Hello!

I would like to find testers for our new game, Legacy. You can check the pre-shots on our website, www.redshift.hu.
The game is almost complete, we need a few more days (max a week).

If you have a 9210, I would like to ask something: how much execution memory do you usually have? And after reset? The game may have problems on normal 9210, because of the low execution memory. However, it runs correctly on our 9210 device, but it's almost clean and as I know many installed applications/recogs/etc can eat the execution memory easily.

So: we would need testers with 9210/9210i/9500 device.

Thank you!

Stewe

Thanks! I'll be back asap.
Just a few todo items and some alpha tests before I can give you the game, of course with a free regcode.
Ewan, do you have a possibility to create a hidden forum on this site? That's because too many testers aren't good, as well as too few. The optimal number should be reached, 5-10. And I could manage the number of testers by let them enter the private forum or not.

Based on my tests, on 9210, you will be able to play with the game after reset, when the free memory is above 3 MB.

No, I really don't want to skip you! Sorry for this process... I have more years experience in beta-testing and saw that when *many* testers start at the beginning, when a game probably has more errors, then they found the same errors multiple times, and the testing can be annoying. That's why the testers should be invited day by day, week by week, it's a continuous process.
If you check the number of posts in this topic, then you can see there aren't too many people who want to test :)
So you're in! And thank you for your help, in advance!

Stewe

Well, I badly need a brave humanoid with a 9500 device :(
Since we don't have a 9500, I just hope that my code will work. The emulator doesn't mean anything, but of course the game works in the os7/series 80 emu.

Hello!

First test version.... http://www.redshift.hu/stewe/LegacyTest1.sis
The next test versions should be a single .app, I'll post it here (since the data files are pdb ones - probably they won't be modified).

Could you please check it ?

Info:
- as I have mentioned, memory problems on 9210 (a reset could help)
- The starting process is very slow... I don't think I can improve it, sorry.
- Don't forget to get more members in the first city, because you start with only 1 character (random type)
- If you have a mood, please check David Eaton's review... it's for Palm, but the game is the same: http://www.redshift.hu/legacyreview/legacy.htm
- the help is for Palm/Ppc version, I'll work on this

Until that, quick help for keys:
GENERAL KEYS: Enter works as "Yes", ESC - "No" when you see a question. Enter and Space can select an item from a list, ESC can close the same list. There are buttons in the game, with highlighted character in their title (as shortcut).
GAME SCREEN KEYS:
- Up/Down: forward/back. Left/Right: turn. Ctrl-(left/right): slide
- Enter-Melee attack/Hit something
- C-Cast, then TAB-change spell category, arrows - select a spell, then C or space or enter - cast that spell
- 1..4: select a member in the party, pressing again: enter the member's inventory.
- P - pick up
- M - full-screen map (ESC closes it)
- Space: enter a door, use something, open a barrel's/vase's inventory, ...
- E: end attack turn, probably I should show a blinkink "*E*nd of turn" at the right/top corner of the game screen
INVENTORY: you can see the shortcuts...
OTHER SCREENS: shortcuts, almost everywhere

Please post here the results. You can send me your IMEI for the regcode, however, please wait for until the game doesn't let you advance more (level 6), or blocks you (after killing N'Gora - probably more hours play).

The next test version can be in 1-2 days, I have several, very small issues - for example:
- X - immeditely return to main screen from game screen (for saving...)
- Arrows in the inventory item list - to see if there are more items than the currently visible ones
- Communicator-specific Help text
- ...

AND! You can download the first downloadable, additional map for the game: Morah's plan. It should be copied to the Legacy directory on your device (\system\apps\Legacy\). Now if you go to the Global Teleport in the first city, then you should see a new teleport target: "Morah's Plan". This map is optimized for a party with level 2-4 characters.
download url: http://www.redshift.hu/Legacymap/Morah.pdb

Later, I can give you the expansion pack... it's connected to the 3rd city, Grendelmoore, and optimized for level 15+ characters.

And... sorry for my English! :)

Well I have something like 33-35% of ram free after a reset in my 9210 and it is not enough. I was able to see the intro, but as the game was about to start, I got an error message. Maybe there is something I could do to free more execution memory... The intro was cool, though

Redshift did it again.

Nice Job, Steve.

Here are my first impressions:

This game is definitly a memory eater. But it seems to be worth it.
Only had very few problems: Sound settings are not working as expected, If you change a sound setting it only seems to work after some time. (read when there's a change in some ingame structures e.g. new dungeon or something like that)

Then i had a crash while trying to load my very first autosave. Luckily i saved before quitting manually.

Is there a way to revive a Character? The difficulty is higher than i expected it to be.

I'm only level 2 so far. But it makes as much fun as the 2 splendid games from redshift before.

so long for now,

SirKline aka Arne

Hello!

More answers...

:icon2: The execution memory tester: http://www.redshift.hu/stewe/avail.sis (5 KB) this is the tool you might need to check the available execution memory. Legacy needs at least ~3.2 MB to start.
The execution memory isn't the same as store memory (internal, card)
It can't be expanded, and running programs eat it. After reset, it's almost clear, probably you can have up to 4 MB, based on installed programs, auto-running apps, recogs, fonts, and so on (who knows)

:icon2: Laura: please try the game after a reset, and check your execution memory with the tool. You should have more than 3.2 MB.
BUT! After reset, if you start the system tasks (calendar, ...), they decrease the execution memory. So you should *immediately* start Legacy after reset.
I hope I can make the game to require less execution memory... not sure.

:icon2: Sound: There are more problems with the sound playback... I'll work on this problem tomorrow. Maybe I can fix the current method, or I can switch to another sound library (a streaming one - but streaming is a pain).

:icon2: Instructions, info, hints, tips.
You can read David Eaton's review, as I mentioned it before: http://www.redshift.hu/legacyreview/legacy.htm
Dedicated hints/tips page for Legacy:
http://www.hyperflame.com/toby/legframeset.html
AND! You can investigate the Legacy forums on www.cliesource.com and www.pdarcade.com. The PPC, PALM and SYMBIAN versions are almost the same! I mean the game's inner structure, the maps, the solutions.

:icon2: SirKline: Thank you :)
Revive: you can do it later, with "Raise Dead" spell/scroll or a black fountain. After start, you can hire another characters, and leave the dead ones in the tavern - rip.

:icon2: TheSpecialBoy: sound error... I detected these errors: happen when the audio player is trying to be initialized, but you press a menu item *before* the finish of the initialization. Pressing the main menu items means stopping the sound (except "start new game", as I remember). Solution: rewriting the sound playback routines.

:icon2: SirKline: Ashela can be found in N'Gora dungeons... you'll find her. Just don't be afriad of a stuck door.

Btw prepare yourself, the base game can give you more than 50 hours gameplay, and the Expansion Pack (which is free for you all) means another 50+ hours.

Did you check Morah? Success?

And, another thing: the Legacy Editor (PC) is in beta-testing phase. If you're interested, I can give you the beta-download url, and let you enter the private Editor Beta forum on www.pdarcade.com. It's a complex editor, the base world and the Expansion Pack were made by that Editor (as well as Morah). Screenshots:

Smart move my lady. I wonder how the expansion pack can be installed ;) great job redshift ! I only wonder why haven't you build a tutorial. Took me 2 days to understand the game rules and play tricks :) well i have some minor bugs discovered but i need to be sure first. You can turn a character alive by getting rid of it @ the bar and then getting it hired again :) or hire another one. An auto save feature would be nice redshift.:)

Hello!

Laura: you were right, *maybe* you should turn off the phone sometimes. That's because... hmm... maybe the Communicator wouldn't have enough memory to handle the incoming call, then the game is running, and you're on a map that requires much memory. This is just an idea :)

SpecialBoy: you can install the Exp Pack anytime, but it's connected to the 3rd city, Grendelmoore. You'll like the swamps around Grendelmoore, for example :) Undeads, Dragons, and so on.
Tutorial: you're right... the "help" could help :), just I didn't have time to make the Communicator version. The sound playback makes me crazy.

Btw: NEW TEST VERSION!!!
http://www.redshift.hu/stewe/LegacyComm3.zip
Changes:
- smaller size
- less required memory, I had to remove some sounds... the ambient ones. I know it's a reasonable thing, just these sounds required about 200KB memory.
- rewritten sound support. And 50% ready streaming version (I have serious problems with the streaming). So... if you still have problems with the new version's sound playback, then I have to make the streaming version.
With streaming, the application will be larger! Because the API sound needs 8 bit wavs, but the streaming needs 16 bit wavs.

Auto-save: as you can see, the save is a bit slow... I think I shouldn't force users to wait for periodically auto-saves. What do you think?

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!!!

Saving is indeed slow so perhaps auto-save would not be a good idea. Besides, isn't it one of the tricks of the game to remember to save every once in a while? I always kick myself when I realize I've been too busy with the game to save.... and then I get killed, and have to start it all over again... :D

I thinlk we can download a PDF with LECACY User manual for another platforms.

Regarding Game:

POINT I

If I put a charger in the telephone 9210 ver 4.13, sometimes the game get stucked. It freezes and I cannot return to game. Happend 4 times to me.

I start with 50% free memory according to smart memory.

When I restart the game takes me to a auto restore point wich i did not saved... each time I start with the character 2 in the forest.

POINT 2

It will be nice for me to test the entire game...not to play and discover... so a tips and tricks where quest can be solved and items found will be great.
dragos_popescu@msn.com :)

POINT 3

I don`t understand why is needed to turn MAP to the left or to the right when you can turn only the caracter arrow.

It gets me confused, because As i learned since I was litle, each MAP faces NORTH.

I think instead of changing map direction when the character turns, changing the arrow that indicates the character shoul be better.

POINT 4

When i put a character to cast spells "press C" i got let`ssay fire blast. If I press enter the character does not cast the spell. I need to press TAB and browse between magic items and when I reach Attack again press cursor DOWN and select the spell. And only then it works.

POINT 5

If we register the GAME, are some secret areas and secret spells revealed

POINT 6

Instructions:

From where can we get a list of characters, abilities, the results of spells and what they are required to do.

POINT 7

You should give to the user the possibility of TRAINING session, especially for the CARD Play :)

Is great but there are some skills to be practiced and learned.

POINT 8

The only diferences between VER. 1 and VER 3 are the one you mentioned before? I hear some noises during the game like "POC" ,......"POC" and I do not know the cause of them....

POINT 9.....to be completed after some more play....

SpecialBoy, here is the answers...

so.

MANUAL: we don't have manual for the other platforms... a 3rd party group makes it, but they are really slow.

POINT 1: I'll check the charger problem tomorrow, that will be the 2nd :)
I can't understand your auto-save problem: the auto-save is made during exit, and there is a question at startup, whether you want to load it or not. Or do you have a bug with this process?

POINT 2, hints: I could send you the hints/tips page url... http://www.hyperflame.com/toby/legframeset.html , this is the best source. I don't know better, except if you ask in this forum, and I'll try to help. Sylon designed all the maps, except final ones, but I know these maps.

POINT 3, map rotating: I was thinking about it a lot. I agree, the map would be better without rotating. Let's try this in the next version (tomorrow!). I included the rotating because of the compass.

POINT 4, cast problem: yea, it's a bug! Thank you! Will be corrected for the next version

POINT 5: registration means your party can advance beyond level 6, and you won't be blocked after killing N'Gora. So the shareware area is a bit large!

POINT 6: Check the "help", the "classes" section shows the character classes. We don't have more information for characters. Spells: the only source is the inventory screen, Spells section, and selecting a spell.

POINT 7, card: how should I make the training ? Or... a "card" section in the help would be good ?

POINT 8, POC POC :) : maybe step sound... when do you hear it? During any of the effects? Or during a few of them ?
(I'll check this tomorrow, too)

Thank you for your help!!!

The sound settings work only if you display the menu. The issue is that any "respectable" ;) game has a sound volume indicator like a scale or indicator for minimum and maximum level reached :) may be redshift can do a patch and improve this also. But during ingame you cannot adjust sound.

Hi All,
I’m Louis Lipp; Lippdinos@pobox.com I’ll be joining the Legacy beta test group. For the past couple of days I have been having a little trouble logging so I have been emailing my bug reports to Stewe. All is [hopefully] well now but I wanted to keep you up to date on what I’ve been up to on my side of the world. Here’s the short rundown.

My system:
Communicator model: 9210I
Rom: 05.54 (Portuguese, dang.)
Memory: External 128mb verbatim mmc, 17megs free.
Free internal: 3228k (I had to open up some space)

I generally don’t have more than 1meg executable memory on my machine but redsoft games seem to give me incentive to find space. We really need more complex games for the communicator, I’m glad someone has their foot on the ball.

Stewe, thanks again for the tips and the patience since I’m still a little new to the communicator.

I have been reporting all sorts of bugs but almost all of them have to do with trying to run Legacy with less than the recommended (3.2megs) of executable memory so I won’t really get into details about those for now.

Apparently the 9210I has some problems with the sound on this program, no matter how much memory I use to run it (3.4 megs free last count). Anyone else here have a 9210I?

Well, back to business, here's my last bug report:

Bug report 5
12-4-4
Louis Lipp
Lippdinos@pobox.com

Installed Legacy (3rd file), the one that’s missing some of the old sounds.

3321k executable memory free.

No bug?: Game started up fine, at main menu music plays for about a minute and stops. I’m guessing the music is supposed to stop because I keep reporting. All the menus seemed to work fine and when I quit it went back to my Desktop peacefully. (First time!)

Bug 1: (sound won’t toggle) when I press ctrl-s on the main screen I see the red line show up over the speaker but the sound keeps on playing.

Note: game started up without a problem. I can hear the characters movement, I’m still sorry we lost the other sounds though but I understand they had to go.

Obs.fix?: in the inventory screen the white text looks a little gritty, just doesn’t look good and can be a little hard to make out at times. The other colors are fine. After playing the game a little I noticed that the white text is also hard to read in the quest menu and others. If you don’t want to change the color, I suggest you at least make the text boldface to solve this problem.

Obs: from spell book menu (‘C’ at main screen) you cannot change to another characters book without exiting, selecting the other character and pressing ‘’C’ again. Could be a little more practical if we could just press 1-4 while in here as well.

Bug 2: (memory crash) When I ‘sleep’ at the inn I got the ‘out of memory’ error screen. Game locks up and after a minute I get this error: Kern-EXEC ; error #:3.
Right after that message I pressed the hotkey for taskmanager and that crashed as well. Message: Taskman ; Eikon-Listbox; #5

Note: I freed more memory and tried to sleep at the inn again (now with 3444k free) and it worked fine. Every test below this line is performed with 3444k free.

Bug3: (sound crash) While playing cards at the inn, (this only happened once so far) I got the error message:
Media Server
Kern-exec
3
after that the game still played perfectly but with none of the sounds.

Bug4?: (unverified) I had some trouble with combat in the gnome house but I want to look into it further to see if I can repeat the error.

Neat Glitch: (character duplication) At the inn, I unloaded 2 dead characters and went to hire more. I noticed that one of the guys up for hire was already in my party (Lord Bregennan) I hired him and he turned out to be identical to the guy I already had in the party, including xp and items. I did not really try to duplicate this yet.

Here are some suggestions that you may not like but..: (Group, your thoughts?)

It would be really practical if we could have a save hotkey, Ctrl+S maybe?

I would strongly suggest that the map on the left side of the screen not rotate with the 1st person view. If instead of the map moving around the arrow (that indicates the party), how about if the arrow moved around on the map. We already have the 1st person view for realism so the rotating map just ends up being a little confusing and less useful for navigation. It can also be confusing to have so much movement on the screen.

This is just an thought, but … what do you think about having the objects on the ground flicker when we step directly on them? I often step right over things without noticing them, especially dark objects in a dark rainy forest, realistic as it may be J

Hello!

Welcome on board, Lipp! :)
I just realized you sent me this message via email, but I think the forum reply would be better. Hmm I can send it to you as an email, too.

- Sound: I have made modification in the sound system (again). After this message, I'll upload the new version.

- CTRL-S: now it works in the new version.

- White text in inventory: I check this! It's in my list now.

- Chaning character when you see the spellbook: ok! Will be in the game (next version)

- Sleeping: I have to check this... it's a fade routine, and this fade is a trick on Communicator.

- Media server error, while playing with card game: probably I started more sound at the same nanosecond :) That's the only thing I can imagine. It needs deeper examination.

- Character duplication: Oucchh! OOpps, it seems to be a huge bug! Don't know how, but it's a Communicator-specific bug. Will be tested tomorrow.

- CTRL-S: now you can use CTRL-S, CTRL-up/down from the game screen (in the new version I'll upload in 10 minutes). So the CTRL-S is reserved. What can I do: X is the key that you can use to reach Main menu from inventory screen. I can map the same X key from the game screen. It's not a direct link to save your game, but could help a lot. What do you think ?
- In the new test version, the map rotating is stopped. You'll see and will like that :)
- I'll think about this item notification. Not a bad idea!

(Now uploading the new test version)

So, the new version:

http://www.redshift.hu/stewe/LegacyComm4.zip

And please, when you post something, write your test version. Would be easier for me to imagine the problem. Thanks!

Changes:
- Spell-casting problems. It seems the problem occurred when you tried to use "magic items", not sure. Currently it works correctly, based on my tests. I hope you'll see the same :)
- map rotating... removed.
- "End of turn" (info for the hotkey) during a battle round
- Battery indicator on the main screen. Currently I can display only "good" and "low". I'm working on the % - based display, but it's undocumented.
- Gamma level and Volume indicator on the main screen.
- CTRL-S and CTRL-up/down can be used on the game screen

Thank you for your help!

I agree with the flickering feature of the objects on the ground. I Was thinking of it too because i was trying to pick some spots that looked like items but they where not :) on the other hand i was thinking of a feature that allows user to load a game saved on telephone or mmc. I mean saving different stages of the game because we need to beta test this game until the end of it. If we test only first stages until day 6 or day 10 ;) we cannot discover bugs that can appear after finishing current quests of the map. I am not sure if i got myself understood but i want to continue my game after uninstalling previous version from the point i left it and continue it after uploading new version.

Flickering: ok, I'll think about it. Maybe not in the next test version (few days).

And you don't have to uninstall the previous version to install the new one. It'll replace the old one during install, but should leave your saved games there.
But you can backup your saved games, file manager, system\apps\legacy, and copy LegacySaveX.pdb files (where X is 0-4, 0: auto-saved, 1-4: slots).

Now I have more items in my todo list! Just going to work!

The display of the gamma and sound levels is very nice.

but most importantly the nonexitent map rotation makes it much much easier. This is really much better.

Thank you!!!
Btw I really don't know why I set the map to be rotated. I thought it's better, don't ask why.

I have a small delay with the new test version, because our bunny died yesterday ;( My girlfriend is very sad ;( Just like me ;(((((((

Hi Stewe,

I'm sorry for your rabbit. Probly easter was to hard for it, bringing all the eggs?

However i'm back at work (read testing) and i have a major problem. After killing the bad guy i went to the second city. However since i missed the Ashela quest i went back via teleporter and finished it. Then teleported to the second city again.

Now comes the trouble:

while walking around in the second city every now and then i get teleported to decantres. This should not be., should it?

;(

Sirkline, it seems to be a bug...
OR, I can imagine something. Your game was registered, so you were able to go to the second city. But now, for the new version, probably you deleted the game, and deleted the LegacyCfg.pdb file, which contains the entered regcode. In this case you should enter your regcode again, in "Please Register" screen.

But... if your game is registered, but you are still teleported back to the base world, then it's a bug...

SpecialBoy: thank you! We gave him everything ;( He loved tropical fruits, although he were a real bunny.

Sorry to hear about your rabbit :( Rabbits never hurt anybody... unlike these damn spiders in the catacombs...

I like the map now that it doesn't rotate. I'm still struggling with the memory problems, and I get crashes a lot (when leaving the forest or checking the first barrel in town for example), but I'm playing with 3.2-3.3 mb free and maybe that isn't quite enough. Besides I have 3.54 firmware, which is kinda old too. The game is good though, so keep up the good work :)

Hello!

SirKline: I check it at once! It seems to be a bug. The "registry" is special in this Communicator version... called LegacyCfg.pdb. Will be fixed for next version.

Laura... Thank you. I try to work instead of getting crazy :(
Memory problems: I try to find something, which could mean less used memory. Not sure :( Maybe only the 1.06 version can be better, because I have to write this part again, for every version (palm, ppc, symbian). That's a huge work.

Thank you for your help!

Bug Report 6

Louis Lipp
Lippdinos@pobox.com

Legacy v.4

Bug ?: sound gives out when I enter help screen? (Is this normal?)

Improper naming(?): Father Asmodeus. Hm.. This does not bother me, but the name might touch a delicate note with some. Asmodeus being the overlord of all the dukes of hell and all.

Bug 1: (hiring character bug) When hiring you get the message ‘press ‘h’ again to know more..’ but nothing happens.
--

Annoying feature / Bug :(Auto save) I really like the idea that autosave does not save in the same position as the last save. It’s nice to have it as a safety backup instead of having it force overwrite on my real save. Especially since sometimes I just want to fool around without saving.

Problems:
1) I would like to have the option to quit without saving.
2) It defeats the purpose of autoload (great feature by the way) on the startup screen since it loads from the autosave and not from your last save position, which may be different.
--

Observation: In ‘Help’ menu you can see "Return" on the bottom right. It looks like the "return" corresponds to the button on the side of the screen. It took me a little time to notice that the different color of the ‘R’ in return corresponds to the keyboard and not the command button it stands next to. You might want to think about moving or changing this to make navigation more intuitive. I’m not the only silly person around J

Bug 2: characters still duplicate in the hire screen.

Bug 3: (combat) when we press ‘E’ to skip a turn in combat, both characters in the row pass their turn. Is there a way to change this so that only the selected (or active) character passes? Btw. When a character passes, does he get a ‘Guarding’ bonus for defense or does he just pass? If he does get a bonus, how about putting a ‘Guard’ option on the combat screen? Instead of the hidden ‘E’.

Bug 4: (combat) this is the bug I was telling you about in the gnome house. It has happened twice so far, but not every time I tried it. When you walk in, kill the first gnome, the second gnome (keeper) behind him engages you in combat. He is a step or two in away but you can’t move forward or run away. You seem kind of paralyzed in this screen for a while. One of the times I was able to move forward after a while the other I wasn’t.

!Bug 5: (crash) I did this several times in the same playing session before I got an error.. After I slept at the inn, I "played cards" and got the "out of memory" warning followed by a lockup followed by a crash. Message:

Kern-EXEC
3

!Bug 6: (sound crash) This only happened once all night, and once the next day (with a fresh boot). Playing cards, I got a (Kern-exec, 3) message. Game still worked fine, but without sound.

!Bug 7: (random crashes)
1) while just walking around, I got a crash: Kern-EXEC, 1. This happened twice.
2) while trying to enter the inn, out of memory msg. Crash. cmda-controller, 7. (I had 3221k free)

Odd Game Characteristics:

(combat) How come the guys in the back row can’t fight with melee weapons but they can get hit by monsters wielding the same? Plus, when both guys in the front get killed the guys in the back don’t get automatically pushed forward (neither are they allowed to attack), you have to go in and manually ‘replace’ them. Can you allow the guys in the back to attack with melee weapons automatically if both the guys in front are down?

The other way to solve this could be:
To automatically push forward the guy in the 4th position but only after both 1 and 2 get killed. I know you don’t want to push both magic users forward at the same time and the stronger one traditionally brings up the rear (4th). Just a thought.

--
Speaking of which: Is there any chance we could get the ‘Replace’ put in the ‘Main Character Screen’ instead of in the ‘Status’ screen? It’s too many button presses away and might be more intuitive that way. J

--

Obs.: I noticed that in combat I can go into my inventory, drink potions, do whatever , trade stuff, and still have time to attack. Don’t know if this is worth changing really, seems to fit the game pretty well. Just wanted to let you know about.

--
(Inventory spell book) You cannot cast spells from the inventory spell book while in combat.
--
In stores around the city I noticed you can only sell stuff that is related to what the store is selling. What do you think about not showing the items in the inventory that you can’t sell to that store (value 0)?

On other notes:

Stewe: I think that mapping the ‘X’ key from the Adventure Screen would be a great idea, but it does not substitute a hotkey for saving. We still have to press 8 keys to save the game and more to get back to the adventure screen. How bout a <Ctrl> +1 or something?
Actually, here are my thoughts on the matter. The only thing that I think is really necessary from the list below is a hotkey from the adventure screen to the save screen, but if you want to make the game really have some nice features, how about this:
<Ctrl>+1 QuickSave - will save game in last position saved but without changing screens
<Ctrl>+4 Shortcut to save – will send you to save screen
<Ctrl>+6 Shortcut to load – will send you to load screen

I really liked the volume/gama /battery indicators, thanks! I’m glad you left them on the title screen, anywhere else might have taken some of the fantasy feel from the game. Especially since we don’t need to keep a constant eye on them.

Since you are taking suggestions J

On loading: it would be really nice if when you got into the loading or save screen, the cursor automatically would highlight the most recent save. (this isn’t necessarily the same as the one with the greatest time frame, but it would be really special if you could manage that.)
--

One thing that is not really necessary, but would really be useful: (DragonFire really, really needed this feature). Some X:00, Y:00 coordenates near the map. They could be map dependant so one would not start counting where the other map left off, each map (city or east forest, etc.) would just have their own. This would make it soooo much easier to find those hard to get to places in the middle of nowhere, or "where was that quest guy again?"
--
TheSpecialboy has a point on the training. I think that it would be a neat idea but not essential. Maybe one of us could get the editor and make a little training adventure with lot’s of signs to read and people to talk to on the way. A pop up message here or there maybe. I think that would solve it. As for the cards… I really don’t think it is that hard to figure out. A little help screen with the pictures of the cards and some basic explanations might be nice, but some things are fun to figure out for yourself as well. I can go either way. Not necessary for an alpha release.

--

The Bless spell description: the original text is:
"Improves the damage taken by enemies in combat"
What you said is correct, but it might be more clear if we changed it to:

"Increases the damage you cause to your enemies in combat."

or

"Allows your party to cause more damage in combat."

Question: is it only physical damage or does it also improve magical damage. In addition to that, does the spell improve your chances to hit? If so we may need to change the description. Also, is there any information you want to mention about time of effect? Such as, will the spell last for a single combat no matter how long or will it last an hour per level of caster, etc. etc.

Well, huh! What a long message!
Thank you... I check them all now:

- music: I stop the music when you leave the main screen, except "start new game". It's because the music requires a lot of memory...

- Asmodeus: I can change it if you really want... btw I don't know what does it mean... it was made by our brain, probably we saw it somewhere (fantasy book?)

- Hiring, 'h': that should select the first character, so his/her stats can be seen. I check the shortcut.

- Auto-save: yea, by design. The auto-save slot is the 0, LegacySave0.pdb. In the next version, saving is dramatically faster, half second (or max 1 second)

- Quit without auto-save: I think it's not so important, since (as you said, too) the auto-save is a backup thing, not a real slot.

- Auto-load: you can simply press 'no', and load your manually saved games. I don't think a menu could be a good solution for this screen (since this screen doesn't have slot information at all, it's a different, load/save modul). The main screen knows only the 0 is the auto-save, and tries to detect whether it exists or not.

- Return button on help screen: in my list... I plan to put the button at the center/bottom.

- Character duplication: it's a sneaky bug, I need more investigations. But will be fixed in the next test version...

- The Guarding function can be a new one... the E can be useful when you don't want to do anything with your other characters. For example: a monster is approaching, you cast spells by your mage, but can't do anything with your other chars. Currently the game doesn't have 'guard' functionality. I think I don't want to modify the main game code, because it's balanced and stable (the errors are in the Communicator part, or in a main part because of a Communicator feature). This can be a good item in the 1.06 version.

- Gnome thing: it's a bug, yes. Happened on more devices. Not sure why, I'll check it deeply.

- Crash, sleep, card game: maybe because of sleep, it's in my todo list. There can be a bug there (in the fade routine!?)

- Sound crash while playing with cards: I won't stop until I can re-create this problem! I can imagine it, but can't find the problem in the code by my imagination.

- MAYBE: you have a bit low execution memory... could you make a bit more ? Or 3305 is the max ? The game can be more stable with ~3500 free. It's in my list, with high priority. I have to decrease the needed memory by a few hundred kilobytes.

- Automatically move: not sure. Because: you could move one of them to the 1st line, instead of both of them.
And the monsters can't hit characters in the 2nd row, if they're front of you. Of course the game calculates the attackable members by melee attack from a direction... if they're back, then they can attack characters in the 2nd line.
Well, I'll think about this, but I don't like the automatical things (some should be in the game, for comfort, I agree).

- Replace, Main Characters Screen: ok.

- Drink during combat: yea, by design. We had to think about players with less (or none) rpg experience. Pda market isn't large enough to release a "strong" rpg (for example pc and console market are big enough :p)

- Inventory spell book: it's just a reference, for information. I can't simply switch back to game screen to cast a spell at once... that's why you have a game-screen-spellbook with 'c'.

- Not showing items: I don't agree or just partially. This could lead to support emails (from the unexperinced rpg players...): where are my items? They're missing.

- save/load shortcuts: the X is in the new version now... other shortcuts: ok, it's a new todo item... why ctrl-4 and ctrl-6 ?

- load screen, highlight: it's a small thing, I can make it, 5 minutes. However, I don't think it's so important :p

- xx,yy: well... we included the place info in the quest descriptions, and you can see the red small point where npcs are standing. The xx,yy can be done.

- training: the truth is we planned that more users need forums to play with the game at 100% efficiency. That's a kind of self-marketing (when more forums are dedicated to Legacy). A trainer map is a good idea.

- Bless description: ok!
And the "bless" can only help you in melee attack, in every rpg. And, the most important thing: mages will be the far most strong characters later! When they will have hundreds of spell points and their lightning bolt spell cause >100 damage. You'll see that.
Ah yes, another thing: the curse spell. It's important for melee, and for magical attacks, too. A cursed monster will receive more damage.

- In the inventory's spellbook, you can see that the damage/time effect *by your current character*. It's not linear, and based on class, level, intelligence level, and so on. Check the spell descriptions...

Thank you for your help!

And thank you for your words about our bunny. We miss him so much :(

When i want to sell some items like clothes or weapons i got a 0 value for them and i cannot sell them. What am i supposed to do with them ? Drop it ? Next: when entering the sell items i should not be able to sell the item wear by the character. And second i guess listing items that has nothing to do with the store we are in is useless and makes no sense to browse clothes if i want to sell weapons

Hello!

Forgive me, Specialboy, Lipp, I may don't give high priority for some small new features you requested... I think when I have serious items in my todo list, then I have to work on them. For example: memory.
And, don't forget, I have to collect todo items for the next version, too! Without this, I could apply modifications until Christmas. The game isn't so simple, I think you can always try new todo items :p

However, I agree with most of your suggestions!

Hi Stewe, (inserted!)

> Well, huh! What a long message!

Yeah, I’m sorry about that. I was on a roll :D Luckily most of it was my babbling not errors.

ok, just checking.

> Asmodeus: I can change it if you really want... btw I don't know what does it

It doesn’t bother me at all. I’m just doing my job letting you know what you might be in for :) I wouldn’t worry about it for now. Most religious fanatics probably won’t recognize the name anyway.

>Quit without auto-save: I think it's not so important, since (as you said, too) the auto
>save is a backup thing, not a real slot.
> Auto-load: you can simply press 'no', and load your manually saved games. I don't

Ok, sorry, it took me a minute to understand what you had in mind. Please ignore what I suggested about no autosave on exit or menus for loading on startup.

Bug: What threw me off is that I found a bug (this happened twice so far) when I tried to autoload, the game actually started at a point before my last save. That made me think that the autosave was not the same as the save when exit.

> The Guarding function can be a new one... the E can be useful when you don't want to

I was actually just curious about it. I agree that it is not worth compromising good code for a not so relevant modification. I still find it annoying that ‘E’ skips more than one character though, but it’s nothing we can’t work around.

>MAYBE: you have a bit low execution memory... could you make a bit more ? Or
>3305 is the max ? The game can be more stable with ~3500 free. It's in my list, with

I’ll use more memory from now on. I was only running 3305 because I wanted to beta test under conditions that your target consumers will most likely be using. The game does recommend 3.2megs ;). Just trying to cover your back. Most people, (like me, until you taught me how :D) won’t know how to free so much memory.

>Automatically move: not sure. Because: you could move one of them to the 1st line,
>instead of both of them.

It just seems unfair, because once the guys in the front fall, the guys in the back can get hit (as if they were in front) but they can’t hit back unless we re-order them.

Unless you want to do something really, really impractical like:
"If both front characters were slain, the 4th position (4th position because the stronger of the back characters usually brings up the rear) could pop forward…" (I don’t honestly expect something like this to be implemented)

… It might be better to just allow the guys in back to behave like front fighters unless one of them re-orders to take the lead.

I know my mind works in disturbing ways. ;)

>Well, I'll think about this, but I don't like the automatical things (some should be in the
>game, for comfort, I agree).

I agree. I wouldn’t mention it if my characters didn’t drop like flies. I’m sure in higher levels this isn’t much of an issue so you might want to ignore this all together. Especially now that you are going to put ‘Replace’ in an easier to reach place.

>And the monsters can't hit characters in the 2nd row, if they're front of you. Of course
>the game calculates the attackable members by melee attack from a direction... if they're

Ok, this was an oversight of my part. My bad.

>Drink during combat: yea, by design. We had to think about players with less (or none)
>rpg experience.

Agreed. The game is balanced with it though and it works nicely.

>Inventory spell book: it's just a reference, for information. I can't simply switch back to
>game screen to cast a spell at once... that's why you have a game-screen-spellbook with 'c'.

I actually knew that, but it’s still our duty to point out things that may confuse some of your customers as well as giving error reports. No matter how much grief this might cause to the poor, unsuspecting programmer 8D
Just pick through what’s useful, no biggie J

>Not showing items: I don't agree or just partially. This could lead to support emails
>(from the unexperinced rpg players...): where are my items? They're missing.

Ok, I see what you mean. You are going to get the support emails anyway, unless you at least replace the ‘0gp’ with an ‘X’ or ‘can’t sell here’.

> save/load shortcuts: the X is in the new version now... other shortcuts: ok, it's a new
>todo item... why ctrl-4 and ctrl-6 ?

Sweet! Well,
1) I thought of Ctrl-1 for the QuickSave because the player could press it without changing the way he’s holding the communicator, so it would be faster and easier and with only one hand. It would also be hard to press by mistake. Maybe ctrl-0 would be a better shortcut.
2) Ctrl-4 and ctrl-6, because they were far enough apart that one might have to use different hands to press them. It might reduce the grief of pressing the wrong button and saving instead of loading. Lots of the old game companies used to do it this way come to think about it, like Sierra and Id, if I’m not mistaken.

If you are really going to implement it, we could put it up to vote, maybe?

>load screen, highlight: it's a small thing, I can make it, 5 minutes. However, I
>don't think it's so important :p

Well, it’s not, now that I understand the logic behind the autoload option at startup. (as I said, mine was buggy) That, coupled with the autosave feature will make it unnecessary.

> xx,yy: well... we included the place info in the quest descriptions, and you can
>see the red small point where npcs are standing. The xx,yy can be done.

Understood. On second thought, the maps are small enough to not really need the x,y especially with the red points. I also failed to notice you could scroll the map on the full map screen. Doh! ;P
I really would urge you to put it in the next DragonFire game though J with a map that big it is really hard finding a pinpoint spot like the apple tree.

> Bless description: ok!
>And the "bless" can only help you in melee attack, in every rpg. And, the most
>important thing: mages will be the far most strong characters later! When they will have
>hundreds of spell points and their lightning bolt spell cause 100 damage. You'll see that.
>Ah yes, another thing: the curse spell. It's important for melee, and for magical attacks,
>too. A cursed monster will receive more damage.

Ok, (on bless) Although it is customary, not every rpg ‘bless’ spell raises only melee damage dished out. I thought it was worth double-checking just in case.

As for ‘curse’ I’m a little confused now. I’m reading the description and it states:
"Curse: Lowers the damage and defense of an enemy"

I interpret what you just told me as: "curse will raise both physical and magical damage received by the enemy."

But my understanding from the spell description is: "reduces the damage the enemy can cause to you and lowers his defense as well."

Can you clarify this for me?

> In the inventory's spellbook, you can see that the damage/time effect *by your current
>character*. It's not linear, and based on class, level, intelligence level, and so on. Check
>the spell descriptions...

I did. I didn’t find anything regarding this other than what I wrote as your previous description. This might be because I was checking the description of scrolls at the time since my characters didn’t know the spell.

>And thank you for your words about our bunny. We miss him so much :(

Any chance we could see a picture of the little guy? I don’t want to push on a touchy subject if it bothers you, but my girlfriend is really into animals and is bugging me to find out more about him!

Hi!

I don't include your one, it would a 2-page message!

First of all... bunny pictures ;( ...I started to cry... these are older pictures, and his left eye was healthy on these pictures. It was so diseased, before he died
;(((((((((((((
http://www.redshift.hu/stewe/nyuszi01.jpg
(and increase 01 to 12)
Half a day earlier there was a burial service ;(

(5 minutes later, after a cigarette)

some things from your message:

- Autosave: it happens only when exit... I really don't call that routine, except in "exit" routine. So... you may saved your game before exit. In this case the auto-save and your real save can be almost the same.

- Memory: I decided to develop a new version, with much lower needed memory. But! (and I need your opinion): the new version can be a bit slower. Because: Now I pre-render every picture in every distance, so the drawing is fast, because I don't have to dynamically draw&resize at the same time (just draw). It needs more memory, of course. For the new version, I could develop optimized drawing routines, these can draw&resize (but takes at least 1 MB less execution memory!). What do you think? It can be a few days work, I would have to optimize fully the new drawing routines.

- To allow the characters in 2nd line to attack when the first ones are died: it's absolutely logical, I agree. Will be done!
(You were right - it won't be useful later... you characters won't die at all, I'm sure)

- The "can't sell here" doesn't fit into the small space... and I don't have the abc characters in the raster font (the items' prices are with a special font). Not so important, I think. But yes, we had and will have emails about this... from new players, since they'll know it later, although they won't have later such items, or just a few.

- Dragonfire: we plan a sequel... with a free world editor, 10x larger base world, sub-maps, just like Legacy.

- Bless: I think you're "blessed" when a mage cast a bless on you (in rpg). That means *higher* chance to attack succesfully, and higher chance to apply more damage. With spells, it's a different thing, without physical connection.
Based on this, yes, I could make the bless to work with spells, too. I shouldn't have to! Because of the mage characters, they're the strongest ones!
There are more players who finished the game only with a single mage/battlemage!!! They had a level 24 mage after the finish.
I have a saved game from the end, if you're interested!

- Curse: you're right. This can be because of our English, and other players on other platforms didn't have a mood to mention this :p
Note: the text must be short enough for the spell descriptions. Without this, I may have to include the fixed one in the Communicator version only... (for example ppc has only 320x240 resolution)

I don't have too much mood to work during this weekend :(
Maybe I'll have a new version days later.

Regards,
Stewe

The bunny is adorable, I can understand your pain. :((( I have three cats myself and I can't imagine ever being able to let them go... :((( So take your time with the game, there are other things in life that are important too.

But when you get back to work, making the memory requirements more manageable would be my suggestion. I'm frustrated when I sometimes can't save, can't open all barrels (the first one in Decrantes for example always crashes my game), can't open doors (haven't been to the inn yet because the game crashes at the door) etc. without the Kern Exec #3. 3.3 mb does not seem to be enough and I'm getting nowhere with this. I know I should format and all to free more memory but is it realistic to assume 'regular' players do that every time? (I am not a pro in rpgs or any of the techical stuff myself, so these are 'layman's comments').

If you keep the memory requirements at this level, the users would need simple instructions on how to free more memory, and that may not be possible... Formatting is not a simple operation. Of course in the future communicators (9500) this is probably not a problem anymore. The crude and slow version for the old devices and the faster one for the future devices maybe?

Btw I've been playing the version you gave in Comm4.zip.

Try to enjoy your weekend Stewe :)

Hi!

First of all... bunny pictures ;(

My girlfriend: 'Oh, he's so cute.' I think you should definitly set him some kind of memorial in the game.

- Autosave: it happens only when exit... I really don't call that routine, except in "exit" routine. So... you may saved your game before exit. In this case the auto-save and your real save can be almost the same.

But one thing that might be handy would be to be able load the autosave from the menu, not just on starting the game.

Sounds like a good idea to me. Maybe we should try it and see whether less performance is a big issue compared to lesser RAM needed.

Maybe you could give the startitems a value of 1? So they could be sold but it would not make profit.

- Dragonfire: we plan a sequel... with a free world editor, 10x larger base world, sub-maps, just like Legacy.

This is great news.

<snip>

I don't have too much mood to work during this weekend :(
Maybe I'll have a new version days later.

Regards,
Stewe

Anyway, much thanks for your fast improvements regarding our concerns and sugestions.
If you want me to, i would try to make a tutorial map. However i fear that it would be a bit communicator specific since i don't play another version and i don't know the differences.

Hi!

More answers...

Laura: thank you... the truth is We shouldn't be selfish. He would have serious pains without the surgery - and it seems his small body wasn't strong enough during that surgery :(
We're going to go to the cemetary today, too...
Currently We aren't strong enough to believe it was the best for him, but that's the truth.
- Memory: it's the most important thing. Communicator is fast enough to handle the dynamic resize during drawing, so it's the best method. The needed memory will be decreased dramatically -> around middle of the week.

SirKline: thank you... yes, I'm thinking about something like this, a memorial.
- Auto-save from the menu (load/save screen): yes, it's a good idea. I can put a 5th slot on the load/save screen.
- Memory: the speed depends on the optimization. I may have to rewrite that routine several times, to be fast enough. I have ideas for this task, maybe I should use Arm assembly on Communicator, but it's very hard.
- new items, gold=1: brilliant idea!!!
- tutorial map: thank you!!! with the editor, you can't make Communicator-specific maps... all of the versions use the same "inner-game-code", and they're absolutely compatible. A note, but probably you won't try it: You can beam a saved game from Palm or Ppc or Communicator, to another Palm/Ppc/Communicator. If you send it from a Communicator to a Palm, then the target device will simply accept it, and you can play with your saved game. It's tested, the compatibility is 100%.
(Same for downloaded maps!)

- SpecialBoy: if you got that key after beating N'Gora, then you should see a keyhole on the opposite wall (from the shelf). After opening it, there's a teleporter, and that's the shareware/release border! If you don't have a regcode, then please send me your IMEI, but please check if the game successfully blocks you at the teleporter.

Thank you for your help!

Hi Stewe,

found another bug, the priority of the background fire in the nightly inn in the 2. city is higher than the hireling screens, so the fire will appear in front of the hireling's head.

And about the tut map. Already started to layout a map but i haven't found out how to place an NPC (or another object) on a wall. Short hint please?

Hi!

SpecialBoy, I have sent your regcode via pm. Thank you for your help!

SirKline:
- inn anim: thank you! It's in my list now...
- editor: it's because of the lack of documentation. You need to hold down SHIFT, then you can select a wall on the map. Now if you have a selected "wall object" (at right), then you can press space to put it down.
Another thing: please open and examine the Morah map. You can see a teleport at the beginning... type: circle teleport, inner type: "back to connection", object name: "STARTGAME". You need to create a similar teleport, without it the game would simply skip your world!
- register limit: cool!!!

Thank you for your help!

Another thing: I have planned the new architecture (on paper), which will require less memory. It seems I *have* to work endlessly, instead of thinking about our bunny :(((

Oh No! Not another bug bible from Lippdinos! ;)
I know I can get longwinded on these reports. I’ve been QA’ing for a while and it turns into a habit. Don’t feel you have to respond all at once, I’m just trying to be complete when I can. (If you think these are bad you should see some of the 15 page ‘bug only’ reports I used to submit to AOL and Fantasoft.) :D

Bug Report 7
18-4-4
Louis Lipp
Lippdinos@pobox.com

Legacy V.4
3550k free

Old Bug: I have been thinking about what you said about my not running with enough memory. I noticed that when I use more memory I still get the same problems (random crashes just by walking around, sleeping at an inn, ‘out of memory’ messages, etc.) but it might take longer to happen. Logic dictates that the memory is getting polluted and sooner or later will crash no matter how much free ram you have. Could the cleanup functions be malfunctioning?

Bug 1: I am getting crashes when I quit. Very consistent error. Eikon-listbox #5.

Items…: I don’t understand why some items cost 0. Sometimes I have two identical daggers in my inventory but one will sell for 0 and the other for 60, at the same shop, at the same time. I have several items that the store wont offer more than 0 for, like swords, warhammers, etc. Why?
If ‘won’t sell here’ doesn’t fit over the item, how about drawing a big red ‘X’ over the items you can’t sell at that store. Here’s another idea: I remember one game I used to play only displayed items you could sell but you could see a shortcut on the screen that would ‘Show non salable items too.’

Quest items: Can you make it harder or impossible to drop quest items? At least a warning ‘you cannot finish the game without this item silly!’

Bug 2: Battery indicator always says ‘good’ no matter how low it is.

Bug 3: I was caught in combat with the last guy standing being equipped with a bow. He could not attack since he ran out of arrows but he could not switch weapons ‘because he was in combat’.

Characteristic: I may be wrong about this, but I did not notice any way to do it.
When you are fighting more than one foe, can you choose whom you are going to hit? It makes more sense to finish one enemy off instead of just hitting both.

Hm?: Do MP’s and HP’s regenerate over time?

Hm.2: I’m not sure if I mentioned this, when in the spellbook (combat, not reference), you cannot switch to another user by pressing 1-4.

Observations:

On SirKline’s idea: (autosave) It is a neat idea to be able to load from the auto-save position inside the game (or else you would have to quit and run the game again to do it), but I suggest you not allow us to save there. It would defeat the purpose of autosave. As it is, the 5th spot would be overwritten on exit anyway so it’s hardly a safe place to save a game.

Come to think of it, right now, AutoSave is only useful to get you into the game quicker. It’s not really a backup device. I think we need to re-think it’s purpose before we change anything else.

--
SirKline: Maybe you could give the startitems a value of 1? So they could be sold but it would not make profit.
Stewe: - new items, gold=1: brilliant idea!!!

I really, strongly disagree with this one. It would create more confusion that it’s worth. Since we are constantly thinking about the novice player, this feature would really annoy them until they could figure out they had to go to the other shops. Either make the items non salable or don’t list them, selling them for less will just be really annoying for everyone.
Crap. Actually we are ignoring the easy way out. Just type a ‘–‘ or an ‘x’ in the price box. That should be easy enough to figure out and would not require any change big change in the programming. If you really want to get fancy with this (and still be lazy) you could re-order the items in the store view (only) so that you list the items the store wants to buy first, followed by all the others with the ‘-‘ or ‘x’ in the price square. Everyone will get the clue that way. A ‘NS’ for ‘No Sale’ will probably be easy to guess too. But please don’t let us sell mega items for a gp by mistake!
You would have another problem with that too, the items would end up in the store inventory ;) I wonder what price they would take on then.

On the store subject: Another idea for the future could be a general store. They buy everything for a lower price and sell for a higher price.
Perhaps even a pawn shop, that way you could sell items for a lower price but they would stay there so you could buy them back later.
--

Stewe : Memory: I decided to develop a new version, with much lower needed memory. But! (and I need your opinion): the new version can be a bit slower.
(but takes at least 1 MB less execution memory!). What do you think? It can be a few days work, I would have to optimize fully the new drawing routines.

Well, I would really hate to see performance go, I have to admit the game right now, is only a little bit past the slow side.
I have to agree with Laura though, almost nobody has 3.2megs of free memory and even less will be willing to reset their communicators just to test this new game. To be honest with you it took me ages to be able to get 1 meg of free space (before I got my memory card) to be able to finally make space for DragonFire. (It was well worth it, but still,.. you have to run it once to find out.) From a customer’s standpoint, It’s already a tough decision to turn off all my communicator functions (including telephone), to run it. I sure as heck wouldn’t reset my device just to ‘try’ a game that one may or may not like.
Unless you want endless requests for assistance, (since most people would probably write you or give up way before reading a forum. At least until they got into the game), I think rewriting may be the only way out.

--

Questions:

1) Speaking of which, is there any way to recharge magic devices?
Suggestion for the future: How about a way to split and join quivers of (compatible) arrows. (very useful!!)

2) Are there any plans for the future to be able to replace the character portraits with our own custom pictures? Just seems to make sense since so many portables now a days have built in cameras.. J

--

I was checking out the description for legacy on your site.
I think you are downplaying a big point on not letting people know they can create AND SELL, new maps for this game with the free editor. Let them know they can create their own IMEI dependant (or whatever) codes and the interest on making new adventures will soar!! I’m guessing this is true, right? People won’t be able to edit the maps you create?
Oh, is the expansion pack already built into the communicator version?

--

- Dragonfire: we plan a sequel... with a free world editor, 10x larger base world, sub-maps, just like Legacy.

When is this going to come out anyway?
You know, the thing I think I liked most about dragonfire is that it had that ‘classic’ rpg feel to it, the same way that Ultima or some of the others did.

You didn’t sacrifice quality just to make it look ‘3D’ish’ it also didn’t have that grainy look (that is so prevalent in today’s games, who knows why.)
You could probably just make another map for the thing and sell it again!

--
Confusion on the horizon!

Wait, so you mean that bless increases ‘to hit’ and ‘damage’ then?

I agree, btw, that it doesn’t have to raise the benefits of magic, I was just trying to clarify.

There are more players who finished the game only with a single mage/battlemage!!! They had a level 24 mage after the finish.
I have a saved game from the end, if you're interested!

Sweet! Well, let me see what my character looks like by then, I like some surprises

- Curse: you're right. This can be because of our English, and other players on other platforms didn't have a mood to mention this :p
Note: the text must be short enough for the spell descriptions. Without this, I may have to include the fixed one in the Communicator version only... (for example ppc has only 320x240 resolution)

Well, it’s not worth making the communicator version different until all the others are fixed. Let me know how many character spaces we have to write the descriptions in the other versions and we can try to make one for all of them.
! I still need you to clarify on the effect of curse though, and now on bless again.

--

First of all... pictures ;(
I don't have too much mood to work during this weekend :(
Maybe I'll have a new version days later.

Your bunny is absolutely gorgeous! Not a problem, my friend. Take all the time in the world.

I think i might be misunderstood here. I was talking about the problem that the start weapons and armors had a value of 0. I was not talking about selling every thing in every shop. You would have to go to the weapon shop and armor shop to sell them there anyway. But at least you could sell them (and they could be vanished after that, nobody would buy their start things back anyway).

I see what you mean now.
:) I think those values are actually bug wrong though. I mentioned in an earlier post that you occasionally find identical objects with different prices which doesn't seem right. As for starting weapons and armor, it would be nice if you could sell them and use part of the cash to pay for your new stuff. By the time you are second level 1gp won't really make a difference anyway. For 1gp I'd rather just carry them around as dead weight instead of finding rocks to drop on panels in the dungeons.

Hi!

Oh no! Another long Lipp message!!! :|

MOST IMPORTANT THING!!!
I have a new version!!! Not 100% done, but it requires 500 KB less execution memory. The new free execution memory requirement can be 2.9 MB (or 3 MB to be sure). And... the game isn't slower, I improved the new routines several times during the day. I can upload it tomorrow. Of course it contains several new features/developed suggestions. Not all of them! Sorry.

Now I try to provide answers... *huh*

Lipp:
- memory: I don't think the game has memory leaks... the main parts' source code is the same on pc/palm/ppc/symbian. Although I can imagine something: fragmentation... when large free memory blocks are going to be smaller and smaller over time. It's a high priority item for tomorrow.
- Eikon-listbox: it's strange... and it's not Legacy-specific thing, must be a background task. Because Legacy doesn't use *any* operating system controls, such as listbox. Idea: Task Manager has Eikon-listbox! I'll check it tomorrow, although I have never seen something like this on our device.
- items with 0 price: maybe we all give too much time for this small thing...:
- normal price for starting items: you could hire every character, get the items, and sell them
- price 1g: can be, I think it's good. But doesn't important
- price 0g: maybe it's good as it is. Logical: the starting equipment of the characters are low quality ones...
- quest items: it's not a huge problem! Because if you lose an important quest item, and can't find it, then you go back to that map (where you found it) after 5 days, and that map is reseted. All the monsters, all the items. This "lost quest item" problem almost never occurs, based on support emails.
- battery indicator: oops. There are several ways to check the battery status, I'll try to use a different method.
- I don't think I should allow changing weapons during combat... but you can equip a new quiver. In your situation, you can use a scroll, for example.
- Select attack target: will be done in one of the future versions. Now I don't want to touch that part of the game! Stability risk (would be a serious modification). Now: left player hits left monster...
- hp, sp regeneration: shouldn't be, because of the game's existing balance. With regeneration, the game would be easier!
- spellbook, change user: will be done in next version
- auto-slot: I think it's not so important... however loading the auto-save manually can be useful sometimes, I agree. Don't know... lower priority.
- the memory problem is solved, but means only -500 KB needed execution memory. I hope it's enough. Without slower speed!
- recharge, merge, picture...: future!
- the editor is still in beta-testing phase... I have less time for this, because of the Communicator version. And yes, they can sell the maps, but the price should be discussed with us (should, not must). And we don't want share. The base game and the expansion pack were made only with that editor. Our maps are protected, you can't modify them in the editor (can't save them). Without this, you could remove the protection...
- Expansion Pack: it's a standalone file, MissPack.pdb, which can be downloaded for the Communicator! But it's connected to the 3rd city, and requires level 15+ characters. (Tough!)
- Dragonfire: no, it's not the quality and size we want to release nowadays. Our games must be large, well-written, award-winner :p, and so on... Df should be much larger, we got many negative reports about the size (they were right!). And... the Df Communicator was our first game at all... now I have much more experience (which can be seen between Df and Legacy)
- I can't tell you number of characters... our raster fonts have variable character widths. And longer words can easily mess the planned view.

Thank you!
We're still very sad with my girlfriend :(

SirKline:
- auto-save and 0/1 problem: maybe they aren't too important... and maybe I won't have time for them, sorry. As you can see on our page, I said the Communicator version will be released until 15th April.

Lipp:
- regcode info: fixed in the new version
- normal price: as I have said... you could hire them all and get their equipment!

We always forgetting our startup point. This game targets 9210i and 9500. Me personally did not found major bugs anymore. Just fine tuning issues that we can dispute and debate until summer (when new commi will be launched ;) ) let's do a recap of the open and unsolved issues coz honestly i am loosing you guys. :) i will wait for the low memory version of the game but until them i'll test him as it is. Well, you're right!!!
I'm really interested in these smaller suggestions, *every* of them can make the game a bit better. However, probably I don't have time for them all...
The game should be released asap, I have more and more emails because of the announced deadline 15th April.

ok, granted that it’s very rare, but I was caught in a situation where I couldn’t re-equip, run away or cast spells. It’s one for the record.

hello there, just downloaded the latest build LegacyComm4.zip as per stewes instruction via the email he sent.

A couple of observations.
Is it possible to use the command buttons on the right hand side of the screen to select the characters instead of 1/2/3/4. It just seems easier to me.

Also is it possible to use the menu functions such as Items/Spells/Quests/X-menu via the main screen instead of bringing up the properties of a character and then getting to these functions

I mean if I am in the middle of a game and I quickly want to exit or save the game I have to load the properites of a character then select the option I want so I press 1 then press X for menu then quit...or am I doing something wrong.

I am using a 9210i v6. After a reboot I have 3.78mb ram free, the game works fine no problems whatsoever with this amount of ram free. Even with desk/tel/messaging/contacts/extra loaded the game still works fine for me

So far the game has been rock solid but I have only played for about an hour :-)

EDIT
Is it possible or in the future to add notes to the map, so we know what bit is where and where to go for the next time...

Also can we delete the saved games from within the programme, for example when we go to load a game, can we have an option to delete a saved game aswell...

Small misprint: just in case this wasn’t on purpose When we take on the bartender’s spider quest he tells us to look for a passage in the South East part of town. The passage is actually South West.

Bug: started a new adventure, (nothing running in background as far as I know, 3674k free, v4) just walking around the city, I got this crash: ncnlist; kern-exec; 3.

XP observation: I know this isn’t an error but it might cause some unnecessary grief.
When you are running an unregistered game and finally earn enough xp to pass level 6: Instead of your level just not going up, you are actually loosing the extra xp points that would push you to next lvl. It might be more attractive if we could stockpile the xp so that when we purchase the reg-code we could use the points to level.

Hello!

Some answers, but then... then... a NEW VERSION!!! You'll like that!!!

Lipp: the Eikon thing is important... I have the Task Manager, too, but never crashes after exit from Legacy.

Imran:
- character selection: not sure... of course I could handle them, but the whole game is designed for keys only. I marked it with less priority, because it's a comfort thing, if I'm right.
- Spells,Quests with right buttons: it's for comfort, too... but not a bad idea! I would like to have a stable version first. In the new version, I have developed some comfort things, but they had luck. I was just there, in the source code.
- You can press X on the game screen, which takes you to the main menu! So: X-E-Enter-Enter and you're out.
- Cool you have so much memory... the Comm4 test version still required ~3.4 MB, but the new one needs ~2.8 :) But I set it to 3 MB, to be sure, for stability (Memory check at startup).
- Notes on map: yes, I have this in my todo list, for 1.06 version, which will be released for Palm, Ppc, Communicator, P800. Probably a month later.
- Why do you need to delete a saved game? They can be overwritten easily. For space? They aren't large, just ~50 KB (or ~80 KB with the Expansion Pack).
- I have sent you the code!

Lipp:
- Wow! That description was inserted later... because we got reports, when players can't find the passage. It'll be corrected for the next version (will be uploaded in an hour or two).
- Bug: I can't imagine it, really. Let's try the next version, more things changed.
- XP: you don't lose the Xp! I mean you shouldn't!!! Are you sure ?

Thank you for your help!

Hello!

Maybe I should upload the new version tomorrow. I have one technical problem now: the sound! It's not a new problem, please check this: if you wait for at least 3 secs anywhere, and then you're trying to make something that should we sound... sometimes the sound is incorrect/missing. Not sure why... maybe a sound hardware timeout.
I'll work on this problem this night, and tomorrow.

Hello folks

Stewe, the reg code that you sent me via pm doesnt work :-( keeps saying invalid code...

The reason I suggested if we could delete saved games is purely from completeness, I agree that they take very little space, I have the game installed on my mmc so space is not that big an issue, just it makes the entire load/save bit of the game complete if you can delete a saved game aswell, although I would agree that this isnt really a high priority, i think it is more of a comfort thing, if you know what I mean

It's in my list now, but yes, with low priority. Can be a bit dangerous, when someone accidentally deletes a saved game.

Regcode: I have to create the regcode from the imei string: "xxxxxx-xx-xxxxxx-x",
but I forgot to insert "-" into your imei. As you see on the reg screen, the game uses the full form with "-", because Handango uses the same, and the other distributors, too. I have to remember: 6-2-6-1, just like in tennis.

Also, everytime I try to play on the second town and further, for example in Beraquel Forest or Giant cave, the game drops me back to the town of decrantes with the following message

Registration error: you shouldnt be there.

In order to get it working I enter the code again and then it lets me play.

Extra xp erased? NO! My mistake! I was calculating wrong, big oops again. X-P

Stewe: You can press X on the game screen, which takes you to the main menu!
Really? This doesn’t work for me.

notes on map & menu shortcuts sweet!

…command buttons on the right hand side of the screen to select the characters
I personally wouldn’t like using the command buttons for a common task. I would have to change the way I hold the device while playing to use them.

AC defensive bonus Yes, some items make a difference, some don’t (ac:0) why it shows is anyone’s guess. These points accumulate and add to the dexterity bonus, etc. The higher the number the more protected you are against physical attacks.

Card game levels?: Hm. Just noticed this, is there any way we can tell what our level or xp at this is or do we just level when we win against a higher level player?

Louis

Question to all: I know this isn’t really the right place for it but all the sources seem to contradict themselves. Do any of you have memory cards greater than 128megs? I really want to find out if it’s really safe to use a larger card and up to what size. 128megs is already feeling cramped and Stacker is way too slow :(

Hello!

I have the new version now! Will be uploaded (really) in half an hour!

Now the answers...

- regcode: please check this with the new version... there was a bug with storing the registration key you entered. It's ok now at me, tried many times.
- AC: Sirkline and Lipp are right!
- "you shouldn't be there": it's a kind of protection... as you know, the game blocks you at the teleporter, after killing N'Gora. But! What if someone doesn't buy the game, but gets a saved game from the 2nd city? That's why the game checks the registered state sometimes, and teleports you back to the first city. It won't happen when the game can store the registration code correctly.
- X from game screen: in the new one!
- Card game levels: it's a kind of surprise, we never published this :p Probably nobody expects new features from the card game in the 2nd town.
But! In the 3rd town, you can reach the 3rd level in card game... that means 80hp. And the bet will be 1000 gold.

Now: compile, copy to device, quick tests, upload! I'll be back

DONE.

http://www.redshift.hu/stewe/LegacyComm5.zip

Changes:
- up to 3 MB used execution memory. For me, once happened when the game required a little more than 3 MB (3.05). The game checks the memory at startup.
- New displaying method - sometimes I feel the 1st city looks better (specially the walls, from a distance... 2,3 ?).
- the install and the installed game size is bigger now... that's because the standalone wav files, in 16 bit sound, for stability (Sound subdirectory in Legacy installation directory)
- Faster save game!!!
- Saves correctly the registration info
- updated Help for Communicator... probably needs checking! English/Logical.
- Help screen - Return button - centered
- Removed battery indicator - I'm searching for methods on the net, but it seems nobody knows how to read the battery status from the device.
- Fixed character duplication bug in taverns/hire
- Taverns/hire: "press h to know more" -> "h" key selects the first character.
- 2nd city, tavern - fixed animation
- fixed "bless" description
- characters in the 2nd line can attack when others in the 1st line are dead.
- X key on the game screen

STILL PROBLEM:
- charger/other events while playing: they're ok on our device... the game received back the focus after a while, without crash/freeze. And on your device ?
- sound: as I have said, sometimes the sound is incorrect if you wait for at least 3 seconds. Now I included a 0.2 sec silence (a delay) before playing a new sound, but if the last one was more than 3 seconds ago.
- Memory errors/crashes/freezes: maybe because of the memory. What about with the new version?
- Memory fragmentation, after a longer playing period (*maybe* this one is solved now, because of the less memory needed)
- Accept regcode calculated without "-"

Thank you for your help!!!

Hi Stewe

Thanks for the latest version of Legacy. I really love RPG's, but until now I wasn't able to play the game much. After a clean boot with nothing else running I only had 3.05M free. While this was enough to get the game started an explore the forest and kill off some spiders, every time I left the forest, the game loaded a new screen and got stuck in 'out of memory' errors.

I will install the game today and play some with it over the weekend and get back with my findings on monday. If I still find memory problems, I'll give a detailed description of my machine, running processes and open files.

Thanks for making this great game available for the Communicator.

For the memory: you can use the free utility, called Switcher (http://www.redshift.hu/stewe/Switcher.sis) to clean up the execution memory, anytime. Probably you have more background tasks (and they're starting automatically).

As far as I know the Communicator can handle up to 160MB. For some types of digital camera's this kind of MMC was included but you cannot buy them separately. I also heard of people succesfully formatting a 256MB card with 160MB only (wasting almost 100MB) and having it work on the communicator. There's an entire thread about this topic in the Cyberlie forum: http://www.cyberlie.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=327&highlight=160

I already tried to reduce a lot of memory by not running anything else and removing all but one of the auto startup programs. The only resident program now running is AppMan. I even set a hotkey for starting Legacy so I wouldn't have to open the Extra's menu.

AppMan also has a list for running processes and open files and I just found out that my index file for messages is always open as well (even without the Message application running). This file is big, so I think I'll need to clean up my messages. I'll let you know what impact this has on free memory.

Hey, you built in some memory check. Cannot start the app if memory is below 2.9 MB. Good idea, but now it's impossible to test whether it will work on 2.8 or 2.7 MB. Is there a way to bypass the check?

redshift
22-04-2004, 01:42 AM
Hello!

Just answered for your mail...
2.9 - I could remove the check, but I shouldn't... I'm sure the game can start and run with 2.9, 2.8, 2.7. But later, based on my memory tests, the game can eat sometimes more memory than the initial amount. For example: if you're in a tavern, then additional 90KB is needed (tavern inner picture). If you're in a shop, then I have to load the item pictures, but clear them when you exit. And so on... several combinations, I tested the worst cases.
Another thing: Every map needs different amount of memory, based on the used map objects... the 1st city is a huge one, for example (good testing!). The forests usually need less (no walls, less number of object types, ...).

I noticed that in the new version (the latest) the text seems to be corrupt/really pixelated, it doesnt seem to be as sharp as in the previous versions. On the main screen text is fine, but in attributes/taverns the text is bad and hard to read...
UPDATE
After a reboot it seems to be fine

Also
In my party I have a cleric who can heal. When I select him and heal, I cannot then cancel the request. What I mean is one time I selected the cleric selected heal then realized that all my party members were at full health, so I didnt need to heal but I couldnt cancel it so I was forced to cast heal on a member even though they had full heath.

Not sure if this is intended, now when playing a game, and if I plug in the charger, I get no notification that it is charging, normally we get a picture saying charging on the pda side, it does charge the phone just no notification comes up.
UPDATE.
Actually you do get a notification, just it isnt instant.

I'm glad you mentioned it because this is something that has really been annoying me for some time. I didn't say anything because I thought we were going to get a quicksave key combination in the adventure screen. I would suggest replacing the shortcut in 'Start New Game' from 'S' to 'N' (new). You can still get to save by pressing 's' twice, as it is, but how often do you start a new game? Save should have priority. It takes 6 button presses to save the game right now and anything that can be done to cut back that number is a plus.

V.5

This memory reduction really made a huge difference. Unlike before, I can now use my communicator and still be able to play this game in the background.

Love the new loading/saving speed!

Haven’t done any exhaustive tests but seems to work like a charm!

Sound works a lot better now. I can hear a little crackling but that’s minor. Volume controls in Action Screen finally work.

I can finally exit without crashing.

Now that sounds are separate is there any chance of getting some of the lost sounds back in a future release?

Liked the snoring sound in the inn, added a nice touch. Fade seems to work better and faster.

Memory fragmentation: I haven’t gotten any errors on memory yet.

Notifications: (other than already reported)
1) I was able to get an alarm notification without crash, I couldn’t see the ‘turn off alarm’ label that usually sits next to the bottom function button though, but it worked fine as far as I could tell. Button responded even if the text was hidden.

Silly Nitpicking: (non essential)

Here’s a new one: I got my knight to ‘L’earn a spell from a book that said he could not learn. I got the message: "the firewall spell has been copied to the spellbook of lord bregennan". Of course it didn’t show up in the book since that category was not permitted for him but the book was wasted anyway.

Why does every item we highlight have "Pack:" in front of it, even if we are wearing it.

Highlander armor: I have the highlander Sierenna in my party, shouldn’t she be able to use heavy armor as well? She’s the strongest character in the party but I still get the msg "it would be a bit heavy for Sierenna".

I can’t tell what effect using non-recommended items has on characters.

Take care, Louis

- charger: sometimes the game does cpu-extensive operations... preparing sound, preparing game picture, loading pictures, and so on. The charger/other messages are simple messages, in the message queue of the operating system... and it can be handled asap.
- game help: personally I don't know the answers, really... Sylon designed these maps. Please check the hints/tips page, or forums on www.cliesource.com. I can't reach Sylon now... but he usually checks cliesource forums.

SirKline:
- "N" as Start New Game: ok, will be in the next version

Lipp:
- final maps... khhmm they're mine! from my devious mind. Hard tricks/secrets, probably you'll need to use the hints/tips page often. These maps contain some (smaller) issues, but that's because of the complexity. A complex system always contains mistakes. Although many players finished the game already!

SpecialBoy:
- sound: you're right... I thought ctrl/up-down would have problems. Maybe I could modify the shortcuts, or remove the ctrl/up-down from the game screen (and support only ctrl-s to mute).

Lipp:
- help text: Thank you! Please don't forget, the text mustn't be longer than the original. The current text already has a length issue.
- little crackling sound: as I have said, the sound hardware goes to sleep after ~3 seconds inactivity. If I wake it up with a normal sound, then sometimes the beginning of that sound is skipped. So... I included a dummy sound resource, 0.2 second silence, which turns on the sound hardware... this one generates the crackling. I'm thinking about it.
- lost sounds: the game would need 200 KB more memory... so the memory improvements wouldn't mean anything. The sounds must be loaded... if I load them run-time, then they would be *very* slow (seconds delay - sometimes)
- Learn spell: it's a bug! With the L key, I called the direct "learn spell" routine, instead of the checking one. Thanks! (Next version)
- Pack: yeah! I can change it to "Wearing:" or "Wielding" when it's needed. Next version.
- it would be heavy: a small mistake. The right string in this situation: "she couldn't use it effectively", since Highlanders aren't trained to wear heavy armors, by design.

Laura:
Good luck in the game! I hope you can't blame the crashes!!! Would be better: it's stable, just I didn't have too much time for the game...

Thank you for your help!

Stewe

Im not sure of this has been asked before but is it possible to highlight or make items on the floor blinking or a duifferent colour so we can see them easier, because sometimes it can be hard to see them and you can miss them. I missed the letter for a quest in town 2 and searched for about half an hour untill I realised where it was droped, I couldnt see it clearly.

Ok! I didn't forget it!
Will be done in the next version.
Because of drawing limitations, I'm not sure I can make the blinking... but I'll find a solution today.

Answer from Sylon!

1st: next time -> forum
2nd:
The five coins are:
city coin (beraquel, south-west corner)
barbar coin (giant cave, south-west corner)
amazon coin (beraquel forest, north-east corner)
tower coin (tower level 1, east hall)
ogre coin (ogre forest, north part)

Tower level 1: push the secret buttons in the ice and fire guardian rooms
(these buttons remove the non-blinking hole in the other room).

It won't be easy, I don't know exactly what should I find.

Stewe

I need help with finding the last two coins, the one from the tower and the one from the forest. I have the city coin, the barbar coin and ogre coin.

And

I am in the tower lvl1, I have killed the two mages/sorceres inside the two rooms that you reach via the teleporters, I have the two green small keys, but I cant get to the door which is next to the entrance when you enter the tower right at the start.

redshift
23-04-2004, 02:06 PM
Tower: do you mean the blinking/not blinking holes problem? If yes, then check the walls, one of them has a different color (secret button!).
The coin may be beyond the door ?!

Amazon coin: north-east corner of the forest, at the ground.

Bug Report 8
v.5

Funny, I didn’t get any errors the first day but..
The following crashes have occured:

1) Hanged on exit (blank screen with sidebar): when I pressed a key:
Crash: TaskMan; E32User-Cbase; 21 (I had over 3300k free.)

2) Sound Crash; Cdmada controller; 6 - (I had 3388k free)

3) Out of memory msg: just by after walking around after a long time.

--
Suggestions: (v.low priority) you may want to consider making a flag for unique items. I’m guessing you don’t always want players to be able to get Holy Hand Grenade Launchers every 7 days. Unique items can dissapear with a warning when you pick them up, already having one in hands.

--

heal spell: I partially agree... a) doesn't mean too much sp b) wouldn't be logical to support "cancel" for the heal spell only. c) we got more emails because of this problem from players (other platforms, palm/ppc). What do you think?

I guess that once you invoke divine or arcane powers you can’t just say, oops* on second thought.. . I say it’s ok to botch spells so you don’t throw fireballs around the room, but you already have expended the spell points when you cast it.

cheers, Louis

Hello!

Answers...

- SpecialBoy: Now I'm not sure I can make all the improvements... because: I developed changing the active character when the spellbook is opened. That wasn't a wise decision :( That was many hours work, the spelling architecture is complex, and the result was instability. I shouldn't modify the inner structure, that would mean long testing period. The planned release is next Friday! But I can store the requirements (the skipped ones), and develop them later, for 1.06.

- Lipp:
- gf: we have to learn from our mistakes. When you try an online rpg, and she is watching it, there'll be a question: what's that?
You *have* to say: "nothing"! Short, categorical word
My gf always asks my laptop for a "short surfing", not longer than an hour. 3 hours later I have to ask: finished?
- Taskman: I really can't do anything with this... do you have the latest version? I *never* have a crash at exit.
- Sound crash: do you remember what was the last thing you did, and on which screen?
- Out of memory: strange. I'll run long tests on monday, tuesday. Maybe the memory fragmentation, again. What was the last screen? Simply walking, or entering inn, shop, inventory ?
- Unique items: the 7 days refresh is by design, and for help. If a player lose a quest item, then he/she needs to wait for 7 days (and get it again).
- canceling: the lack of this feature can be annoying sometimes, I'm sure. This is the part that I don't want to modify! Spellcasting is too complex in the game, I will have to rewrite a lot of code later. So: next version, 1.06.

Thank you for your help!

I haven't had memory crashes with the latest version so I'm happy :)

Have you tested installing with the PC Suite btw? I have tried a couple of times and the install progresses normally until the very end (95% done or something) but then it gives an error notice 'device has been disconnected' (although it has not) and stops. Happened both with the earlier versions and the latest. This is not a major problem - I don't know how many people even use the PC Suite for installing apps because the sis-files can be uploaded to the communicator and the installing works fine in there - just thought I'd share :)

redshift

Cool!
Although I think I have to deeply test the game with very long playing sessions.
Lipp, maybe your device has very small issues, let's see the Task Manager. Please check the latest version, *maybe* it's Task Manager's bad.

Installation: it happened for me, sometimes (rarely). Do you have the latest PC suite? For example now I use the PC Suite for 9210i, however we have a simple 9210 device. The 9210i PC Suite is more stable.
Maybe the installation sis file is a large one. I'm sure the Legacy.sis is correct, I can't make any mistakes :)
The "disconnected" problem can be because of the long copying period.

I have the PC Suite for the 9210i Communicator v.2.11 (just like you Stewe even though I only have a 9210 device). I'm sure you can't make mistakes ;) the disconnection issue is probably due to the large file because the copying period is really long. Not a problem really.

gf: we have to learn from our mistakes. When you try an online rpg, and she is watching it, there'll be a question: what's that?
You *have* to say: "nothing"! Short, categorical word

We have to learn how Laura did it! Whatever it was, it’s strong enough for a guy but meant for a woman :D (just kidding! anyone remember that comercial?)

Taskman: I really can't do anything with this... do you have the latest version? I *never* have a crash at exit.

If no one else is having this problem then by all means, leave it alone. I’m running the newest version of both taskmanager and legacy. Psiloc software seems to be particularly stinky to me. I tried installing their shareware version of Extended Messaging once and that caused me a lot of errors.

I don’t doubt that there might be something different about my device even though it is new, the portuguese rom perhaps? Well, I don’t know what it could be. I might have to re-format my device to find out unless anyone has any suggestions.

Most of the last defects I reported happened after several hours of continuous gameplay. Sometimes shutting the communicator and opening it later without quitting the game. That is how I usually play this game.
On the other hand, hanging up on exit is something that almost always happens. It won’t always crash though. Sometimes it just hangs until I press the desktop key (or others?) then it revives. If I press taskman hotkey it almost always does crash.

Sound crash: do you remember what was the last thing you did, and on which screen?

I think it was when I pressed ‘Play cards’ at the inn. But it only happened that one time since I downloaded the new version.

Out of memory: strange. I'll run long tests on monday, tuesday. Maybe the memory fragmentation, again. What was the last screen? Simply walking, or entering inn, shop, inventory ?

It was just walking around in the city. As I said, all of these happened after several hours of play. It only happened once as well.

- Unique items: the 7 days refresh is by design, and for help. If a player lose a quest item, then he/she needs to wait for 7 days (and get it again).

Since we are on the subject, here’s a thought.

You remember how we were talking about how it’s not important to make it hard to drop or sell quest items because you said they would reset after a week? Well, you might be unable to get certain items like the "Mystic Sting" daggers or certain keys since you have to talk to people who don’t reset again. I didn’t try dropping anything before I finished the quest though to see if I could get them again.

I had a normal 9210 Suite before, and it wasn't stable. The 9210i one is stable, I think. But, this "disconnected" thing happens sometimes. Not just when copying, but when "installing". A bit annoying, because you have to start the copy again.

Lipp, I try to answer without quote :o

- save/load, west grendel: ok, stored. I'll increase the display width of the game slots.
- gf: I'm lucky, she don't play with pda games nowadays...
- Taskman: maybe it doesn't like your localized opsystem... it's a real problem, because so many users have their communicators localized.
- sound crash: I'll check this tomorrow
- memory: too. the problem is: if I play with the game for several hours, and a crash happens, then I can't modify the code & run a quick test again... I can't give too much chance to myself to find this problem :bawling:
- Quest items: you can get most of the quest items again... Mystic Sting from Morah is special... this small world was created by me.
Hint (for downloaded maps):
- play with the world
- save the game, quit
- delete morah.pdb
- start Legacy, load game
- save game, quit
- install morah.pdb again
- you can enter it again
With this process, the data about Morah.pdb is cleared from your saved game!
So... Sylon designed the base world to have the quest items on the floor, or in monsters' packs. That's why you can get those items again.
Of course there are exceptions, but not so many (we didn't have several issues about it!)

Thank you for your help!
I'll be back tomorrow (almost exactly 24 hours later), with a new version.

Hi Stewe

I've been playing Legacy over the weekend (even managed to get my wife interested, so now there are two beta-testers on the same machine - she uses save game slot 1 and 2, I use 3 and 4 :D). Boy, this game sure is addictive. I almost spent every free minute playing it :top:

We found some memory problems as well, particularly if you play the game in the inn (at the end of the game after playing it a couple of times I get out of memory errors and eventually Legacy crashes).

I also noticed the double S shortcut in the main menu. There's also a double R shortcut in the same menu (Restore Game and Register(ed)).

There's a cheat to get more money by playing the game in the inn a lot. If you win, you save the game, if you lose, you restore the previous one. It takes some time, but will get you a lot of money to buy good weapons, armory, potions etc. The strange thing (bug?) is that playing the game does not advance the time in the game at all. You can play the game for hours, build up a couple thousand gold coins and the game time will still be the same). Maybe it's a good idea to build in that playing the card game will take 15 minutes or so. This way it's not that attractive to play it too much.

One feature I'd like to see is the ability to choose your initial character (male/female, adventurer/mage/knight etc) when you start a new game.

No more bugs found, it's very stable, apart from the occasional memory error, but when you save your game a lot, that no big deal.

Thanks for this great game.

Well, it's an important info! Now it seems something is buggy around the card game. I'll check it deeply tomorrow.

I also noticed the double S shortcut in the main menu. There's also a double R shortcut in the same menu (Restore Game and Register(ed)).

Hmm... (btw you mean Resume Game, doesn't matter)
I can change the "Resume Game" to "Continue Game". The first char should be the hotkey... I have checked when the hotkey isn't the first characters, it was annoying.

You're right, but it's by design. If you like to play with the card game - do it. Of course you can have much money from that... the same happens when you clear a map, sleep for 7 days, and clear that map again. These are cheats (more in the game). I don't think we should deny them - some people like finding and using these cheats, and the goal is when players like the game :)
Time - I can see one technical issue: the day/night change. The card game can't load the correct day/night pictures/filters (if you sleep, sometimes you can see the loading area). Maybe I can increase the time when you exit the card game.

One feature I'd like to see is the ability to choose your initial character (male/female, adventurer/mage/knight etc) when you start a new game.

Of course we received this several times...
It's scheduled to 1.06, as well as (just ideas, plans): uploading a picture of yours, roll attribute values, and so on.
This would be a "serious" modification now, in 1.05

Do you have the crash other than during the card game?
Lipp had a crash when he was walking in he city... that's sad, it can be *anything*. A small memory error (when I delete something that was deleted already, and so on), a chunk error (when I need continuous 50KB memory, you have much more overall free memory, just in small pieces) -> fragmentation.
It's the hardest thing to solve.

Thanks for this great game.

Nope, only when exiting the game play. Sometimes I can see bits and pieces of the inn showing up and then it's 'out of memory'.

BTW Don't change anything to the time when people are playing the game. Some users of this particular cheat will kill me for suggesting this. I'm already sorry I mentioned it.

Two more small cosmetic things:
- The entire screen flashes white after drawing the redshift logo. After the white flash the redshift logo is in red. Is this white flashing intentional?
- The 'starting lecacy' white screen at the beginning: If something changes on the screen below that it will show on top of that screen (for example, mobile phone reception or time change)

It happened to me again just now. After about 3 hours of gameplay or so, In the swamp, fighting a zombie (for the 95th time), I opened my inventory and Crash:

Hi Stewe and other legacy folks.

So with the latest version, from the beginning to N'Gora I haven't found anything to report or complain about, the game is

GREAT, thanks :-)

The sole real comment I have so far is rather about the fight principles in the game: it is too easy and not fair (for

enemies;) to be able to drink mana/healing potions as well as changing weapons/items/armors during a fight without loosing the

action turn of the character. I mean, considering that casting a healing spell takes one turn, it should also take one turn to

drink something or change a weapon. This would make fights a bit more interesting with more strategy into them.

One minor other good addition to my opinion would be to be able to wait for an enemy to come in front of you, instead of most

of the time to have to go forward to meet it and thus giving it the first fight turn. Something like having a "End of turn"

option before the fight starts when you have an enemy in your line of vision.

Many thanks for this game anyway,
Cooli.

Hello!

Answers, before the new version! (lot of changes)

TheBruce:
- Good news: I found a small memory issue in the card game, and I take apart the large picture in the tavern. The new version *must* be more stable.
- Time in card game: would be harder than the worth, I have checked the code.
- Redshift logo, white flash: by design. Yea, more people asked it in the last few months, on all platforms!
- Starting Legacy: fixed in the new version

Lipp:
- CMdaController crash: it's a good news!!! MDA means multimedia. Tomorrow I will re-check the whole sound system. The harder thing: normal crash, without "CMda..." title.
- Fireplace, left side, overlap: it's in my list now.

Cooli:
Hello, Olivier! :)
I thought I'm crazy, because I remember these words :) Yes, and email from you.
- easy: that's because of many, non-professional rpg players. We felt we have to do this. The Expansion Pack is *much* harder! We plan the easy/advanced methods later, in a new game version. In the advanced mode, there can many limitations (drinking, items, less hp, sp, tough monsters, ...).
- monsters: I usually cast a spell, and then I press "end of turn".

Imran:
It's interesting, but I like this! Not because it happens, but the same happened earlier in the Palm and ppc versions. That means the goal: 99% same source code, shared features/errors. Easier to solve. Tomorrow: I'll solve it, I promise.

Lipp:
- "end of turn" when you can see a monster: architecture problems... when a turn starts, the whole game enters a new execution mode. I can't end the turn before it actually starts. I'll think about it tomorrow.

Imran:
wow!!! Is it a secret Communicator feature, or a 3rd party tool shortcut?

Thank you for your help!

Sweet! Thanks again Imran!

The harder thing: normal crash, without "CMda..." title.

I know it's hard. I write down the error msgs when I get them though. Btw. I'm guessing you solved this next problem in V.6 but I'm reporting it anyway since I got it.: I tried running on 3015k just for kicks to see how it would respond. worked well for about 15 minutes, (entered store, teleported, etc.) when I pressed enter on save screen: lockup then crash, kern-exec;3. Memory right?

Other news:
Here's a neat trick I noticed that seems to work all the time (prove me wrong, anyone). When facing a monster, before the first person attacks, you can turn to the side and cast bless spells (or etc.) without it being considered a combat round. I thought the monsters might get a free hit or something if I turned away but I don't think there is a penalty for this.

- memory... maybe I should set the minimal to 3.1 AND I have to check the save routine. As I remember, it needs a bit larger continuous memory space. This is the pain with memory: 3.0 is enough, but it's border. Maybe you have enough, but in small pieces.
- trick: yea, you're right. I'm not sure I can fix this now... would be really serious modification. I tried to solve it in the other platform versions: without luck. It's the most inner structure of the game.

TheBruce:
- maybe you didn't receive pms because of your message after the 1st one :)

I have to thank you for your help!
Of course, I offer you a free regcode for the Expansion Pack, too! If you're interested

NEW VERSION

Could you please check it ?
http://www.redshift.hu/stewe/LegacyComm6.zip

surprise:

- open the inventory, and take off the clothes
shouldn't be in the released version, because of Janet Jackson's issue :)

changes:

- fixed card game bug (memory issue)

- tavern picture: more, smaller pictures instead of 1 large one

- change member when the spellbook is opened (hhhhaard)

- starting Legacy fix (now it has a nice, but who-knows-why feature: the Legacy name and logo can be seen for a while, although the other parts of the screen are cleared with white. After this, the well-known picture appears: white background, "Starting Legacy" message. Based on my tests, the screen remains clear and white during time change/charger/and so on)

- "Start New Game" -> "New Game" (N is the shortcut)

- "Resume Game" -> "Continue Game" (C is the shortcut)

- Learn spell bug (a character was able to learn denied spell by his/her profession)

- "Equipped:" and "Wielded:" instead of "Pack:" when the character currently uses that item

- Highlander - invalid message (too heavy) - the good one: can't use it effectively

- Regcode accepted without "-" in the imei (probably you can't check this)

- Save screen: "West Grendelmoorw" is too long: now the slot area is larger

- I have removed the ctrl-up/down from the game screen... the ctrl-s still works (should work).

Thank you for your help!

Hi Stewe

Thanks!!! I'm going to check it out immediately.

Best regards

P.S. The regcode for the expansion pack would be highly appreciated (I'm sure I will get to it eventually, but I first need to finish the first part - this game really keeps me off the street)

First result:
Clean boot - nothing running - not even telephone app
Switched sound on and off in the main screen, then entered the inn:
Crash - Kern exec 3
The game did start up fine the second time. Don't know what was wrong the first time. I'll see if I can reproduce it.

P.S. Although the installation zip file is 106, the version in the SIS file is 1.05. I can see that it's a new version though because of the changes you made in the menu.
P.P.S. I would really like to be able to change the sound level while in the game. Is it possible to put Ctrl-up/down back into the game screen?

BTW what if you take off all the clothes of a character? I don't think there's anything wrong with a decent bra. I have to check the old version to see what's the difference.

Anyway, so far I've been playing for about an hour and noticed no memory errors even when playing the game in the inn a lot. Looks like you've nailed that bug.

V.6

Hiya Stewe, good work on those hard fixes :) It’s great being able to change characters in both the spell book views!

free expansion pack regcode: wow! It gets sweeter! Thanks Redshift!

Inventory, take of clothes? Nothing is different from what I can tell, same undergarments. What was the neat surprise? Anyone?

..Janet Jackson… issue..? :?

(minor text change, low low priority): Only weapons are wielded, not shields. (It’s still correct, in a way, but not really used. It’s not important.)

(reminder) Since you widened the save slot for long names it might be worth limiting the map name size in the editor. In case you forgot.

Card game: Is there any way to discard cards without using their effect?

Stewe, I really want a fast save hotkey (ctrl-0, or whatever). Either that or having autosave save during regular intervals? Is there any chance for one in the near future?

Map regeneration: I have a question about this, for a map to regen, do you have to stay out of the map completely for 7 days? I ask because some places (city 2) are never regenerating for me.

Neat tricks: ;)

1) Equipping items that "he/she couldn’t use it effectively!" , it seems you don’t actually get any awkward penalties like dexterity loss due to clumsiness or wizards not being able to cast spells in heavy armor. Actually it seems your only penalties are:
Armor: AC benefit halved. (other bonuses like +4 INT stay)
(So, I can actually give my Highlander a shield and still only win, sweet!)

Weapons: Here you seem to loose a little off the max damage you can inflict.
(pretty reasonable, but still good. Still nice to give a pure mage warhammer)

I haven’t checked the rest.

2) Equip your guy with all the hp/endurance bonus items, his max will go up – heal him. Remove the items and you keep the extra hp's (until you get hurt). If you heal/sleep that number will be reduced to its current max though. It works with spell points too.

Hi!

Answers...

The Bruce:
- I can give you the exp pack regcode at this minute, but would be better to see if the exp pack blocks you correctly.
- sound on/off, entering inn: I'll check the sound again tomorrow, searching for special circumstances.
- the released game version will be 1.05, the "test subversion" is 6 now. I hope the 7 will be the last (will be uploaded tomorrow).
- ctrl up/down: yes, possible. I just thought it can be annoying: because of the communicator's not-so-accurate direction keys.
- characters: no underwear :) when there was the ppc testing period, I removed this feature, and asked a bit later: did I forget something? The immediately answer: "the boobs, man, the boobs!"
- memory errors: now I have even better version...! The main picture is built up from small pictures, this is a battle against fragmentation, too.

Lipp:
- do you still can see underwear?
- shields are equipped, probably. (?)
- map name limit: the limit exists... if you see the palm/ppc shots, there're wider area for the game slots. This is a communicator-specific problem! (was)
- ctrl-0: I can include this one... I'll check it tomorrow.
- I completely forgot to handle your email with the help corrections!!! Tomorrow...
- regen: if you stay away from a map, then after 7 days, it'll be regenerated. But: just monsters and items. Objects always keep their states. I mean an opened door remains opened.
- armor/weapons: by design... probably logical. A mage can wield a heavy sword, but the knight in the party could use it better.
- hp/sp tricks: maybe the game contains a lot of cheats/tricks :)

Thank you for your help!

The plan:
I think we can release the game on Friday... except serious errors. Of course we can release 1.05.1 a bit later, with fixes.
I really can't make the test period longer! You *can't* imagine the number of emails about the missing Communicator version! Many people are waiting for it since 15th April.
And I'm very interested, how huge can be Communicator market.

Hi Stewe

No boobs in my version. Everybody's still wearing undergarments :?

About the regcode for the expansion pack: I'll install it and let you know when it blocks me.

So far, only sometimes a memory error (only after playing for a very long time, crossing lots of maps like forest, lizard cave, city, spider lair, inn, forest 2, lizard cave 2, dungeon, and moving a lot back and forth between them) and only if I start the game with around 3MB left. Starting with 3.3MB (managed to get some more free memory after all) no problems whatsoever.

BTW I read somewhere that it's sometimes too easy to win because you're allowed to drink potions during fights and heal your characters. Maybe it's an idea to add an option for an easy or hard game when you start a game. In hard mode for example, if you drink a potion during a fight that's the end of your turn. This will also give the seasoned RPG player more incentive to buy this great game. I don't know how easy or difficult it is to build this in, but maybe it's something worth considering for 1.06.

Anyway, looking forward to the next version 1.05 (maybe now (only just for this once) without the bra's ;) )

Best regards

Hmm. How could I do it ? I have the boobs version on our device. Maybe I forgot to rcompile the resources?
You'll see the pictures in the next test version. Well, it seems Sylon can draw nice boobs.
http://www.redshift.hu/stewe/boobs.gif

- the memory always will be a problem, as I see. Maybe it's normal because of the game size...
- easy/hard: yes, it's absolutely dedicated to 1.06. The easy will be the current one.

Hi Stewe,

just finished the first tower level.

The game is running fine for me now. I haven't had any problems in the last few days. I think you are pretty save to release it.

:) Btw. is there a way to save ram-space with combining the sources from dragonfire and Legacy? If i'm not totally wrong you recycled graphics in the Intro

Very well done, Stewe

Thank you!
Good news :)

We just included an intro picture, to say it's a kind of "sequel", because of the similar fantasy world. The source is totally different...
Dragonfire's source is 200KB, Legacy's source is 2 MB, including the editor :)

Now I have a new version, but also have some todo items. I'll back 12 hours later...

Hi Stewe

Just downloaded the editor to give it a try, but I'm a little lost as how to use it. I'm able to change the scenery, and can drop some objects on the floor, but changing the type of block (or adding walls, persons, quests etc) I have no clue how to do that. Is there a place where I can find that information (or maybe even a rudimentary manual) to get me started?

Thanks in advance.

I hate to see what your inbox looks like with all the emails :D after all, this is the best looking and the most playable game ever for the commy, Why dont you guys update your website giving people who are looking for the commy version an update...

Tried the latest version, and so far rock solid, cant complain :-)

The no clothes bit of the game, I think you should make it a hidden secret kind of thing, I mean, we dont really want some minors/kids looking at it by mistake, and you guys (redshift) getting bad publicity. Just a thought...

Is there a commy specific expansion pack or can we download and install the ppc version?

Need some help in the fire empire, I am in the bit where you have swop items from each shelf and place them on the matching coloured shelves red for red and so on, I have placed the items but nothing seems to happen? Also I cant place the items exactly on the shelfs, the items just drop to the floor, is that ok?

Hello!

TheBruce: I can help you with the editor:
- I have (not finished) documentation. It may be useful: http://www.redshift.hu/stewe/LegacyEditor.doc (word2k format)
- I can let you enter the private/hidden Legacy Editor Beta forum, which is on www.pdarcade.com. I just need your username. Bad news: Pdarcade lost *all* forums a week ago... we lost more hundred messages about the editor
So the forum can be a bit empty now... but I re-invited the players wo started to use the Editor.

Imran:
- release date: I thought I update the that information... doesn't matter. They know :) the original release date, and send us emails "is it ready? no? why not ?"
- inventory pictures: of course!!! We would never release such version, except with a special code (R-rated cheat?). Currently, the Palm and Ppc version simply don't have this feature. I think I can upload the final version in an hour, with this kind of pictures, but that will be the last one (I'll remove them this night)
- I have made the Install sis of the Mission Pack, too. Will be uploaded in an hour, too.
- Fire empire: you have to put them on the shelves. You should use "space", instead of entering the inventory, and dropping items.

Thank you for your help!

Hello!

Exp Pack:
(it's not a test, but a final version, in its final place)
http://www.redshift.hu/redshift/LegacyExp9000.sis
Note: the Exp Pack must be installed on the same drive as Legacy!
You can use the direct pdb url:
http://www.redshift.hu/redshift/MissPack.pdb
In this case you have to copy it manually to the Legacy folder.

Important: I have to clearly describe the instructions... the most important one: if you have the Expansion Pack, then the game requires almost 100KB more execution memory!!! That's because the huge Expansion Pack, it really means 50+ hours gameplay.

Final game version before release:
http://www.redshift.hu/stewe/LegacyComm7.zip
Could you please check it ?

changes:
- fireplace left side - dialog displaying problem (2nd city)
- I have increased the minimal required memory to 3.1 - to be sure. Do you agree?
- Main screen, pic modified - small pieces (you can't see any differences)
- CTRL-Q: Quick save. It does NOT save your game to the last slot, but bring you to the save screen. I tried to support the CTRL- 0...9, but somehow I wasn't able to catch those keys. Not sure... maybe hardware limitations? Or CTRL+number means something for the operating system?
- I have modified the Help based on Lipp's documentation. Thanks!
- Also, I have modified some strings... Replace->Reorder, and so on.
- Page number in Help
- Huge sound bug! I just found a note in my todo list... one of you mentioned this earlier. Exact problem description: if you start the game with sound off, then you set it on, and you immediately load your game and do something which needs sound (for example entering an inn): *crash*. Fixed!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!

Hi Stewe

Thanks for the new version. I'll check it out immediately. Changing the memory requirement to 3.1 MB is a good idea. 3MB is just a little bit too less. Maybe you should also include some instructions in the release zip file how to free more memory on the communicator (most users I know usually install lots of software without really caring how much memory is still available).

About the editor: the help document is great (good info on scripting), but I need some help with the basics (for example, how do I change a block to become a road, add a monster, add walls etc). I haven't been able to do this. I've pressed every key on the keyboard, double clicked almost everywhere, right clicked everything, but I cannot get the block type to change. The only way for me now to create a map is to copy different block types from other maps but this is a real pain.

I will also create an account on the PDA forum and send you the details. Hopefully more editor testers will be posting in there soon again.

Hello!

You're right. I plan to publish information about Switcher.sis (free Symbian tool), avail.sis (to check it), and link to Task Manager.

Editor basic:
- you need to select a family on the right
- then select an item from that family
- and, select a map position, then press space. it'll be there
- exception: wall items. If you hold down SHIFT, then you can select individual walls on the map. Of course a wall item (for example a painting), can be put on a wall only.
- now you can use the "edit" button(s) on the bottom.

Editor users: hope so!!! There were *many*. Probably they feel the same: all of the info were lost :( As I said, more hundred messages. I hope they still have a mood to use the editor.
Now I have a new map (created by a Palm player), and I'll post it there. This one should be tested.
And I have an own map, Arena (not finished).

Hi Stewe

So simple. Thanks :-) I've created my own small world already, but now I have another problem. I have a teleport in my map that should connect to the teleport in the first city, but when I got there my map doesn't show up. What can I be doing wrong?

Please open the Morah world. You can see on the first map (NW corner), there is a teleport, with type="back to connection", and object name ="STARTGAME".
This is what you need in your map: circle teleport, back to connection, STARTGAME.
Without these things, the game simply skips it.

Cheat: I know :)
One of my plans: a Matrix world, many shelves, with supplies. Because: some people never finish the base world, because of the annoying final maps (they're mine :o ). That means they probably don't have proper equipment and enough level to safely start the Expansion Pack. This world could help them :)

Exactly my idea. I wanted to make some screenshots with knights and sorcerers etc in very fancy clothing, so I created this small world with lots of items on it. Needless to say that I will use an item from this world once in a while as well, but only if I'm really stuck (otherwise it would spoil the game).

Anyway, I've been playing around with release 7 for some time now and haven't noticed any memory errors anymore. Thanks for this great game.

Almost impossible :( The editor requires 10-20 MB execution memory. It loads all the items, all the maps at once. The executable code is very huge, ~2 MB. As you can see, it contains the full game.

Exactly my idea. I wanted to make some screenshots with knights and sorcerers etc in very fancy clothing, so I created this small world with lots of items on it. Well, so you can see now the new item types: Adamantium and Firelizard. These are used only in the Expansion Pack! So if you make shots for the base world, then wouldn't be lucky to give the characters Adamantium items. I know you like them :) Superb items.

Anyway, I've been playing around with release 7 for some time now and haven't noticed any memory errors anymore. Thanks for this great game.

Hi,
I’m a little out of it today so forgive me if I’m not making sense. Lots I want to say later.

v.7 – expansion pack installed already (copied .pdb)
sorry to bring the bad news.

Bug!: 3165k free - playing cards, Anderville, Kern-exec;3 ; then: cmda controller;6
crash.

Bug!: 32??k free – (clean boot) Stepped into Grendelmoore global teleporter: message"insufficient memory" system held the machine for a minute then released. Did not crash.

Both of these happened after a couple hours of play. I have repeated these actions several times (before and after), but the errors have not been repeated.

Volume bug(let): I noticed that there are times when the volume seems to reset to a certain level by itself. I’m not sure what triggers it though. I’ll keep an eye opened.

Oh, um. This might be nothing, but: When I went to install the alpha version I asked to look at the certificate. I got an error message: "not possible to find root certificate" Does that mean anything? (??)

Stewe: The quicksave is great! I’m so paranoid about loosing my game that I save every couple minutes. This feature keeps my stress down a lot :)

Regcode barrier: The expansion pack regcode barrier works fine in more than one place. Can you forward the code to me? Thanks again!

Questions for the forum:
I’m having some trouble in the frozen kingdom and have already checked out the hint pages and forums. I’m guessing it’s me, but I followed the instructions and still am not getting the result. Can you guys please take a look at my question on the forum? (You don’t need to create a login to reply.)
Question: "AA! Need help, switches frozen realm"

While I’m at it, have any of you been in the fire empire before the frozen empire? I never found the key for the fire empire. I’m guessing I have to do frozen first.

For me the game started to be complicated. Is not that i don't want to continue or do not have proper time but don't you think that if the game starts to be too complicated ppl will have a bad point of view about the game. Is just a suggestion to make the levels harder and harder by time or allow user to select difficulty level they want to play.

Hello!

Answers...

Lipp: yes, bad news. But:

- Anderville, card: if you play with the Expansion Pack, then the game needs 100 KB more execution memory than the normal one. You said 3.1 isn't enough for a more hours play. That means: 3.2 isn't enough for a long play in the Expansion Pack. I knew there are problems, but I really don't have currently other ideas :(
I'm thinking!
- Memory errors: memory fragmentation, I'm almost sure! There's one weapon against fragmentation: if you have much more memory than needed. It's ok for most of the games: they require less memory, probably you have much more, that's why they don't have such problems. Legacy plays on the border!
- Certificate: that's right. We didn't buy a certificate. And it doesn't mean anything (almost): trusted certificate agencies don't know what is "Redshift". That's all.
- Quicksave: cool :)
- Regcode: I send it you now
- Fire&Frozen: they aren't easy! More players should know the answer, and Sylon usually checks the forums on pdarcade. I ask him to reply for your questions.

Imran: Please send me your saved game, I can check it!
The hint: you have the items with "Fire" in their name. Try to put those items on the selves... one by one. But! When you put an item down, then exit the inventory screen!!! This can be the problem.
Maybe it's a bug, yes. Maybe the Communicator version doesn't know it should run a particular script.

TheSpecialBoy: really sorry :(
We tried to make it really hard...
Maybe the Expansion Pack will be good for you... less annoying secrets, but more side quests, and many battles. I can send you a party which is able to enter the Expansion Pack.

Thank you for your help!

Hello!

SirKline...
hard to say, but the Communicator market is smaller than I have thought. Ok, I shouldn't have an opinion, the game released a day before.
The game is on nokia softwaremarket now, and they selected it to be on the Communicator main page. That's cool, as I remember, they sold more in the past (from Mobile Civilization).
So... we have to accept that Palm is the largest, Ppc is the 2nd (or close around Palm). But we started making games on a Communicator, that's why I thought it's a kind of "prestige" :)

Imran:
thanks, I check it now!

So... the saved game: it works!!!

What I did: went to one of the shelves.
- space (opens the shelf inventory)
- drop one of the "Fire" items (I saw you dropped them on the floor)
- EXIT inventory. I got it, this shelf needed this item. A door opened.

So... you should do a brute force... try the 3 "Fire" items on all shelves. They'll open the doors.

Hi Stewe

Found two more bugs (maybe you can fix those in version 1.06)
1. If a yes/no dialog is present (for example: do you wish to enter the dungeon), you're still able to bring up every other screen (like C for casting spells, M for the map etc, main menu, inventory etc). For example, if you press M the map shows, but if you press 'N' for no it will display the No button right through the Map window. If you press C, the spell window appears, and although you can browse through your spells, pressing enter will not launch the spell, but select the default button in the yes/no dialog beneath it.
2. After exchanging two characters' positions (exchanging 3 and 4), I gave an object from 3 to 4, but the status displayed the wrong name (father Asmodeus received a Cure posion potion, but the potion was given to Ketiara - father Asodeus was the one giving the position and used to be in position 4).

Other than that, no errors. I've been playing with the game a lot over the weekend (hours without quitting the game) and didn't get any memory errors anymore.

As for the communicator market sales: the game is only out for a couple of days. Most people will play with it first and wait till the game blocks them before buying a registration code.

Best regards and thanks again for being such a great help

The face starts laughing and disappears

I'd like to congratulate Stewe and the Redshift team for making this game. I've been playing the latest ('striptease') version and haven't encountered any memory crashes as long as I stay above 3.1 MB. I'm still aimlessly wandering around the forests and the bartender in Decantres won't let me hire any more people because they all get killed straight away... but other than that, the game is great ;) I wish you good sales and continued succes in the business :icon14:

MAJOR BUG:

I have just finished the game, killed sohl :D , went through the teleporter, and started watching the ending bit.

I get to the second screen of the ending where the guy is saying tell me what powers you want, then the game crashes with the following error

Application: Legacy
Reason code: KERN-EXEC
Reason number: 3

If I press space at the end of the second screen the game carries on fine, if I press ENTER then the game crashes?

I have tried rebooting, nothing running in background, sound is of and then on, but if I press enter it crashes.

UPDATE:
It seems to happen if you press a key before the text has been fully written on the screen, then the game crashes.

UPDATE 2:
It seems to be happening all the time now.... It just crashes at the end of the seond screen....It doesnt matter if pause is on or of

Hello!

SORRY, somehow I haven't received notifications... maybe forgot to answer around the release for a message, and that's why I haven't received anything.

So, the answers:

Imran:
the exp pack: we would like to release it later, because of the marketing strategy. Another title for Legacy Comm can have another "news item" on sites.
Sorry to say, but we haven't got too many sales :( Don't know why... maybe most people use the Comm for giving calls. Or the price?
But: as I have said, we started the whole gaming business on Communicator. It's a must have :)

TheBruce:
thank you! I can quickly fix the problems, and update the versions. Because of the low number of sales :( I can send a new version to customers, without changing the version. Including the bug found by Imran (thanks!).

Imran: thanks! This text bug will be a quick update :)

Laura: thank you! Probably you could start a new game, or reach the next city. Hirelings normally don't go to lower or higher level taverns. So:
- first city - level 1 hirelings
- 2nd: level 5
- 3rd: level 10
- expansion pack city: level 15

Imran: I plan to make an updated version on this weekend.

Thank you for your help!

The bug that crashes the game right at the end, it may be corrupt pictures, I tried the game again today, and this time it didnt crash, I got to choose which power I wanted BUT the two pictures seemed to be corrupted, so it could be this that crashes the game.

Another thing, after I have choosen one of the two powers either commander or magic, what happens then?, the game just drops be back into sohls chamber and nothing happens? no new level no nothing? what is supposed to happen?

You're right! I found problems at the end.
However, I can't compile new version... sorry, it's because I'm working on the Symbian UIQ version, and the there are problems while compiling the 9200 version. I can do it in 2 days.

The truth is we planned to something *crazy* at the end. Later, we had to skip that thing. So now if you select the "weapon", then you get a cool weapon, otherwise a good magic staff. So... the text isn't 100% correct, these are gifts only.

cool, thanks for your response, the weapon that we get is it power of orasare damage 17-41. It suddenly appeared in my inventory, also, does only the primary fighter get a wepaon what about the second fighter?

After I get the weapon, can I start the xpansion pack?
Also
what does the redshift key do?

thanks for your response :)

redshift

Yes, we should display "You got a reward from Orasare" or something like this.
Now you can start the Exp Pack! I think your characters are around level 17. Am I right? In this case the Exp Pack won't be *so* hard for you, just simply hard.

Redshift key: it opens a door. Hint: a door in the first city. Another reward.

I didn't have time to make the corrected 92x0 version on the weekend... (faimly). Few days...

Hi Stewe

Hope the sales are increasing on this great game. You certainly deserve it. The review is almost finished. I'll complete it this week and send it to you for your comments.

I've finally arrived at the last level, but I'm also not able to finish the game. After the second screen where Mersant offers you the choice, it's crash with Kern-Exec 3. Had to kill the bad guy twice, because I forgot to save before I entered the teleport  . Anyway, I saved now before that and I've tried at least a dozen times, but every time crash. Hope you can find this one.

I could help you by resurrecting your characters... however, you don't need this. By entering the teleport after N'Gora, you will be in the 2nd city, where you can find 2 taverns. Hi Stewe

Really looking forward to the new version. Hope I can see the endgame now (is it also possible to create an end-game sequence like that in the editor?).

I'm also stuck in the expansion pack now. Can't descend into the pit of death and the teleport won't bring me anywhere (need to register - so that piece of protection works). The text in the registration screen could use some improvement. Now it reads:
"You can purchase registration code on..."
My suggestion
"You can purchase a registration code at (without the dots)"
Also, the three dots after "contact us at redshift@redshift.hu with your..." could be removed.

I did find another small error:
Sometimes my number 3 character (a battlemage) can't cast a spell (confused) but the focus remains on that character. That's just a little inconvenient, but ok. But after all three other characters have had their turn, I still have to press E to continue the battle. This doesn't happen all the time, so I think it's a hard thing to fix.
It happens to me most of the time when there's also an attacker behind me, but when I turn around, I can't hit that attacker anymore (everybody has had their turn), and I have to press E to have em hit me.

One question: what does it mean if in the status screen the numbers are displayed in blue?
For example my battlemage Ketiara, level 15, has Str: 9, Dex: 13, End: 23, Int: 40, also SP: 270/270, where the numbers after End and Int are in blue and the second 270 is blue as well). I'd like this add this tidbit of info in the review as well.

Hello!

I tried to compile the new version, however I have some problems. It's not so bad, because I can apply some modifications tomorrow, based on your comments!

I'll be back tomorrow, but the answers:
- editor, end-game: no :( Lack of pictures, lack of support in uploading new pictures. Even the Official Expansion Pack has only dialog-based end sequence.
- exp pack register: I have sent it to you via pm.
I will apply the changes tomorrow!
- spell, confuse: I wasn't able to solve this... architectural limits. When a message blocks the attack/cast, then I can't move the selection easily to the next character.
For example: what if the mage is the last one, you try to cast a spell, it fails because of the confusion: in this case I should automatically finish the turn! That's what I can't do :)
- Blue numbers: they're modified by a spell, or magic item. If your weapon has "+4 strength" modifier, then the strength value will be higher of course (by 4) and will be blue.

Thank you for your help!

Hi Stewe

Endgame now works perfectly. Got the choice of two weapons and saved the game. Didn't check out the registration screen yet, but I'll do that later and let you know.

But, unfortunately, new bug: in dialogs with NPC's the text is one line too long. It looks like you're displaying one line more than in the previous version. This last line is completely visible, but if there's a continue button, it displays over the last line of text, making the text unreadable. Maybe it's an idea to only use the last display line if it is also the last line of text and otherwise don't use the last line and display the rest of the text on the next page(s).

Well stewe, I have finished the expansion pack, it seems to be rock solid, no major bugs or glitches that I could find, apart from a couple of txt ones and the one TheBruce found.

I hope you have good sales with the expansion pack

Hello!

Congratulations!!!

Of course you can have/use ALL the additional worlds you can get. The world format is absolutely compatible with all versions/platforms.
The Expansion Pack delay is because of marketing: better to send news to sites, and better to announce new products.

I just plan to make sis install kits for Official Expansion Pack / Symbian (Communicator, UIQ).

So you can download the Legacy:Revenge (for example from Legacy Palm page of www.redshift.hu), but you need to manually copy it to Legacy folder.
Btw: I know about 5-6 free worlds for Legacy! Some of them are under beta-testing. Some of them weren't released for public at all (don't know why).

I have started playing the game again this time with different charactares, DAMN your game has high playability :D

Some suggestions.
Is it possible to MOVE spells that my battlemage/cleric and other magical characters have. What I mean is move the placement of them. For example my cleric is used mainly for healing, but when in battle when I select his spellbook heal is at the bottom of his list of spells so I have to scroll down and select heal and sometimes in my haste I end up selecting the wrong spell. Is it possible to move theplacement of spells in books, I hope you understand what I mean.

In my party I over time collect items which have an AV vaule of 0. For example a shirt. Why cant I sell this item. I have to end up dumping all the items I cant sell somewhere on a map. Sometime there are amulets/necklaces not just clothes that I cant sell. Is htis the way it is supposed to be?

Also why cant characters wear more than one ring. I mean they have 5 fingers lol but can only wear one ring ;-)

Also is there a way of stopping you from learning spells that you have already learnt. Sometimes you pick up a new spell and I have by mistake sometimes learnt it even thought I already know it.

Staffs. once they have no charge left, how can we recharge them? is it possible? why cant we sell staffs that have no charge left?

redshift

Many questions :)

I'm trying to give you answers...

- spells: currently you can't do it :( It's in my list now, for 1.06. I shouldn't make it now, since it would break the consistency with released versions (you know, they share the source code)
- items with value 0: sometimes they're useless. But you're right: there was an error in the game. When you got an item from an npc, then you couldn't sell it. This depends on the npc's script code: we tried to find them all, and fix them. Not sure we found them all!
- Ring: to keep the balance! Imagine a warrior with 10 rings, and +5 dexterity by each :)
- blocking spell learning: hmm that's interesting, I have to check it. It can be a small error (You shouldn't be able to learn in this case).
- recharge: we planned this... just had to skip this because of time. Now it's planned in 1.06.

Btw bad news... and that's why you can't have many games for Communicator:
since the release (let's say 1 month before), we sold only 20 pieces of Legacy Communicator version! That's terrible :(
For example with Legacy Palm version, we sold more than 30 pieces in a day (!) after the release, in the first month. Nowadays we still can sell ~ 20 in a day, but sometimes only a few.
Also bad news: I have detected high rate of piracy of the Communicator version. That's not so good for this market :(

Hello!

So... this registration system, which is used by most of the applications nowadays, is based on the imei and an algorithm. This algorithm must be in the game/application to check the registration code.
A cracker has two ways:
1, debug the app/game, and find all points, where a registration checking occurs (and remove them one by one)
2, debug the app/game, and find 1 (!) point, and extract the registration check algorithm. It's a bit hard.

The 1. cannot be done for Legacy... I have inserted the regkey check *several* (I mean many) times, and these points contain a bit different regkey check every time. It would be too much time.
Of course the 2. can be done. That's what they did: a regkey generator is available on warez for Legacy.

The truth is I have to make a *worse* (!!!) protection next time. You may ask: hey! why???
If there's only 1 point in the game, with registration check, then they could remove only that point! But in this case they have to crack every new version!
Now, when they have key generator, (they had to make one) a new version is (also) for free.

Hope the best for the new Comm :)

Redshift: It's cool to see a good oldschool RPG developed in Hungary ^^
I'm not sure if it's possible, but it would be cool to have a Symbian S60 and S90 version, since I think most ppl own those kind of phones rather than 92xx, which is mostly a manager-type phone, and those ppl don't really play RPG games. Tho most S60/90 phones have quite low amount of system memory (360kbyte in Ngage for example if I'm right). I'm not proficient in programming at all, but since the Gage runs games like Sims Bustin' Out and Tomb Raider with that little memory, so there might be a way around that

Legacy is available for both S80 and UIQ phones. There are no S90 phones on the market yet. The amount of free RAM (system memory) in S60 phones isn't really an issue anymore, in the newer models. But S60 phones aren't really as suited for these types of games as S80 (communicators) and UIQ phones. The N-Gage, btw, is one of the Symbian phones on the market today with the highest amount of RAM available to the user - about 11Mb after a reboot, only the Motorola's (A920/A925) have more I think.

redshift
31-05-2004, 10:48 PM
Well, I'm just preparing our first game, Dragonfire for S60 phones.
It's because porting Dragonfire is *very* easy for S60, becaue of the existing Palm lo-res version (160x160). When we'll see the S60 market is cool, then we can start porting Legacy. I'm almost sure it can be ported, too. It'll need 2-3 MB heap and 2-3 MB store.
Porting Legacy will be a real challenge!

Raven, you're right about the memory. I have collected all the specifications about S60 phones.

Btw do you know which device(s) should we buy? N'Gage isn't good, since too much memory and fast cpu. We would need a "bit" worse one :)
My bet: 3650. Of course we can buy more, when we need.

My bet: 3650. Of course we can buy more, when we need.

Well, if you want the "worst", then the 3650 would be it :) in terms of free RAM that is. Only about 2.4-2.8Mb is available after a reboot. But seeing as you made Legacy work on the communicator, i suppose you can make it run on a 3650 as well. :) just keep in mind that other S60 phones like the 6600 and the upcoming 7610 use an updated version of the Symbian OS (Symbian 7.0s) and UI (Series 60 v.2.0). The N-Gage and the 3650 use the same type of processor btw, and together with the 7650 and Siemens SX1 (and upcoming Sendo X?) they use the older version of the OS/UI. So you might need to get a 6600 as well for compatibility. Oh and the number of colours they are able to display varies also, 4096 vs. 65K.

redshift
01-06-2004, 12:36 AM
Yea, that's why I selected 3650 as the potential victim... 2.4-2.8 is enough for Legacy lo-res (the normal Legacy is optimized for at least 320x200, with larger bitmaps). Btw on Communicator, 3.1 MB isn't enough all the time :( But we can't expect more.

Thank You! This is the info I was searching for!
So we start with a 3650. Well, I'm not sure whether we would need a 6600, since I don't use opsystem specific things. But let's see it, we're open-minded to buy a 6600 :)

Raven, I would like to ask something...

I'm just preparing the S60 version of Dragonfire, but currently for PC (screen designs for 176x208, and so on).

I can download 2 SDKs from symbian.com: SDK 1.2 (Platform 1.0, os 6.1) and SDK 2.0 (Platform 2.0, os 7.0s).
If I use the SDK 1.2 version, will the result be compatible with for example N6600? This normally needs Platform 2.0.

This versioning can be the same as with UIQ: there is a 2.0 and a 2.1 SDK, but I used only the 2.0 one... and Legacy(UIQ) is compatible with p800/p900,a920xa925.

I have come across another crash in Revenge Stewe.

Again a screenshot is attached so you can see where the bug occurs.

If I cast cleanway on the two monsters the game crashes with the same error message as in the previous post.

Thank You! I check that area... maybe the clean way spell tries to move monsters to invalid places (like some objects, holes, ...)

Hi Stewe

Just found another bug. I deleted the mission pack and restarted Legacy. Now when I enter a teleport, the city of Anderville is still available. When I select it, I get a message "Teleport failed". One second after that Legacy crashes with a kern-exec 3.

About the error I had with the world created by someone in the editor forum: I deleted all the worlds I finished from the Legacy application folder. Now I can go to the first city. Guess it's a memory problem after all.

@Imran: Stewe told me that all the worlds that are installed take up some space even if you're not using them (for example the Mission Pack causes Legacy to need 100KB extra memory). If you, like me, have a lot of worlds installed on your communicator, this may also be the reason why Legacy Revenge crashes.

Best regards

Arjen

Ok guys.

I had legacy official expansion pack, morahs plan and revenge expansion pack installed.

I removed the official pack and morahs plan. The game still crashes at the same points. Problem is that I have 3.75mb of ram free at startup with only desk and tel running with Appman (taskmanager thingy)

I think that that should be enough ram free but anyway even with the expansion pack and morahs plan removed it still crashes.

I have re-installed legacy, (registered), installed revenge pack and it crashes again at the same point :-( I dont really want to format my commy and see if it works then. Any ideas....thing is I wouldnt be to bothered but the point it crashes at I think is related to a quest :-(

EDIT
Also now I dont have the official expansion pack installed anymore (just for testing) now why I try to teleport I can still select Andervil (from the list and I get the same error message as you Arjen and the game crashes.

You have a lot more memory available than I have (I usually have around 3.2 MB).

I was just thinking that since this "trick" solved my problem (and it looked very similar to yours - same error message), it might solve your too. Too bad it didn't.

I don't think reformatting your commy is a good idea: it looks like this is something in the world-file or the communicator version of Legacy.

Hello!

Arjen: you're right... Andervill is a registered "Global Teleport" target. I didn't think that Expansion Pack should be removed at all on any devices.
The memory on the Communicator is a pain, I have to find another idea to decrease the needed memory (just like the one during beta-tests).

Imran: do you mean it crashes when you try to enter that door? If you check it with Editor (like me), you'll find the script of the door is very simple... on our Communicator, the crash doesn't happen at that point. :( Currently I don't know, Sorry...

Stewe

Yes, the minute I try and go through the door it crashes.

Ok, today I set up a debug version for the device.
I'll be back ~12 hours later.

Stewe, i recorded a movie of where the game crashes, it is in nokia 3gp format, most players (quicktime) play the file.

See what you make of it

Also
I think thebruce mentioned this, but when you talk to a npc their conversation is overlapped with the continue button at the bottom so a bit hard to read, and :-( the corrupt txt bug thingy is still there. Althought today has been the first time in about a week that I saw it again.

I was able to reproduce the problem on our Communicator, just I don't know the "why". It simply doesn't happen on other devices.

overlap: another bug :) I'm on to solve these problems.

@Imran: just curious: what software are you using to capture a movie on your Communicator? Seems like a useful feature.

So it is a bug then stewe? just I was tearing my hair out thinking it was a problem with just my commy.

Arjen, what I used was my 6600. I played the game on the commy and used my 6600 to make a recording at the same time.

I own a 9500, please give me the link where I can download the testversion...

Well, I badly need a brave humanoid with a 9500 device :(
Since we don't have a 9500, I just hope that my code will work. The emulator doesn't mean anything, but of course the game works in the os7/series 80 emu.

Hello!

Thank You!
Well, the current version isn't compatible with 9500 - it was tested by Nokia.
I just have a task (for this week or for the next one) to make a 9500 version.
I'll be back!

Thank You for Your help, in advance!

Stewe

Hi Stewe. I sent you an email via my hotmail account. I tried testing the current version 1.05 on my 9500 and I got an error message System: Operarion is not supported then a Kern-Exec reason 3 error.
