I use freeserve with no problems at all, set up a "PAYG" account with them, activate your email account by accessing it on their webpage. I'll post the server settings and dial-up number for you if you want.

Mailbox Name: Freeserve
Access Point in use: Freeserve (I'll post the access point you need to create later on)
My Mail Address:Your@name.fsnet.co.uk
Outgoing Mail Server: smtp.freeserve.com
Send message: Immediately
Username:username.fsnet.co.uk
Password: Your password
incoming Mail server: pop.freeserve.com
mailbox type: POP3
security: Off
APOP secure login: OFF

Here's your Access Point:

Connection Name: Freeserve
Data Bearer: High Speed GSM
Dial Up Number: 08450796699
Username:Your@name.fsnet.co.uk
prompt Password: NO
Password: *****
Authentication: Normal
Gateway IP address: 0.0.0.0
Data Call type: Analogue
Maximum Data Speed:28800

Please use your common sense and don't copy word for word (Your@name.fsnet.co.uk ect)

All you need now is a Email address, password and username from Freeserve and your sorted.

Create the access point first. Then your mailbox.
