Righty,

I take no responsibility for anyone's phone bill with this, but here we go.
Create a new gprs access point data connection simply with "3netaccess" as the address.

Then go to the browser, disconnect from the current connection and open the URL of your dreams... works a treat.

As ever I'm in 2.5g roaming on o2.

Try it lads and lasses!

James :)

*UPDATE* - Seems to work for proper pop3 accounts as well. :)

You cant set it - if you got 2 of the 3 bits of the coverage doughnut yellow, youve got 2.5g. I might mission it out later to dee if I can get it goin in 3g areas too ... dont see why not tho.

Anyone seen Rafe's new prototype webby for ickle screens? Aint givin away the url tho :p ...

Could be an o2/3 grps access point then ...
Did you defo disconnect from the original connection first cos I forgot to and got that message ...

Once I chose disconnect I couldn't get it to reconnect and so turned it off then on. When I went to the browser I then selected 3netaccess from the dropdown and got that message.

I will force a connection to O2 and try again.

I'm on a voice and picture coverage area now - is that the O2 connection?

Anyway, I tried with this coverage and got the same message again. Were there any other setting I should have put in the connection? I didn't put anything under advanced.

Can anyone tell me why 3G havent got GPRS up and running on the A920 ?

This is a major downfall of this phone and am reconsidering buying it now

hehe it managed to crash my phone.

i pressed connect and suddently the screen started to fade and it rebooted :(

damn

Is James the only person that can get this working ?

James, is it that you can connect to the O2 GPRS only when your out of the 3G coverage or will it work regardless as long as the settings you said are put in ??

I am going to get my A920 tommorrow so hopefully I can have some luck to.

What are the O2 GPRS charges ?

Looks like it so far ... through I think it may be more through fluke or brute force and ignorance! Even then granted its a bit hit and miss. I've had better luck using the different 3 gprs access point than the o2 one - and that let me use external (non-3) pop3 accounts.

As for the 3/2.5g debate, went to a 3g area today - found a single pub in York where there is (almost :) ) 3g coverage and couldnt get anything to go at all except the walled garden 3 site and 3 mail. Then when I got back to 2.5g I'd knackered that too. So ... am now not happy! Dont worry tho - I'll get some more screen grabs of settings and sites when I work it out again ... fingers crossed! :S

As for the charges ... your guess is as good as mine. Its scary tho ... in Aus its 1c per kb - considering their £35 is $38 a month that would make almost a tenner a meg! Ouch ...

I'm keen to hear from anyone who has used the A920 for web browsing using the A920 as a modem connection to a laptop and what sort of data transfer rates they have experienced —what other options has anyone found success with in this context?? — which PCMCIA cards work on OS X???

Excellent :)! Now all that's needed is an IM client ...

Any news yet on how much it costs to use O2s GPRS??

It does work for me but off and on.
Before I found this site/thred I got it working from one of the austrialian sites but before I did anything else I ispoke to someone @ three to find out if it would cost me £10 a second and he told me two things
1 it's not charged all as being tested/upgraded at the moment & 2 it will cut off and back on until it's fixed.

I got this working @ 5 different points today it lasted for about 45 mins at the longest before it errored & crashed

hope this helps

Thanks very much for your reply.

One thing though, I have followed the instructions and when I disconnect from the '3 Services' - how do I get it to then reconnect - so it gives you the option '"Would you like to connect using a)3 or b)3netaccess. It did it once but I cant remeber how I did it. So now when I disconnect and try to open a page it just comes up with a 'couldnt connect to server' error.
Does that make sense?
Thanks again
PS can you connect then to any site? Or just a few?

It only works when it feels like it - the rest of the time you get that error. today I only got it to connect twice - for short periods.
this is just a guess but I think that it could be that three only turn the browser on when they are testing it thats why it doesn't work most of the time... or maybe it would work if you used a correct username & password.

How do you reconnect then??????

Thanks GhostDog you just confirmed my thoughts thats my normal IP ...So the phone doesn't connect to the net on it's own, it just connects through the USB cable over the mini network to the PC (like if you share a internet connection with another PC using a crossover cable).
to answer your question Montie, in my case the you reconnect only when you've plugged it in to your computer. disconnect by touching browse, disconnect then reconnect by touching browse, open page, type an address, open then at account name select your new connection (i called mine internet) then touch connect.

Has anyone (especialy in the uk) ever used the net without a PC?
