View Full Version : Avatar & Sig
N9210 07-08-2002, 02:41 PM Is it just me being too greedy, or is it possible to have an Avatar AND signature piccie in the forum? Every time I give myself an Avatar I lose my sig picture... like this...
<--- AVATAR
LOOK NO PICCIE

Yes it is possible. I've fixed yours for you.

hmmm.... now I look like an idiot as the post above has a piccie where I put "LOOK NO PICCIE"
Oh well.... nothing new there then
Tomahawk 08-08-2002, 10:21 AM Patrick,
That's a neat avatar! Avatars are new to me - after some searching on the web, I discovered a whole new world. How do u get a sophisticated avatar? Is there somewhere that one can download these from (free of buy) or do u have to build it from scratch? Is there software u can use to do it?
Thanks, Tomahawk.
Dazler 08-08-2002, 10:55 AM If you search for pic's and icons for website development you'll get allot of animated gif's like the one n9210 is using.
For example:
http://www.animfactory.com/
You can right click on images and save them ... And if their small enough you can use them here.
Nosferatu 08-08-2002, 04:20 PM You can right click on images and save them ... And if their small enough you can use them here.
and also do remember that only one image can be displayed at a time for the avatar... its height and width cannot be bigger than 80 pixels and aiso the file size cannot be bigger than 6kB... ;)
N9210 09-08-2002, 08:21 AM That was the bummer - the original gif I had was 12K and looked very good, but trying to get it under 6K was a nightmare and the end result looks grainy and colourless
But it still works and it's nice seeing all the cogs at work in the Forum machinery....
I can increase the size of the allowed avatars, but I just left it on the default. Its meant to prevent people from going overboard. Also it keeps page load times down since every avatar needs to be loaded it can take up quite a bit.

I have found one I like at around 13MB and got stuck trying to reduce the file size. :( How did you halve the size of yours? Options seem to be:
1) reduce no of colours - worth 20%?, but lose quality
2) reduce no of frames - mine is 12, but I haven't yet figured out what s/w to use to take frames out.
3) Frame size is 100x80, so I should be able to crop and reduce file size.
Any comments/suggestions?

13MB??? Are you serious??? thats a Godzilla if u ask me...
For editing, i think you can use Ulead GIF Animator (version 5).
The most recent version of GIF Animator now allows you to work in TrueColor, giving you more enhancement tools and flexibility to work with when creating your animated masterpieces. Now, you can also work with objects within your frames allowing more editing options and creativity...
Tomahawk 09-08-2002, 02:01 PM You are correct - only 3 orders of magnitude out on the size !! I started with 13kB, not 13MB
As u can see, I finally got there :D - a combination of GIF Animator online, a trial version of Fireworks MX and some perseverance.
Nosferatu 10-08-2002, 05:32 AM Yup... cool grimreaper you got there... now mine doesnt look that cool anymore i guess...
Tomahawk 10-08-2002, 10:07 AM I'm pleased u like it! :D :D :D :D
Yours set the standard for everybody else to aim for! Tough act to follow and provided the motivation to have a go at something else. Animation was the only chance I could see to come up with something that might come close. Credit to n9210 - he did it 1st and showed the way.
happygeek 10-08-2002, 12:36 PM I got so scared by all the death, not to mention death that moves, that I took the decision to go back to basics and just have a happy geek avatar.
I am purple and proud, and a little scared, natch! ;)

Yes, this is a great movie. We just had it the other day on TV. Btw, my first car was a Peugeot (206 XS). I still miss it. I had to change to a family car when we got our baby... :(
Dazler 25-09-2002, 11:11 AM I just found a car todaaay :) Guess what .. it's a peugeat 206.
Love driving it :) A good car for a beginner like me ;) But still like motorcycles more :)

Drive it for awhile and you don't want to change to anything else! ;)
Dazler 25-09-2002, 09:26 PM It's 11 years old, and I am driving ... me <=> old car ... I'll give it a month :s

You should watch a bit the World Rally Championchip ;) (first two drivers overall are in a Peugeot 206). Don't worry, you will have it longer than a month... ;)
Dazler 25-09-2002, 11:26 PM Nice, now I jsut need a copilot who dares to sit next to me :)
upponalle 26-09-2002, 08:16 AM Wasn't there a woman on your side...? ;)

I'm pretty sure the Psion Series 5mx had "Co-driver" which interfaced with ROute Planner (TomTom) and a GPS and printed handy arrows showing you where to go at the next junction, plus a vocal "turn right in x metres." I think that's the only way you'll get someone to help you do your Colin MacRae impressions.

Colin is only allowed to drive Ford! Finns are driving Peugeot and winning... ;)
Dazler 26-09-2002, 11:48 AM Jep, but I want my girlfriend allive so I keep her away from me and the car ;))
Mmmz if only the gps and tom tom on 9210 would speak :)
