View Full Version : Looking for full versions of software
TANKERx 23-09-2002, 11:36 PM Yo guys!
There's been a recent resurgence of people asking for serial numbers for and copies of full versions of software.
I've already deleted a few of these posts (and PM'd the people in question), but I just want to make clear that this forum is not for the swapping, trading or pirating of any software. Please don't ask for full versions of software, or their serial numbers - if you do, your post will be deleted.
It's nothing personal. If you really want the software, save up and buy it. (much of the software requested is only $10) None of us have a divine right to use someone's software without buying it, and there are some titles I don't have because I simply cannot spare the cash.
C'mon, have a laugh, but don't discourage the developers! We're lucky to have them visiting this site, reading what users are saying and implementing the ideas brought up. The last thing they're going to want to see is copies of their software being given away for free.
Palendrone 23-09-2002, 11:40 PM Good post my friend ! re-itters many points that many ppl dont like !
Even if you are that way inclined to get things for free ILLEGALLY at least dont have the gall to come to this lovely reputable site and beg for it !
MaxiMuS 24-09-2002, 03:20 AM Give full support for all the developers as without them our smart mobile will be dull. Salute TANKERx for your effort. A tenner is not much for a worthy software that consume maybe more than 300 hours developing time.
:D
OsirisMedia 24-09-2002, 03:43 AM well to be honest I dont like paying for software on a damn phone I really dont, and I dont have a ccard, but thats my problem and I live without that software that requires that. Just letting you know I acknowledge the forum rules.
mATRiX 24-09-2002, 10:28 AM I only can say LOL to this post. I really buyed some apps now, ie IM+, SeleQ, Screensaver but i say and alwways said, there are many more apps i want and i need and i will NOT buy them all. Developers just take too much money for some kilobytes of code. I already talked about this in a other post here, i pay about 40 euro for a pc game with 3 cd's and so 1,8 GIGAbyte of data. why should i pay 10 or even 15 bucks for a game or app having about 100k of code ? The development time AND coding time for such a app is much much much more less than a pc game or app. They only program some days on it like you see. I really don't ask after pirated software here but i will like many others do search for it and even use it if there are cracks and serials around working. And EVEN you have for sure used a copy of anything in your lifetime. Don't tell people you buy everything original, nah..i don't believe you. No offense here, just to let you know that i guess that 50% of your users here that EVEN buyed software for their 7650 would also use pirated copy's if they can get them.
Your post nearly got deleted, if it wasn't for the fact that the webmaster here is a strong beliver in free speech it would have been. (Note to others posts just asking for software will be deleted). However I just thought I answer a few of you points. This isn't meant to be an exhaustive defence, but does outline my standpoint.
First I say that I agree with what Tanker said. I also like it to be know that there will be a tigthening up on this over the next few weeks, especially as the foum has got a lot busier. Asking for software codes etc. is unacceptable. This is a friendly community which some developers frequent and which allows a lot of useful feedback from the users. I don't want to get heavy handed about this. I realise some people make a genuine mistake or sincerely believe they are entitled to this software. EVEN if you do think this you should respect the forum rules.
Now on to a few counter points...
Ahh, thats not really the point. Aside from the fact that generally you're dealing with an individual coding (not a large company) and thereby stealing from an indvidual (with some arguing this is worse than from a corporation - personally I think both are wrong). The amount of code is irrelevant to the price should pay for several reasons. Firstly measuring the amount of code in lines is like measuring diamonds by weight - some code is of higher quality that others and therefore is 'worth more'. Surely you want your software to do as much as possible in as little space as possible. On the 7650 with its limited memory would you use an program that took twice the space but did the same job as one taking half the space. By your logic the bigger sized program is better...
Secondly the phone and pc markets are completely different. The market size is different. While a game company can expect to sell 100,000's of copies of the game a small developer for the Symbian platform can at the moment even with the best selling app expect around 2-3,000 sales. You can see that the big company can have lower margins to cover their costs and there revenue is far higher because they slll many more units. In addition there are many small shareware program for the PC at about the same price as on the Symbian platform.
The Symbian platform is in fact one of the cheaper devices to buy for. There are many freeware programs and the majority of those for sale are of very high quality. Programming on the Symbian platform is not as simple as people suggest - if it was why wouldn't all the people asking for software write it themselves - and if they reply - I dont ahve the time or the skills well then the simple answer is you have to pay for time and skills just as you would anywhere else... Servicing a car may be easy - but most people pay a professional to do it for them.
And EVEN you have for sure used a copy of anything in your lifetime. Don't tell people you buy everything original, nah..i don't believe you. No offense here, just to let you know that i guess that 50% of your users here that EVEN buyed software for their 7650 would also use pirated copy's if they can get them.
Two wrongs don't make a right. Even if people have pirate something before it doesn't mean they should do so again. And yes I kow people pirate software, and yes I suspect many people using the forums do so and do so reguarly. That doesn't make it right. If this post makes one person register legitimately then that fine by me.
Finally I'd say remeber the developers are people like me and you. They will be put of by people asking for cracks etc. Most software is difficult to pirate because it is tied down by an IMEI number. They could probably make it harder. The authors deserve are respect and support. They are the life blood of the community. Remember that.

J2theIZZO 24-09-2002, 12:25 PM This is a bit of a sticky subject, I totally agree with not ripping off small companies that produce Symbian software, If they didn't exist your smart phone/pda may as well be a Nokia 5110 with a camera/Casio Databank.
The things is that some forms of copying/cracking has become socially acceptable, for example music cd's, large expensive PC programs (Windows springs to mind), Playstation games. People don't think of the consequences, they just think about getting something for free.
A huge example of this is ITV Digital, the "chipped" cards were so easily available that at one time it was estimated 25% of people using ITV Digital were not paying for the service. I know the fall of ITV Digital wasn't just down to this (Mostly to football) but this was also played big part in it's demise.
I think knowing were to draw the line is hard for most people, I'm the first one to admit that I copy music cd's for myself, but in such a new and still very small market I don't think it is right to this to such small and vulnerable companies.
Well that's my view on it anyway.
Palendrone 24-09-2002, 12:38 PM my last comment on this topic would be to say that if you think that ripping them off is kewl then think again because you should respect what they do for the end users !
DO YOU know how to program the software ?
DO YOU have the patience to do it ?
