View Full Version : Palmtop Magaine - The Great Change
Well, I got back to work and realised that Steve Clack et all over at Palmtop have finally went public with their amalgamation of the EPOC and PALM magazines to create "Palmtop User," which means I can finally talk about it!
What are peoples opinion of the new magaine? Do you want a dedicated magazine for your machine, or do ou want the overview of the whole market place?
Are Palmtop the people to deliver this, or have they been in a rut for too long?
I was here first and I claim the above post as my own.
And I have a flag to prove it.
Tomahawk 15-08-2002, 10:56 AM My subscription for Palmtop has just come up for renewal. If the magazine had continued in the old format, I would have renewed. My major interest is in er6 technology, specifically 92x0. In the new post-merger issue 1, the content related to 9210 disappointed me. In fact, some of the content promised in issue 37 for issue 38 related to the 9210 was ommitted - e.g. maximising memory availability.
I understand and sympathise with their reasoning and wish them well, but shan't be renewing my subscription.

*captures the flag and heads back to his own base sharpish*
Dazler 15-08-2002, 02:27 PM /me swings before Switchblade and frags his head off, Flag anyone? :]
SwitchBlade 15-08-2002, 02:40 PM /me gets the MuppetCannon and chases Dazler while firing Muppets left right and center.
N9210 15-08-2002, 03:18 PM /me Looks up from Vexed - "Children! - Behave!!!" - looks back to vexed and thinks when the hell are we gonna get these new levels!!!
Rafe looks in from very busy schedule and think.. Need to do something about all these off topic posts and blatant post increasers.
hmm... new AUP? ;)
On a more serious note although I do feel saddened by this move I think it was inevitable. I suspect the magasine will still be the best thing for a PDA perspective in the UK (PDA Essentials is very bad IMHO).
SwitchBlade 15-08-2002, 03:30 PM Off Topic but mine were not post count increasers, for that I'd start a thread in waffle and have many many posts each with one number in, going, 1, 2, 3, 4, etc. That's post count increasing lol.
The flag comment was too much to let pass I'm afraid.
(Ewan takes back his flag) No fair, I'm gonna get me Dad on you....
Oh and Patrick, I suspect that another pack will appear on Monday. Prepare the rubber room to thrown your 9210 around in frustration, it doesn't get any easier than this.
There, NOW I can storm off in the huff with a clear conscious.
Dazler 15-08-2002, 03:57 PM Was wondering are we talking normal muppets or those from Muppets Tonight ? ;)))
SwitchBlade 15-08-2002, 04:02 PM They were conventional Muppets (Jim Henson is turning in his grave R.I.P.)
Going completely off topic, I love (respect) the way they retired Rowlf (being Jim's favorite Muppet) when he died. On Rowlf's last apearnce (Treasure Island) he stays silent, and waves goodbye as the boat sets sail...
upponalle 15-08-2002, 05:33 PM Going back to the topic and hopefully not collecting unnecessary posts...
I just finished reading the "new" Palmtop Magazine and I know that I will not renew it in the future. Understanding the move they did, but I'm personally interested Psion, Symbian and 9210 issues and if the magazine continues the way it did with the new edition, then there is not so much in it for me and I will spent the money on something else (programmes for 9210 :D ) Sad for the effort of the editorial staff...
SwitchBlade 15-08-2002, 11:03 PM TBH I think one magazine trying to cover all aspects of the PDA world will end up lacking somewhere without efort and realistically to be fair to all platforms only 25% of the magazine would interest each person, hence it wouldn't be worth anyone buying. Realistically a ER6 magazine will be a slightly more padded version of this wesite supplied on paper. Most people are finding with various computer mags they can get what they want online elsewhere and for free, so why put your shelf under pressure.
As per Ewan's comments on Palm, if things go the way they look like going, Palm may have the best OS of the lot soon, just a shame that their hardware isn't up to the standards of the compettition. Hell if I could get my 9210 running BeOS I'll be well happy, sorry I didn't say BeOS there I said PalmOS6 *cough*.
Zuber 16-08-2002, 06:54 AM Ewan, (or anyone else).
In what way do you think that
"Palm (IMO) is a limited PDA platform "
The reason I'm asking, is that I have just taken my first look at the Sony Clie PEG-NR70V. See http://www.sony-europe.com/clieplaza/
One serious bit of kit. After reading about that 320 X 480 display, plus a thumb keyboard. I am starting to think this would be my second choice after the P800 if it does not do what I need (Might end up being first if I don't stop drooling soon). i.e. Get bluetooth, and go for the 2 device solution again.
Actually, I think I'll do a post asking people to remind me why it's a bad idea.

I agree that a dedicated Psion/Symbian magazine would be better (for me anyway as a Psion user).
But if the choice is no magazine or a combined one with a reasonable amount of Psion/Symbian material I would rather the latter.
So for me I am willing to carry on for now. If the Psion/Symbian material reduces further (and I must say some sections were fairly low in this first combined issue) then I will thing again.
One other comment I will add. It is probably just me in the sheltered Psion world, but seeing all the new PocketPC/Palm kit in this combined magazine surprised me how much there was going on.
At the moment we seem to be getting one new Symbian type device a year, while in the PocketPC and Palm worlds there appears to be several each month. I just hope with the 7650, P800 etc. things are just about to kick off for the Symbian world.
Now if Psion could through their hat back in and come out with a decent keyboard, bluetooth, colour PDA.... Dreaming again!
