to 4kb.

So I'm not sure exactly how this works, but it seems to be compressing the messages... well thats my opinion.
So I'm finding it strange how you guys are struggling......
Anyone any ideas?

I'm having the same problem:

http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum/showthread.php?t=41865

I've tried an Orange Sim card in my phone and managed to successfully send a 53kb MMS. Do you have the Vodafone branded N70 or is it a 'vanilla' handset without the Vodafone branding on? From another forum I read someone had the same problem but it was solved when they exchanged their unbranded handset for one of the branded ones...

Mine is vodafone branded, front and rear.

I stuck my sim back in my 6680 and it sends perfectly, so its not the sim.

Gadget, the best way to test is to go to: New MSG/Multimedia Message/once the message is created goto: Options/Insert New/Video Clip

This will allow you to record a small clip with the correct settings for a MMS

Record the clip for about 5 sec then try and send to yourself.

Not quite sure what you're trying to show here....
I followed your instructions;

Opened up a new multimedia message, added myself as the recipient, wrote "test" in the subject, scrolled down to where you would write a message, Options, Insert New, Video clip, recorderd for 6 seconds, and then sent it......

But it's just sitting in my outbox... saying "waiting, sending" trying to send.
Then it stops and schedules itself to resend in 5 minutes?!?!?!?!

What exactly is this proving??

Okay, I think I understand what you were getting at now... it's the message size issue.
Obviously pictures that I sent earlier were sent as texts?? Maybe?? But they exceeded the 40kb.

But this is actually creating a movie to send.
Right then, the 6 second one was 78kb.... and just kept trying to send...
the 4 second one was 47kb.... and just kept trying to send...
So I just took a 2 second movie, it's 34kb... but this is doing the same...

Are you sure you can send a message to yourself??? Never done it before??

So frankly, I'm still confused!
Got no-one here right now I can test it with, so I'll try later with the Wifes phone....

Could it be something to do with the format???

I noticed the that if I take a movie, then it is saved as an MP4, where as if I take a movie within a message, then it's 3GP

Just a thought??!!

Ok, cancel that, you can't send MP4's as anMMS.

This phone gets stranger by the minute...
When you record something, say a night out down the pub, it'll get saved as an MP4. But then you're stuffed to send it to anyone....

I'm really not understang this!!!

You seem to have the same problem as me. In theory you should be able to send jpg and 3gp files of up to 100kb in size via MMS. The reason you can't send mp4 files is they are so large. I guess you could send them via email instead but the data cost will be high!

You can definitely send MMS messages to yourself. It has worked for me in the past.

So basically we all have the same fault

Now is it a problem with the phone or the vodafone network won't accept messages correctly from N70's

Or anyone can goto carphonewarehouse and speak nicely and they will do this for free...if your talking about the firmware.

I find them very helpful in that shop and the techies seem to know what they are doing unlike other shops! :D
