Hello everyone,

We have just launched a new application called SMSXtender (http://www.simeda.com/smsxtender.html)

SMSXtender is a small (5.5k) midlet that allows you to send SMS messages to destinations all over the world for just 0.07 EUR/message. It also allows you to "tweak" your SMS messages in ways that are impossible from a regular phone:

1. You can alter the phone number that the message appears to have come from. Want to play tricks on your friends? Send them messages that appear to have come from their own phone number (or from their girlfriends ;) )

http://www.simeda.com/downloads/screenshot-smsxtender11.jpg

http://www.simeda.com/downloads/screenshot-smsxtender12.jpg

2. You can even set an alphanumeric sender id (a name). It is limited to 12 characters, but that's enough to send a message from J. Lopez to a Jennifer Lopez fan :)

http://www.simeda.com/downloads/screenshot-smsxtender7.jpg

3. You can send Flash SMS messages that are instantly displayed on the receiver's phone. The receiver doesn't have to press any buttons to read your message, it just pops up on their screen.

The application costs EUR 9.95 and includes 10 initial credits. If you need more, you can purchase packs of 100 credits.

More details on our site (http://www.simeda.com/smsxtender.html) or on Handango (http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?productType=2&optionId=1 _10_2&platformId=10&siteId=1&productId=83923&secti onId=0&catalog=90).

Enjoy :)

If you want to check the coverage area for SMSXtender go to http://www.simeda.com/smsxtender-coverage.html. Please note that only the receiver of the message must be in the coverage area, the sender just needs a data connection (GPRS or CSD).

This is awesome!!!! I was surprised that my country is actually IN the coverage area :)

Once again, the app seems awesome but i have a problem with an app the has not trial.

If you experience any problems with the software, you can request a refund within 7 days. The amount refunded will not include the cost of any sending credits, including the 10 initial credits.

I guess that answers my query although i still would preffer if the app had a trial version.

Have you considered different ways charging?Maybe raise the price of the app and don't charge for credits,or make the app freeware and charge for credits only?

Has anyone tried it?

Ive checked on the list and my mobile network (t-mobile uk) is not listed under my country. Does this mean i can't use this app, or i can't send messages to people on this network?????

drazvan

It means that you can't send to people on that network. It doesn't matter what network you're on when you send.

My thoughts:

SMSXtender is cute little app packed in just 5KB,pretty good when you are a 7650 owner,we all know that storage is not its strong side. The design is pretty simple and intuitive,no need to read any kind of manuals.

When it starts up for the first time the standard Disclaimer pops up which I'm sure is read by everyone with great interest and ecstatic pleasure. After that you will be prompted for you username and password which can be acquired on www.simeda.com/smsxtender.html

Its time for some fun.You can enter ANY number or name in the Source number/name field.Imagine torturing your friends with short messages to them from their ex girlfriends or boyfriends or even notes in the form of flash messages(flash messages show up on the screen with no user intervention at all) from the almighty to your parental units saying that they should buy you a new Porsche because they have to redeem themselves for the wrong they have done to you.The possibilities are endless.

Now,for the downsides. There is no report facility, like with the normal SMS application so you don't have any way of knowing whether the message was received or not.You have to manually enter the number you are sending a message to,no link to the contacts application. You can only send a message containing around 30 characters. If you try to send a message which contains around 40 characters you will get a white box and the message won't be sent.If you try to send a message containing 50 characters or more,SMSXtender will crash. It seems that the crash is specific for the Nokia 7650 or maybe my firmware revision(v 04.46).SMSXtender on the Sony Erricson p800 or the Nokia 3650 does not suffer from the bug I mentioned.

Lets hope some of Nokia's developers is reading this and it will be sorted out ASAP.

And I'm happy to report the error in the 7650 has been fixed. We've actually found a workaround, so now you can send long messages without problems. GhostDog, please contact me at support@simeda.com to get the new version for testing.

Looks like I spoke too soon ... it seems that the size problem remains on the 7650 (at least with the firmware that GhostDog has). My 3650 (firmware 2.50) sends big messages without problems. I'll investigate.

GhostDog

Razvan,02.50 is a 3650 firmware revision and its in no way realted to the 7650.I'm not 100% sure about this but i even think that midp on the 3650 is updated and there are slight differences.

You should check with forum nokia about the problems SMSXtender is having with the 7650 or at least firmware revision v 04.46

Since many of you asked for a free trial version of SMSXtender, we came up with the following procedure:

1. You can download the application directly from http://www.simeda.com/downloads/SMSXtender.zip. We have just updated it (it's slightly larger, 12k, but it supports additional characters from various languages and it's more stable). The application however is useless without the credits, so read below.

2. Send an SMS from the phone you're going to use for testing to +40722537195. Put your email address in it and your required password (like this: email_address@provider.com,password).

3. When we receive the SMS, we will create an account for you. The account name will be your phone number, in international format, without the double 0 or + sign in front. The password will be the one you requested. We will notify you by email when your account is activated. Your account will have 1 credit that you can use to test the application. We will not issue more than 1 account per email or 1 account per phone number.

4. If you decide you like the application, you'll have to purchase it (at the current EUR 9.95 price). If you don't like it, you'll have to remove it from your phone after the test.

If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to email me at support@simeda.com.

One more thing: we will check to make sure the trial requests were not sent through our system ... just in case someone was thinking about that :) (I know I did :) ).

Hi everyone,

I'm sorry for the delays in answering your messages, we've just had really big problems with our ISP (they got hit really hard by the latest Sobig + MSBlast combination). Our internet connection was unavailable until a couple of minutes ago ...

Anyway, in case you need to load SMSXtender on your phone directly via WAP, please point your WAP browser to http://dynamic.simeda.com/send/SMSXtender.jad.

And yes, we're interested in making SMSXtender work with as many languages as we can. So if your language contains any non-latin characters, please try SMSXtender and let me know if it works. If it doesn't, try to find out the codes for the special characters in your language (or come up with a translation table).

Thanks people,
Razvan

You're not paying on top of the operator's SMS tariffs. You just pay for the GPRS traffic you generate, which is around 1KB for 4 messages. For instance, at a rate of 2 EUR/MB (that's what we get here in Romania), the price per message that you need to pay your operator would be 0.05 cents/message (you can send 4000 messages in 1 MB).

Hello everyone,

We are almost 90% done with the new version that will support additional networks. But we need your help. All those of you who would like to send to networks that are not in our coverage area, please email me at support@simeda.com. We need the following information: the name of the network (including the country) and all the known prefixes for that destination (e.g. Connex Romania, prefixes 40722, 40723, 40721 - meaning that all numbers starting with 40722, 40723 or 40721 belong to this network). If a certain prefix for the network you are trying to send to is not listed, the system will attempt to send the message at 1 credit/message and will obviously fail.

There is no change in the client software, you can keep your existing SMSXtender versions. There will be a release later next week that will probably include support for the Greek language. If your native language is not supported, please email me at support@simeda.com and we'll try to figure something out.

Hello everyone,

We have just released version 1.1.0 of SMSXtender. It adds one important feature: the ability to prioritize your messages. You can choose between 3 priorities: Normal, Urgent and Very Urgent.

Urgent messages are always delivered before Normal messages. Very Urgent messages are guaranteed to be delivered before Urgent and Normal messages.

Urgent messages will cost you an extra 0.5 credits/message. Very Urgent messages will cost 1 extra credit/message.

The extra cost allows us to select additional (faster but more expensive) gateways to your destination network. So if you notice that a particular destination is slow, you can try increasing the priority.

The download locations for the new version are the same: http://www.simeda.com/downloads/SMSXtender.zip or via WAP at http://dynamic.simeda.com/send/SMSXtender.jad .

We are also launching the "Extend to a friend" program (an official announcement will be on our site tomorrow). The program is very simple: if you tell a friend about SMSXtender and the friend purchases a copy, you get 5 free credits and your friend also gets 5 free credits on top of his initial subscription. Just ask him to mention your email or account name when subscribing to our service.

Cheers,
Razvan

I tried the demo but wasn't able to send any messages from my 7650. It waits a while and then always says something about a java exception error. I tried via a dial-up gprs on my phone and through bluetooth (mRouter) which I use for lots of other things. No joy.

We have just released version 1.1.0 of SMSXtender
....

So, does 1.1.0 also include support for the Greek language?

Currently I send sms with SMSXtender containing Greek chracters by first writing and converting the message on the PC with a little program I've made, then put the text in a txt file and send it to the phone (i.e. over BT). Then I paste the contents of the txt file in SMSXtender.

I must warn you of this: Sometimes the recepient receives the message with all the Greek characters (but just those) appearing as triangles. I've seen this sometimes happen with other sms gateways, too. I suppose some do not allow non-Latin character codes? As an example, smsdriver indicates that Greek characters are supported only by 2 of its Gateways.

I bought this great software yesterday!! And now I dont have any friends!
:D ;)
But drazvan, is it possible that SMSXtender could be symbian program (.sis). So then there would be larger message area where to write, like in 7650 normal SMS-program. And there would be differend folders like sent, draft, etc...

Then when you attempt to send a message, it will ask you which access point to use, choose gprs. I dont know why but if you have gprs selected in 'access point' settings, then you get the error. :D

You know, I was thinking. The java app sends the data to your web server to perform its task. Wouldn't it be possible for you guys to write a web page that allows users to sign in and send these messages from the website?

Obviously the java app is cool for when you're on the move, but mostly we're just sitting at home or at work when we want to do these spoofed messages. Wouldn't it be easier to do it from a website rather than a phone?

'NONE' is the default setting when you first install the app, once its changed you cant put it back to 'NONE'. Try removing the app and the re-installing it again, the access point sould then be 'NONE', just leave it like that.

I'm wondering now if its something to do with my account. I wonder if the simeda guys will let me have another test account. Sorry to bother you with this again, but it's already been 10 days since the last update of this thread...
Is the Greek version still under consideration? The temporary solution I mentioned here (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=127397#127397) has always been unsuccessful lately... the Greek characters now ALWAYS appear as non-displayable symbols. Maybe something has changed on the Server/Gateway side? You cannot do much with just latin characters in Greece while everybody can read & write SMS in Greek on their phone! :(

drazvan
10-09-2003, 09:22 PM

It's OK Razvan, I can understand that you are extremely busy! I just wanted to know if this is still included in your near future plans. Moreover, I was very worried to see that using pre-translated characters has stopped working as they were converted to a single non-displayable character before delivering the sms! I was afraid your SMS Gateway now filters "unknown" characters, in which case we would not be able to send non-latin characters!
I suppose you may have to check this when you include support for Greek characters, since it only happened occasionally from the beginning, but now happens all the time!

Hello everyone,

SMSXtender v1.5.2 is now available (http://www.simeda.com/downloads/SMSXtender.zip).

New features:

- support for language translation tables. The only language supported for now is Greek (thanks Petran!)

Note: You can send messages containing Greek characters to GSM operators in Greece ONLY! Do not activate the Greek translation table for destinations outside Greece, your messages will fail!

- menu option for checking the remaining credits (View credits)
- menu option for checking the cost of a particular destination (Analyze destination)
- the ability to choose between HTTP GET and HTTP POST when sending messages (some networks only allow one of them to get through).

Best regards,
Razvan

You are welcome Razvan! Glad I could help! :)
Greek works great, you can send normal SMS (160 characters long as opposed to 70 characters used in unicode SMS).

I've had so much fun with SMSXtender already! But I always try not to offend someone, so I choose people with a sense of humour. Let me tell you the latest prank which took place just this morning at the office:
A colleague has recently bought a second hand mobile phone. This morning he could not use it as a lock icon had appeared on the screen and it did not respond to key presses. Although he managed to unlock it a little later, my evil mind did not waste the idea this incident gave me! A little later I sent him a Greek SMS from the phone manufacturer (name of course, not number) saying something like: "Mr X..., the IMEI of the phone you are using has been reported lost. You are required to deliver the phone to the nearest police station as soon as possible". Seconds later he called me to his office as he wanted to ask me something! (I am well known in the office for having mobile telephones as a hobby). Before going there, I sent him another SMS with the local police station name as the sender, saying something like: "Phone deliveries to the police station are only allowed till 2 p.m. on working days". It was almost noon already. Then I went to him! He was very worried, showed me the messages and asked me for advice! He believed the phone he had bought was stolen! I played ignorant, asked him if he would deliver it. He was wondering if they could sue him for this. After discussing it for a few minutes (I could barely hold my laughter) I told him I would ask a police officer friend of mine and get back to him. I left and went to another colleague, whom I told the whole story! As we were laughing together and I was about to disclose the prank, the "victim" entered laughing too, as he had realized this was a joke! He had just called a friend of his working for an operator, who told him it could only be a joke! I think we upset the whole floor with our laughter! He had been ready to delete everything on his phone so as to deliver it to the police! Thank God he did not, I would now be in touble! :P

Maybe we should have a different thread for sharing pranks with SMSXtender? I have another really hilarious one, but it's way too long to type now, it went on for about 1,5 hours!

Rotten, these are normal SMSs. I do not know of any mobile phone produced in the last 5-6 years that cannot accept common SMSs! As for the target network, check SMSXtender's coverage (http://www.simeda.com/smsxtender-coverage.html) page!

SMSXtender version 2.0.1 is now available. The only major change from version 1.5.2 is the new SMS editing screen. It's a separate screen now, displaying your entire message with a character counter (counting down from 160 to 0).

The new version can be downloaded from http://www.simeda.com/downloads/SMSXtender-2.0.1.zip

Have just installed app, and I am getting a java exception, similar to a previous poster:

java.io.exception
status: = -18

slightly different number at the end. Is this because my account isn't activated yet, or is it a problem with the application. I have downloaded the latest version and checked all advice earlier in this thread. I have purchased the software, but have not yet recieved my confirmation e-mail.
Thanks

I have the same error. Spoke to Razvan on thursday....i believe it happens because your GPRS account isnt set up to handle HTTP connections. Razvans advice was to:

a) try switching HTTP method to 'POST' from 'GET' in the Settings menu

b) make sure your GPRS connection is pointing to 0.0.0.0 on the gateway

I changed both of these with no luck but think now it may have something to do with my firmware version (v3.16) which is not able to handle HTTP properly...upgrading my firmware this week to check

Shame, don't really want the hassle of firmware upgrade - I have no other reason to upgrade, everything else works fine! Any other ideas to get round this problem anyone?

Hello everyone,

We are about to launch a new Christmas application. I can't tell you what it does yet, but I need your help :). I need to know the name of "Santa Claus" in your country and in your language. So far I know it's "Santa Claus" in English, "Pere Noel" in French, "Weihnachtsmann" in German. How do you call Santa in your language?

Thanks,
Razvan

Hello everyone,

We have just released version 3.0.0 of our SMSXtender (http://www.simeda.com/smsxtender.html) for Nokia Series 60 phones. It's no longer a Java application but a Symbian native application. It has the following new features:

- Direct access to the phonebook both for selecting the sender and the receiver

- Default country code field that is automatically added in front of the destination numbers

- Drop-down list of recently used destinations and recently used senders

- Remembers the text of the last message so that it can be reused

All current users with Nokia Series 60 phones are encouraged to upgrade to version 3.0.0 (the upgrade is free of charge). The new version can be downloaded at http://www.simeda.com/downloads/smsxtender-3.0.sis

Thank you,
Razvan

Good day, am Peter .s. ojo, am a student of Covenant University computer software and communication engineering. I learn about the protocols of your services and in different to other online activated assurance.
If I may get the clue of your services in understanding I may say am sorry, beside, before I left United kingdom, I really appreciate the usage of 1cellnet services because its serves in or area of my tours. Moreover, I got to know that I can be able to access to the service whereby I had another phone and line which I will like to make use of in my country.
And all what I read about your services is that: Phone to Phone calls using your cell phone and GPRS (no SMS).
Providing you are able to send SMS messages from your current cell phone, you should be able to take full advantage of the savings we offer. If possible I may be connected this some details about my phone setup:

For your santa translations collection:
Agios Vasilis ---> in Greek. (it means Saint Bill)

I got the same problem with another program. It's used to check the your emule downloads remotely from your phone. When I try to connect I get the "status -18" error.

Yesterday I tried to send a message with SMSXtender but the whole service and company seems to be down. On their website one can read that they are in some kind of a copyright dispute. Does anybody know when or if they ever are coming online again?

I consider my remaining credits with Simeda as lost. It's a shame because it is a good company. Fortunately I have found an alternative application very similar to SMSXtender. It is called SendSMS and can be found here:

http://www.mobilequery.com/sendsms.html

It is also a small java application that can send SMS messages over GPRS et cetera.
As of now it doesn't support Unicode (foreign character) unfortunately but the developer has promised me that Unicode will be included in the next version along with some other features.
Another good thing about the program is that:
1. It is fully functional shareware,
2. 2. You use a professional third party to send the messages.

They have been around since May 2000 according to a Whois search. In other words you are not dependent on the company making the application to send messages. After the recent experience with Simeda this is a very good thing.

the program looks like a total cheat of smsXtender. i think simeda should be back online soon. i did email them though and got no reply.. hmm thanks for clearing out whats going on... yeah it really is a shame.. i dont think ur credits will be lost though if they do come back.

leopold

That the program looks like a cheat of SMSXtender does not surprise me. It would be very difficult to make a simple SMS sending application without being a cheat of SMSXtender. There is yet another application with the same functionality called iSMS. (It is for SE smart phones but from what I have read on the net it is not too good.) This program would also come close to a cheat of SMSXtender simply because it is also very basic.

I agree that if Simeda is going back into business I would most likely keep my credits but I think the chances of that happening anytime soon are very small. I also noticed that Simeda were selling 1000 credit packages at a special price just before they closed down. In fact they discounted almost everything. Could they have been milking the market?

Leopold

zainman
25-02-2005, 06:38 AM
no that wasnt why they were doing it.. atleast i dont think so becasue i have been in contact with their CEO sometime back and he told me that the discounted prices were just to promote the application.. i didnt get suspicious.. the story will unfold sometime sooner or later..

leopold
26-02-2005, 06:41 PM
I didn’t get suspicious either when they announced their discounts but in retrospect I see it as a strange coincidence. Especially the 1000 credits package.

Well, at least we have SendSMS as an alternative. A real alternative it is when the Unicode has been implemented.
