Hi all, this is my first post, so go gentle on me ok :-)

It would appear that after 31 years on this earth I have finally reached the age where Technophobia begins to creep in to ones mindset and I am totally stumped by a piece of modern technology...no longer will I mock my parents for being unable to operate a video recorder!

I am the proud owner of a new Nokia 6600 and I am extremely eagre to make full use of this, supposedly, wonderous piece of kit. However, I find the instruction manual to be a little vague and cannot quite work out how to download and install apps. I recently purchased two apps. from Symbianware.com, whether this was a good idea or not remains to be seen, nevertheless, I have tried on three occasions to download the software using my handset. Each time the download completes I receive the file in note text format. The only option I have is to save the files as note text? I realise that I am doing something totally wrong, but cannot find a simple step by step guide to downloading and installing software. The other annoying factor is that I am paying for these downloads each time as a result of O2's GPRS tariff, so I don't want to keep trying and failing.

I have tried to contact Symbianware support to no avail and don't know what else to do.

Can anyone give me some pointers on how to make the most out of my new phone or point me to a decent link that put things in laymans terms as this is the first time i have used mobile web / Smart phone technology.

What, exactly, did you use to do the download?

Can you download them as .sis (Symbian Installation System) files to a PC? If so,...

...then, if your PC has infrared, you can turn that on in your phone, align the infrared ports and then send it to the phone from the PC. On Windows use the Explorer to select the file, right click and choose "Send To", etc.

Same approach also works with Bluetooth.

Perhaps this is where I am going wrong. I have been assuming that you can download and install directly using the handset without the aid of a PC or laptop. Is this not the case? Basically, I went to the website that I wanted to get the software from, clicked on the download option and downloaded the files. I take it I can't do it like that then?

What type of file(s) are you trying to install?

Hi Raven,

I am trying to install the Powerdictaphone and the FullscreenCaller software from the Symbain site, but each time I do I, the download ends and I am faced with a screen full of code in a notepad format with nothing but an option to save as a notepad entry...


Basiclaly, I am doing the following.

From my phone handset.

Services
Connect to Server - Yes
Go to Web Address
I then enter the following link.

http://www.symbianware.de/index.php?pl=n6600

I then go to the download link on the web page and click open on my handset, which appears to start the download. Afterwhich time, I get the garbled note text. I don't actually get the option to download on the handset...ie. I have "Open" as an option, but not "Download" which I think is the problem.

Hmm, I assume you're using the built-in browser, right? In that case it may be some download restrictions using a WAP only browser, or some gateway restrictions from your operator. When you have clicked 'open' and the download is finished, you *should* get automatically directed to the App. manager where you will be prompted to install. I only use the Opera browser and have no problems downloading stuff.

Anyway, my two suggestions are:

1. Go to to wap.my-symbian.com and try to download the files from there.
2. If you don't have a computer with IR nor Bluetooth, you can simply e-mail the files to yourself, assuming you have set up the e-mail client on your phone.

I have also tried to set up my email client, but that is proving difficult also! O2 customer support is lacking to say the least....I don't seem to be getting anywhere fast..

I see. But downloading the files from wap.my-symbian.com should work fine with the built-in browser, I suggest you try that.

Try the Nokia Configurator to get your e-mail set up:

Downloading software from the phone can be a bit hit and miss depedning on your phone provider. Not all of them support large files (typical web page <50kb - typical install file 75kb+)

and yes the manual is less than helpful...

I can really recommend getting a Bluetooth dongle for your PC. That way you can send files directly to your phone.
